The trope: Hero who thinks the heroine is only good enough to be his mistress. Heroine doesn't realize this.

The conflict: hero's sister lies and says the heroine was kissing an OM at her party. Hero kicks her out and calls her terrible names, even throwing their first time together in her face. (She was a virgin and they met when he crashed his car avoiding her in the road. They had sex in the barn where they sheltered)

The resolution:

Possible issues with this one: Hero slut shames and is verbally abusive to the heroine when he is upset. He's also a control freak and very incurious about the heroine as a person.

Heroine is Pollyanna with hormones. She can't resist the hero - ever. And she looks for good in everyone, making excuses as she goes. Um. No. There is optimism and there is something called discernment when you use your life experience to make wise choices and avoid toxic people after they have left you down. It's not cynicism - it's reality.

Both the H/h annoyed me, but I just kept reading - lapping up the LG crack.

SPOILERS
Andreas, 34, was a wealthy and successful financier from a rich and influential Greek family.
No woman had held his interest longer than three months. No woman had ever met his criteria for a life partner.

Hope had been her ailing mother's carer for more than a decade. Now at 28, and after her mother's passing, she found herself alone and jobless.
She was a cute, curvy, bubbly and naive, virgin.

Andreas and Hope met in a blizzard, literally and figuratively. Two years later, Hope had been living in a luxurious penthouse in London, owned by Andreas. They were lovers and he would visit whenever he was in London.
Hope was happy and content and in love with Andreas.

That particular afternoon, Hope met with her best friend Vanessa. Vanessa brought up the fact that Andreas had kept Hope's existence in his life a secret for the duration of their relationship.
Hope defended him saying that he hated the media.
Vanessa reminded her that he never introduced her to a single member of his family or any of his friends and never took her out except sometimes on picnics.
Her friend also told her to face reality :
She was a mistress to Andreas, not a girlfriend.

Hope had vehemently denied it, but afterwards, that conversation started to haunt her.
It was true that Andreas had never made a reference to the future as something they might share, and he never even taken her to his own house in London.

Hope spoke to him about her concerns and doubts and asked him if he was ashamed of her.
He said he'd preferred to keep her to himself.
In the end he'd decided to take her along to his married sister's high society party in order to appease her. Hope was happy and excited about that.

Andreas knew that eventually he would have to do his duty and marry to father an heir.
Hope would be hurt but she would have to adjust to keeping their relationship discreet.

At the party Hope was snubbed and insulted by Andrea's sister. She'd called Hope "Her brother's whore".
One of the quest was Ben, an acquaintance of Hope. At some point Andrea's sister told him that she'd catched Hope with Ben. The sister was trying to cover up her own infidelity.

Back at home, Andreas accused Hope of been unfaithful. His sister had seen her in a room, in Ben's arms, kissing. Hope sweard she did no such thing. His sister, she said, was lying. That infuriated Andreas further.
He told her to find alternative accommodation. They were over, after all, she was just his mistress and as such, expendable.

Hope moved in with Vanessa. Andreas had been seen out with a string of gorgeous models and celebrities while Hope was home grieving.
Hope had found herself pregnant. At six months gestation, she decided to let Andreas know about the pregnancy.
He said he would accept a parental role and cover all her expenses and settle money for the future, but he'd had no plans to marry her, not ever.

Andrea's cheating sister had to confess the truth about her lies against Hope.
Andreas was furious. He had failed Hope by believing his spoilt, malicious sister.

He bought a house in the country and had asked Hope to marry him, after all, she was carrying his child. Hope said no. She instead suggested the two of them live together.
Since, Andreas had been kind, affectionate, supportive, entertaining and as always, sexy.
Hope could not do anything but forgive him.
He'd confessed that he hated his life without her in it.
He loved her!
Wedding bells ensued and soon their daughter came into their life.
I wonder if Andreas would have ever returned back to Hope if she hadn't been pregnant.
Somehow l doubt it.
Not one of Lynne Graham's best.

I gave up. No more Lynne Graham for me in the future. The last time I read a Graham book, I almost DNFed it because of some misogynistic crap that was in the book. At that time, I understand why authors write that way because it was published around the 90's.

description

But this book is published around 2005 so I have this expectation that though this may be a cliche and eye rolling romance, I expect something better.

description

The Greek Tycoon's Convenient Mistress is so full of irritating scenes between the h and H. The hero accuses the heroine of infidelity and won't even listen to her side. He calls her a slut and so much more that if the guy is in front of me, I would have punched him.

What really irritates me is that despite the guy being a massive a-hole to her, she can't help but have sex with him. Mind you, the guy insulted her 5 minutes ago and when their gazes locked at each other, the room was filled with electricity and crap that they began making out.

description

I hated it. I hate how she just easily forgive the guy who insulted everything about her and who can't even trust her. I hate how this kind of shit is romanticized because girl, no matter how much you love a person, you don't let them get away when they say shit about you. The hero didn't even properly say sorry and he didn't even groveled for you forgiveness.

Like gurl, what the hell?

Well, what can I about a book that has 'Greek", "tycoon", "Convenient", and "Mistress". You get what you asked for. Hope aka the Harlequin doormat is on love with alpha Andreas who has as much confidence in Hope's ability to survive as he would a toddler. The kind of heroine who defines TSTL and doormat, Hope finally figures out that Andreas will never love her.

Lies abound with the H's horrible sister, and Andreas becomes abusive. There should be a study on why we read about abusive heroes like this. Andreas says some cruel, offensive, hateful (I could go on) stuff that should not be allowed by law. The h licks her wounds and floats out of his life. Hope stands up to him a teensy bit, but, come on, Lynne Graham, you know what we want. WE WANT THE HERO TO GROVEL!!!! We want pain so bad he's in intensive care crying like the big baby bully he must be. Sadly that does not happen as once again we have a pathetic doormat with the spine of a worm. None.

Yet, still, somehow - someway I gave it three stars which is why I will remain anonymous. Heh heh.

No time to write a proper review but here are my random notes.

- didn't like the overly sunny, Pollyanna-ish, doormat, gave-up-her-life-for-family heroine, LG did a much better job with the heroine in Spanish Groom

- didn't like the hero, too much a jerkwad, too much abusive language, the 'you're a slut cuz you gave up your virginity to me' scene

- didn't like the sex scene at the start, reading about characters having sex when I'm not invested in them makes me feel skeevy

- too many misunderstandings

- too much talk about her turquoise eyes and his glorious cheekbones, and at the most bizarre times too, like in the middle of an angry exchange: "That's absolutely horrible!" The faintest tinge of dark colour demarcated the angular bronzed planes of the aristocratic cheekbones that enhanced his superb bone structure. "That isn't how it was!"

- most crazy HP moment: the bitchy sister who breaks them up with lies

- best seduction line evah: "I'll buy you chocolate every day"

- liked how the hero felt insecure at the end, was so jealous of Ben, and was the one that wanted marriage

- liked that the heroine wouldn't marry him without ILY's despite being prego

- the last 50 pages was the best and brought it up from 2* to 3* for me

Dumb virginal heroine jumps into bed and a two year affair because she's soooinluvvvv with hero. Yucky: a Pollyanna and a self-styled martyr to boot. (Warning: Don't give her two planks of wood as she'll merrily build her own cross.)

I honestly think she deserved to be dumped in that manner in perpetuum until she learns to grow up and respect herself. Hellooo? If she's been living in with a man for two years and he doesn't even broach topic of long-term commitment or introduce her to a single member of his family, I'm sorry but he's just not that into her. Do we need a public service announcement to get this message across to writers young ladies and George Clooney's mistresses?

Hero isn't any better either. Point 1: Calls her foul names and he thinks it's acceptable because he's angry. Point 2: Believes his spoilt sister over heroine whom he knows very well has never ever lied to him before. Where's the trust? Point 3: Telling heroine to vacate the apartment pronto displays his total lack of concern for her welfare. I would have torched the bed. Point 4: Walks away from two-year relationship without remorse. Chopped liver is looking better than the girl here. Point 5: Accuses her of infidelity without evidence (and how did he become a tycoon with all these illogical, emotional, over-the-top conclusions?)

The writer tries to redeem the hero by depicting him as extra supportive during heroine's pregnancy and by making confess to extreme jealousy. Whatever. He should be tarred and feathered just for the verbal abuse alone.

End of rant.

Two stars simply because the hero was unnervingly faithful and by the end of the book very insecure about his place in the heroine's life.
Otherwise, nothing really special for me, he has ZERO faith in her and ALL the faith in the world in the sister who has the moral of a most immoral being in the world!
He also ONLY offered marriage AFTER he had proof she was faithful, and just about two days ago he had thrown to her face that he will never offer her marriage.
She should have NEVER married him.
Also what on earth is a mistress????? It WAS a de facto relationship.
He only called her a mistress when he threw her out and at the verge of a temper tantrum.
She of course used it to kill since then, but that's besides the point!

Andreas Nicolaidis has an affair with Hope Evans but he is not serious about her since obviously before her he liked his relationships short and sweet. Plus his father had married 3 or 4 times, not such a good role model. Two years later the hero's sister makes the hero believe that the heroine is cheating on him and is having an affair with Ben. Andreas is furious and breaks up with Hope. Soon after their break up Hope starts dating Ben. To me this is not an action of a woman who is a doormat so I have no idea why people say this heroine is a doormat. She is determined to move on and her relationship with Ben is a good one. Ben really cares for her and he is a really nice guy but once Hope realizes she is pregnant she ends things with him and informs Andreas he is about to become a father. In short had the heroine not been pregnant there would be no reunion between Andreas and Hope and that annoyed me.

What I liked about this story is how the hero has been faithful to the heroine all along, he never strayed not even while they were apart and I think his anniversary gift to her at the end of the book was amazing. His mistake was that he took Hope for granted but he grovelled and for me he totally redeemed himself.

Cute sweet read but the romance/love story was weak in my opinion.

I think this one is tough to review.....I debated between a 1 or 2 stars. Two stars because I had to keep reading it to see if she ever formed a backbone. One star because I could not tolerate how spineless the heroine was. Though I recognize that the heroine was really very sweet, she still lacked self-respect.

I kept hoping that on the next page, she would let him have it. But she never did. Oh, she got angry, tearful and even closed the door on him. But, she never stood up against his unconscionable actions.

But through all of this, the heroine is still happy, happy to have hero around, cause she will always love him.

I definitely think Lynn Graham's definition of love and self respect are on the opposite spectrum of mine. How unfortunate given Graham's ability to influence many young women with her writing. It's sad that she isn't willing, or doesn't feel morally obligated, to give women better, more worthy role models.

I finally did settle on one star, cause I felt obligated not to condone this type of writing.

I am a great fan of Lynne Graham and I have to admit that after the 2nd time reading The Greek Tycoon’s Convenient Mistress, I like it even more than before. I know….Andreas Nikoladis is an absolute jerk in the beginning – he’s rich, handsome, spoilt and believes that money can solve any problem in his life. But one of the things the author is able to do is getting her heroes to redeem themselves and become better persons, and that’s exactly what happens in this rather delightful and sweet romance.

Hope is such a sweet and kind and somewhat naive heroine, who sees the good in others and has always put the people she loves first before herself. She could be seen as a rather weak and a doormat kind of person but we see another side of her when things go out of control in her relationship with Andreas due to misunderstandings, lack of trust (in his part) and the cruel actions by rich and spoilt people (his sister’s diabolical actions).
I truly fell in love with Hope – there was something in her that just pulls your heart strings.

No longer will she remain Andrea’s secret mistress – not only for his coldness, his cruelty, his verbal abusive and accusations and not even when she discovers she’s pregnant.

I truly believe that her goodness was what made Andreas realize what a beautiful person he had so quickly discarded. How much she meant to him, how much he missed her in his life. And Hope realizing that she was a person of worth and making Andreas face his demons and emotions.
Half-way through the book, I began to fall in love with this man…I so understood him being such a spoilt brat……..Greeks will do absolutely anything for their first born, believe me!!!!!!

Lest I forget Hope’s love of chocolates…oh wow…the sex scene and chocolate…HOT HOT!!

This is really a fabulous and emotional love story and I promise you – Hope will get into your heart.

He is a manipulative bastard. Never noticed "his mistress" paid for the food the ate at home, cleaned the apartment, etc.; he was super fast to believe "his ex-virgin mistress" was cheating, obviously it was convenient at the time because she'd just asked him (after two years) "What are we? Where is this going?". The only forgiving part is that he believed in his sister, too bad it was the evil/slutty sister.

The h lived in her pink world so I knew he didn't need to get off his high horse, she'd forgive him as fast as he condemned her.

Why did I give it that many stars? Because the heroine's best friend Kiki Vanessa was my fav character. Thanks to her the h had a somewhat awakening. Her closing the door on his face was as much as I could ever hope for her refusing the H.

I love the mistress who doesn't know she's a mistress trope. This one was pretty good. I liked that the heroine was a very up-front, honest person and didn't hide the pregnancy from the hero. I was a bit frustrated with her at times for her lack of pride, but she did finally reach a point where she wasn't taking any more of the H's insulting accusations, otherwise I may have thrown my Kindle against a wall and caused some major damage.

So this is actually one of my favorite books. Yes the heroine, Hope, was TSTL and the hero, Andreas was an alpha male a-hole however, Lynne Graham used all of my favorite HPlandia tropes in this book. Hope is a mistress who doesn't realize she's a mistress. She's used to people taking advantage of her so she doesn't realize how Andreas views her. In Hope's defense, even though she's in her late 20's at the beginning of this book, she's extremely innocent in pretty much every aspect of her life due to her taking care of her sick mother for so long. Andreas uses Hope's innocence and her shyness to turn her into the perfect mistress for him. Andreas has a nasty younger sister who lies on Hope and ruins their relationship. After Andreas kicks her out of his apartment and when Hope starts to move on with her life and date again she discovers that she's close to 6 months pregnant with Andreas child. Now I do have issues with how far along Hope is in her pregnancy. Yes, emotional strain can affect your menstrual cycle but a normal person would see a doctor after at least 2 months without having a period especially when you didn't always use contraceptive when having sex. Anyway Hope is ready to move on without Andreas in her life, after telling him about the pregnancy and him denying he's the father. Andreas realizes that he wants Hope and his unborn baby back (after working out her due date) but Hope isn't receptive, Andreas knows there's an OM interested in Hope and after learning the truth about his sister, he's in a panic to solidify his place in Hope's life (this is a complete role reversal from how they were at the beginning of the book).

This is an easy read that moves along at a good pace and has your typical Greek alpha hero and innocent heroine who is beautiful but doesn't know it and is the victim to other people's evil doings. I liked that you were able to see that Andreas was not handling the breakup well, when he gets upset after seeing a picture of hope in the newspaper with the OM. This is not a real angsty read you can suspend reality.

Nice mistress read. This one had some strong elements.

The story starts as these two meet each other. The attraction is there and they know a relationship will start. Then the book skips ahead 2 years to where the heroine starts to have doubts. So no annoying flashbacks.

When the heroine is accused of cheating, she tries her hardest to explain and make the hero listen to the truth. She seems realistic in that she is vulnerable to him but not to the point of being a ninny. Still I think it's realistic that she is so overwrought about this guy. Women do get that way and can be really silly about men. She tells him about the baby and stands up for herself throughout.

The hero is a jerk to her, but I never felt he was nasty for the sake of being nasty. He was hurt and striking back most of the time when he lashed out and said something. Other times I think he was written realistically as a man so used to being rich and sucked up to that he couldn't even conceive that he was being a jerk. He does show his vulnerability to her also and really can't stay away from her. I think he did do a pretty good job grovelling afterwards and trying to accept whatever she dishes out.

So if you like mistress reads then give this a try.

There were a lot of highs and lows. Hope was a hopeless doormat for a while, and Andreas was a real bastard for treating her the way he did. By some miracle (the author's creative mind), Andreas redeemed himself enough for me to not hate his guts. The ending was good.

I actually thought this book was pretty good. I had to mark it down because of the doormat heroine - because that drives me mad - whom I actually liked but wished she could have been stronger. It also got off to a slow start.

Andreas was in a relationship with Hope...or at least that's what she thought it was. She had no idea he viewed her as his mistress and it gutted her when she found out. Andreas' sister told a huge lie to him to turn him against Hope and there were awful, horrible, cruel words said then he preceded to kick her to the curb. They had been together a very happy two years and he knew Hope had never lied to him but chose to believe his hateful sister and distrust Hope. It also gave him an out of their relationship when he realized that instead of his three-month mistress limit they had been together two full years! He was horrified at the thought.

After she left he realized how much she meant to him but avoided admitting it to himself let alone anyone else. Six weeks or so after their split Hope finds out she is five months pregnant...guess she didn't keep track on her calendar and had no symptoms...lucky her!! When she sets up an appointment to see Andreas to break the news to him, once again he doesn't believe her. He believes it belongs to the new boyfriend, Ben.

It does have a decent grovel and a happy ending. One thing I enjoyed was that she had started dating a very handsome and rich man, a cousin of her best friend. He was crazy about her and was starting to think seriously about them at just the time she found out she was pregnant. Of course they ended their burgeoning relationship. But she was always faithful to Andreas and Andreas remained celibate as well. He said he couldn't be with anyone because 'I only turn on for you!'

This is a type of book where the heroine doesn't have any clue about her position in the hero's life... I don't know I am a mistress...

Positive Side:
* The hero was faithful, even during their separation time. No Cheating for a hero like him.
* Strong Heroine, She even tried to move on unsuccessfully with a friend. I mean- she is an HP Heroine and she tried... That's a lot... But nothing happen with the OM tho!
* The Heroine didn't jump to the idea of marrying the hero unless he loved her. No compromise here. And also I liked the idea of her trying to be independent.

Negative Side:
* He got off too easily.

I am still giving it three stars because of the heroine.

I really hated the hero for believing his evil sister and treating the sweet h so badly. I didn't like the friend's brother story line either. It was stupid. I did end up giving four stars because the H did come around and was celibate while apart. I really think he treated her badly though. It broke my heart.

Grade: B

First LG that I thought was good in 5 tries and that includes the overrated The Spanish Groom which has been voted "Best HP" here on GR. It had two demerits that were guaranteed wallbangers going in - LG's OTT sensibilities and a "hero" who doesn't believe in marrying his "mistress" - but for once, the writing didn't assume that this reader was braindead and insulted my intelligence. Might write a longer review later if I ever have the time and inclination because frankly, LG's OTT needs some skewering love.

I didn't like this book at all, though that may have something to do with my growing annoyance with harlequins.
The heroine is stupid plain and simple, and people use the term naive to describe it but in my experience naive is simply the polite version of stupid/ignorant.
She takes all this B/S from the hero and still accepts him with open arms, yeah she tried to resist and even went out with ben for a while, I still think she was too easy on him and is just one of those perfect usable dolls that i see so often in Lynne Graham novels, girl's that are too forgiving, too stupid, and too usable

Hope and Andreas... Where do I begin? Hope is hopeless really... A 28 year old virgin who sleeps with Andreas at their first meeting (not date, meeting). She becomes his mistress. She thinks she's his girlfriend, even if he never shows her around and she is never introduced to his family or friends. Then one day, two years later, she decides to remember him that is the anniversary of their first meeting and he is angry and dismisses her because he never does anniversaries... She is hurt, so he decides to take her to his sister's party. His sister insults her heavily and tells him that she found her embracing Dan, a man she knows (he's one of her friend's cousin) The dumb hero obviously believes his sister, and dumps her. After some months she starts dating this man, Dan, but she finds out she's pregnant, almost 6 months pregnant. She tells the hero and he says he will never marry her but will provide for their child. She doesn't want to marry him because she has a career and some money now, so she's independent and doesn't need him. He follows her and after some time asks her to marry. She refuses and tells him that she would prefer to live with him without marriage. He is jealous becaus he thinks the real reason of her refusal is she is in love with Dan. In the end he finds out his sister's deception and understand how unfairly he treated the h, so tells her he always loved her and asks her to marry him because he loves her. HEA. This h is really a mean and rude person. He thinks she's not enough for him and that eventually he will dump her and marry a suitable girl. She is naive and stupid. It is really unbelievable that at 28 she is so naive and unbelievable that at 30 she doesn't know she's pregnant until after 6 months. Where does she lives? On Mars? And why she accepts to be treated that way by the hero, having sex with him even when he tells her he will never marry her and he keeps on believing all the lies his sister told him about a woman who, everybody would understant that, is not able to lie or to cheat?? Stupid both of them, they deserve each other.

i cannot understand why some people loved this book. the guy treated her like shit, called her names. the guy was a complete bastard. and the girl is stupid. this book is an example of the 'the more the bastard the guy is the better. the more the stupid the girl is the better. come on, after all the things the guy said, she'd just welcome him, and act as if she was wrong. when the guy admitted that he was wrong, the girl just calmly accepted that shit? seriously? i don't know why this story is appealing. if you find it interesting to read stories where one person is degrading and insulting another and that person just accepts all the shit thrown at him/her, then this story is for you.
