Not your average Italian cookbook! Before reading this ARC, I'd never heard of the Big Mamma franchise, but I'll be in France later this year and I plan to check it out! I've learned that Big Mamma has locations in France, Spain, Germany, England...and of course, Italy...
This cookbook is playfully fun and features classic (and uncomplicated) recipes with spirited names like Panna Wintour, Jon Bon Chovy and Figgin' beautiful, all which can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.
Infused with vibrants pops of color, stunning photography, helpful cooking tips, and iconic Italian playlists, this cookbook celebrates and embodies La Dolce Vita with a uniquely modern twist!
A fun and approachable cookbook that's perfect when you want something yummy and homemade for dinner, but you don't have a lot of time!
This cookbook is broken down into multiple sections, and it's full of multiple time saving tips! The pictures and Illustrations are amazing, and the dishes are scrumptious! I've loved digging through and trying different dishes from here! Definitely pick this up if you're looking for a new cookbook.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book has some classics as well as some new great recipes. I love all the burrata recipes and even more cheese mozzarella balls. The foccia with mortadella bring me back to family buffets at my nonnos house when I was a kid. The added funny bit and recommended ideas add a great flair and touch. Things such as top movies to watch, best cheeses , music , 5 rules for best pasta, love these added bits. I am definatly going to be making more than one of these recipes soon.

⚠️This review was written based on personal opinions and experiences with the book. Individual preferences may vary⚠️
Proving you can go wrong with something that should be at least brilliant, this is an attempt at an Italian cookbook with great reach. But it's a jumble of messy layout, "capische" dual-language interruptions, and plain idiocy (use a mandolin to save time and prevent you cutting a finger on a knife – don't you know the damage a mandolin can do?!). At least the visuals of the cooks aren't the usual studied portraits – no, here this is apparently the result of a huge collective of creators, and so we get a more gonzo cut-out feel, which only adds to the annoyance. As does a range of edible home decors that would need to be seen to be believed.
Just take the first recipe – basically, how to cut a croissant open and put some things inside. We have a headline, then the actual concept or title, then the serving (per x amici – gah!), then in between two hard lines the actual guide about what to do – followed by not one but two tip sections. None of it is laid out to catch the eye on the relevant bits, either – it's thrown on the page. Two recipes down and it's time to learn how to actually measure things – thanks.
Annoyingly, some of the dishes can only be wonderful. Annoyingly, when the headline is what the Italians would call the dish we can see where we are, and so much better than we can when presented with some stupid, vaguely smutty pun. And annoyingly the basics, like pasta dough, pesto and so on, and the glossary, are right at the end. Seeing this was originally a French book you can't help but think they were trying to sabotage their rival cuisine.
This wants to be a new kind of Italian cooking, featuring the classics but with an eye to quirking things up now and again (or was that opinion just the result of the stupid punning titles?). I'd suggest they go back to the chopping board, and learn to do the tried and trusted things well first, before getting tricksy and unedifying such as some of the pages are. I was left with some intrigue about how a few dishes would taste (a red wine and sausage risotto, principally) but with no inclination to get on board with this cockamamie effort. Instead the 300pp seemed to portray the world's biggest souffle sag – an ugly result of something so appealing and potentially delicious.
Chock full of Italian recipes that you can make in 30 minutes, Big Mamma is approachable and FUN.
Broken down into sections – Aperitivo, Antipasti, Primi, Secondi, Contorni, Pizze, Doli, and Back to Basics -- there are lots of tips for saving time, selecting your produce, what cooking utensils you need, the 10 ultimate Italian cheeses, rules for making an authentically Italian carbonara, how to choose dried parmesan or pasta, must-try Italian wines, how to make your own Limoncello, and more. A Minute to Spare tips are peppered throughout the book, offering suggestions of little things you can do to make the recipes even more special.
The cleverly-named recipes (Jon Bon Chovy, Britney Spearagus, La Dolceviche, Carpaccio Diem, Julius Caesar) are easy to follow with measurements in both cups and grams. The photography is simple, with good representations of the finished product. Fair warning though, unless you have an Italian market nearby, you’re likely going to need to substitute many of the ingredients. (One cheese or olive for another, for example.)
You’ll find things like crispy fried Caciocavallo (cheese), croquettes, tarte tatin with tomatoes, big veggie carbonara, Risotto with sausage and red wine, four cheese gnocchi, lasagna, caponata, pizza with burrata and Coppa, pistachio tiramisu, ricotta mousse, and lots of other old classics and new favorites.
This is a really lovely book, full of humour, tips, ideas and great pictures of the dishes and of the team.
Created by the Big Mamma group of restaurants, the book covers all chapter of the Italian menu: aperitivo, antipasti, primi, secondi, contorni, pizze, dolci and a number of basics like pesto, fresh pasta and more.
The recipes have original names and are mouth watering, very clearly explained and designed to be made in 30 minutes. As if to challenge the readers to keep within this time, there is always a little add on about what you can do with the spare time. A lot of attention is devoted to the ingredients as the Italians are so careful about the choices they make in this respect. The authors give many tips about how to choose your ingredients and about cooking techniques.
And beyond the recipes, the book also shares many entertaining tips and information about the Italian culture and foods: Italian cheeses, films, how to choose a good parmigiano, wines, seasonal ingredients, Italian songs to round off the evening and many more.
I also liked the Index which offers a list of recipes by chapter of the menu, and by ingredients. This makes it a lot easier to find your way through the book.
A really nice book, full of energy and humour, and many recipes that will find their way onto my plate very soon.
This recipe book was a must-read for me, having moved to Italy and loving (most) Italian food, and it's definitely an amazing one. There are SO many recipes in here! It was way longer than I was expecting, with the recipes helpfully broken up into groups with contents pages at each section to easily find recipes without having to flick through too much. There's also an ingredient index at the back so if you know you want a recipe with artichoke you can easily find your options! Interspersed throughout the recipes were cool pages of other facts and things, like a page on the top 10 cheeses, or a page of 9 cool facts about Italy, Italian music and film suggestions and so on. There were also some extra mini bonus recipe-type things, not part of the 30 minute recipes but if you want to know how to make your own limoncello (that will take you a month) you can certainly do that. The writing was funny and made it an interesting read and the recipes all had a photo of how delicious the food will look! I've already added one of them to our meal plan for next week! One of the easier ones to ease me into though of course. Fingers crossed it goes well!
Cooking and humor go hand and hand and this book does not lack either. I love Italia cusine . This book is filled with great recipes from Cheese Pops to Beignet and the Jets (looks yummy by the way) it will take you through how to make them all. There are tips and fun information throughout the book. The pictures are so inviting and appetizing I start saying I want to make this one and see another and change my mind. I did like the 10 Ultimate Italian Cheeses as I love any cheese. I do think this book is for the advanced cook as I think some of the recipes are not for the novice. The index is done very well also by category and by ingredient. I recommend this book for anyone who loves true Italian Cusine.
This is a fabulous cookbook. The recipes are lovely, delicious, easy to follow and the photographs are beautiful. What sets this apart is the humor. It’s a fun read. I read in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. It usually helps me get back to sleep. This one had me hungry, earmarking recipes to make and laughing out loud. I’ve made the pomodori gratinati, leeks grigliati, tagliatelle al fungi porcini, and the risotto all monzese thus far and yum! It was a rainy week and cooking is stress relief for me. Can’t wait to try many others. This would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a fun, fabulous, authentic Italian cookbook! The photos are beautiful, the instructions are clear, and the dish names are hilariously punny.
This cookbook takes its food and ingredients seriously, but adds whimsy throughout. Food - cooking and eating - should be enjoyable and this book captures that perfectly. My Italian heart is full.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion for the opportunity to view an early copy in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Big Mamma Italian Recipes is a quirky fun cookbook. I love all the little humorous bits with punny recipe names and little doodles.
The cookbook includes Apretivo, Antipasti, Primi, Secondi, Controni, pizze, dolci, and back to basics. The recipes are easy to follow and have clear instructions. This cookbook is amazing for an authentic Italian recipes.
I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This cookbook is trying too hard to be cool and hip, but it fails to engage the reader. The recipes seem great, except there are only classic Italian recipes that you can find one click-distance away on the web. There's nothing personal in this book nor is there an unique voice throughout the book.
Also, it's way easier to cut your finger with a mandolin than with a knife, guys!
I knew when I saw this I needed it! As a huge fan of the Big Mamma restaurants, I can’t wait to try out these recipes (all with fantastic, punny names). The book keeps with the fun and quirky brand of the restaurants, and each recipe has a fun quote or line of “advice” which we’re all very entertaining and overall the book encapsulates the fun and Italian theme of the restaurants.
Thank you Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, White Lion Publishing, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This fun book is full of authentic Italian recipes with punny names. Clear directions and pictures of the finished product make it easy to use. A great addition to any collection.
This cookbook features Italian recipes that can be made in about 30 minutes. The book is fun and bright, and I appreciate the tips throughout. Some of the recipes are out of my cooking comfort zone, but there are enough ideas that I am eager to try!
Thank you NetGalley and The Quarto Group for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Leuk kookboek!
For a recipe book called big Mamma I was unable to find any female chefs. Should he Big Poppa. Recipes are definitely the high calorie restaurant fair the men love.
So many recipes, these are all great and easy to follow. My daughter loved how bright it is as well. I recommend it for anyone that likes yummy food fast!
I’m going to be in the minority here. I did not like this book at all. It was trying wayyyy too hard for me. The recipes were mid at best. It just wasn’t for me at all. Maybe I’m too old
I am a big fan of the Big Mamma group having eaten at all of their London restaurants and was very excited to read their cook book. The book is fun, informative and easy to follow but I was slightly disappointed in the recipes (asparagus with parmesan is hardly a recipe!!) as there wasn't anything new. If you already have an Italian recipe book then the chances are you will already have the recipes.
But, it this is your first Italian recipe book or you are looking for a fun present for someone I would recommend it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read Big Mamma Italian Recipes in 30 Minutes.
This cookbook features fun, authentic, simple, and approachable recipes that don’t take forever to make. It includes a wide variety of recipes, from simple appetizers to desserts, that I would have thought were much more complex if you just put the finished product in front of me. I enjoyed the humorous tips, and the photos were fun and colorful. Cooking should be enjoyable, and this cookbook did not disappoint.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
An ode to Italian culture, this cookbook is fun and fast-paced, and you will find yourself rushing through the little notes at the bottom to have a good smile. The idea of this cookbook is to prepare quick, delicious, and not pretentious, Italian food. I don't know why there were so many photos of the cooks involved in making this book in bath scenes with food instead of water, but sure, why not, as long as the dish is good at the end... Those were not as fast recipes as I thought I would find, nor necessarily as easy, but they are definitely all looking delicious (though be warned, dieting is certainly not an option in this book!)
