Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht was a German poet, playwright, and theatre director. A seminal theatre practitioner of the twentieth century, Brecht made equally significant contributions to dramaturgy and theatrical production, the latter particularly through the seismic impact of the tours undertaken by the Berliner Ensemble—the post-war theatre company operated by Brecht and his wife and long-time collaborator, the actress Helene Weigel—with its internationally acclaimed productions.

From his late twenties Brecht remained a life-long committed Marxist who, in developing the combined theory and practice of his 'epic theatre', synthesized and extended the experiments of Piscator and Meyerhold to explore the theatre as a forum for political ideas and the creation of a critical aesthetics of dialectical materialism. Brecht's modernist concern with drama-as-a-medium led to his refinement of the 'epic form' of the drama (which constitutes that medium's rendering of 'autonomization' or the 'non-organic work of art'—related in kind to the strategy of divergent chapters in Joyce's novel Ulysses, to Eisenstein's evolution of a constructivist 'montage' in the cinema, and to Picasso's introduction of cubist 'collage' in the visual arts). In contrast to many other avant-garde approaches, however, Brecht had no desire to destroy art as an institution; rather, he hoped to 're-function' the apparatus of theatrical production to a new social use. In this regard he was a vital participant in the aesthetic debates of his era—particularly over the 'high art/popular culture' dichotomy—vying with the likes of Adorno, Lukács, Bloch, and developing a close friendship with Benjamin. Brechtian theatre articulated popular themes and forms with avant-garde formal experimentation to create a modernist realism that stood in sharp contrast both to its psychological and socialist varieties. "Brecht's work is the most important and original in European drama since Ibsen and Strindberg," Raymond Williams argues, while Peter Bürger insists that he is "the most important materialist writer of our time."

As Jameson among others has stressed, "Brecht is also ‘Brecht’"—collective and collaborative working methods were inherent to his approach. This 'Brecht' was a collective subject that "certainly seemed to have a distinctive style (the one we now call 'Brechtian') but was no longer personal in the bourgeois or individualistic sense." During the course of his career, Brecht sustained many long-lasting creative relationships with other writers, composers, scenographers, directors, dramaturgs and actors; the list includes: Elisabeth Hauptmann, Margarete Steffin, Ruth Berlau, Slatan Dudow, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Paul Dessau, Caspar Neher, Teo Otto, Karl von Appen, Ernst Busch, Lotte Lenya, Peter Lorre, Therese Giehse, Angelika Hurwicz, and Helene Weigel herself. This is "theatre as collective experiment [...] as something radically different from theatre as expression or as experience."

There are few areas of modern theatrical culture that have not felt the impact or influence of Brecht's ideas and practices; dramatists and directors in whom one may trace a clear Brechtian legacy include: Dario Fo, Augusto Boal, Joan Littlewood, Peter Brook, Peter Weiss, Heiner Müller, Pina Bausch, Tony Kushner and Caryl Churchill. In addition to the theatre, Brechtian theories and techniques have exerted considerable sway over certain strands of film theory and cinematic practice; Brecht's influence may be detected in the films of Joseph Losey, Jean-Luc Godard, Lindsay Anderson, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Nagisa Oshima, Ritwik Ghatak, Lars von Trier, Jan Bucquoy and Hal Hartley.

During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the Exilliteratur. He expressed his opposition to the National Socialist and Fascist movements in his most famous plays.

I hate to give a compliantly communist play the full five stars, but boy, does Brecht deserve them! Communist or not, the play has a takeaway message we can all buy: DO YOUR BEST - AND ENDURE TILL THE END.

Though the plot is unsavoury - Mother Courage is a plain dealing, foul talking Camp Follower in a grisly modern war - this old toothless hag persuades us to Do Our Utmost for the Highest, whatever your most shining high ideal may be.

And hers, though simply her family's survival in an environment of bullets, shrapnel, and bloody chaos, inspires in SPITE of the dirt and vulgarity.

It's never easy, thought Brecht, to get humans to dig in and start constructing a socialist golden age...

(Or rather police state, as it turned out, but Brecht was a little pig-headed.)

So Courage is no quitter, even In such hopeless straits. And that's what stuck in MY head for so many years.

In '68, my Dad had to visit Dartmouth College in New Hampshire for a scientific symposium. I decided to tag along, to immerse myself in a uni environment - I myself was college bound within weeks...

That was a halcyon summer, and as we cruised through the rolling Adirondacks - and lush well-tended farm acreage - I memorized some Baudelaire at conversational hiatuses.

Ah, to be eighteen again!

The cultural life at Dartmouth was to die for, too.

We arrived smack-dab in the middle of a music and drama festival. Mother Courage was the first play I saw. Life was good.

And the weather was the same. I even attended a lecture by Dad's revered thesis advisor, though I understood little of it.

But Brecht's stubborn pig-headedness?

You know, W.H.Auden once remarked pithily to a table-mate, "Brecht shoulda been shot!"

Though I may sympathize, I would then have missed my inspiring memories of Brecht back when the Age of Woodstock was in beautiful bloom!

Mother Courage, with cart in tow is a wheeler and a dealer, travelling across Europe during the 'Thirty Years War'(1618 – 1648) she has found a way to use the conflict for her own gains, ferociously protective of her children is she, but apart from family values, doesn't have morals for much else, and is all too happy to exploit the various regiments of battle. Her existence is under scrutiny from those around her, but her philosophy is to survive at all costs. There is an inner strength and determination that is admirable, regardless of Courage's actions. She endeavours over the years, even after losing some of her children still remains defiant.

"Sometimes I sees myself driving through hell with me cart selling brimstone, or across heaven with packed lunches for hungry souls"

Mother Courage (1939) is one of a number of plays Brecht wrote in resistance to Nazism during the invasion of Poland, and the theme of devastation and war are captured with honour and integrity, and expresses the idea that virtues are not rewarded in corrupt and difficult times.
I have to admit I have never been a big lover of reading plays, as you simply can't see the whole picture unless seen with your own eyes on stage. Having said that, within the first scene the scene is set for something epic, that had me completely engrossed. I say epic, even though it's compressed into 100 pages or so, the story spans many years, but never feels rushed or clichéd, picking out moments from her life that are at times deeply heartfelt but also scathing in detestation.

The family as a whole, including Eilif (the oldest son who goes of to war) and daughter Kattrin (who is mute), are used in the story well, where indignation is never far away. But it's Courage who takes centre stage, a woman with a spirit that will not be crushed by the onslaught of the world around her. I didn't always like Courage, but applaud her valour nonetheless. As for the ending, as in war, there are no happy ones.

We read Mother Courage in school, and I didn't like it. I thought it was exaggerated, even from the perspective of the raging wars that Brecht could refer to. Which parents would sacrifice their children first?

And now I sadly have to announce that I understand Mother Courage. The generation born immediately after the Second World War seems to have forgotten or maybe never known the longterm effects of irresponsible egocentrism, and they are happily sacrificing a whole planet to keep their prestige and their riches and their "revenge" if anybody dares insulting their fragile egos. If you recognise any particular world leader in this description, it is pure coincidence. The Mother Courages of our times are legion.

And they don't have the excuse that they are starving or in danger themselves. They are just in their narcissistic bubbles, and want to live their lives safely inside. Après eux, le déluge. Or the bonfire. Quite literally both.

Brecht, I hate when you are right.

ننه دلاور شخصیت عجیب و جالبی بود. هم زمان میخواست هم فرزندانش رو از جنگ حفظ کنه و هر کاری می‌کرد که اونا درگیر نشند و هم اینکه زیر سایه جنگ میتونست کسب درآمد داشته باشه و روزگار بگذرونه. حفظ تعادل بین این سخت بود و ما در طول نمایش نامه این قضیه رو می‌خونیم. زندگی در جنگ اینو خوب به ننه دلاور فهمونده بود که جنگ یک نکبت بزرگه و هر کاری باید بکنه تا بچه هاش رو مصون نگه داره ازش ولی از طرفی می‌دونست این نکبت بزرگ، از نظر مالی می‌تونه بهش کمک کنه و کاسبی کنه. زیستن زیر سایه جنگ(داستان مربوط به جنگ‌های سی ساله اروپا در قرن هفدهم میلادی است) این فرمول رو به ننه دلاور یاد داده بود و او این روش رو به عنوان بقا پیدا کرده بود پس مثل یک بند باز حرفه ای که تعادلش رو حین راه رفتن حفظ می‌کنه، سعی در ایجاد تعادل می‌کرد. هدف ننه دلاور بقا بود. سپر محافظتی که داشت به این شیوه بود.اما...اما.. اما جنگ خیلی قدرتمندتر و سهمگین‌تر و بی‌رحم‌تر از این حرفهاست و هر چه قدر زبر و زرنگ باشی و در یک بازه زمانی کوتاه مدت به اهدافت برسی، میتونه همه چی رو ازت بگیره. میتونه « زندگی » رو ازت بگیره.میتونه همه اونایی که حفظشون میکردی رو ازت بگیره. مردمان عادی تو جنگ بازنده اند و این از واقعیت های انکار نشدنی است. نمایشنامه ننه دلاور و فرزندان او واسه ما مردمان عادی است.

A mother of three seeks to make her living, amidst the devastation of war, by selling provisions to those who make war. And her single-minded dedication to making money, wherever there is money to be made, has tragic consequences – for herself and for her children – in Bertolt Brecht’s 1939 play Mother Courage and Her Children.

Brecht stands out amongst the German playwrights of the 20th century in a number of ways. Throughout his life – except for the years between the world wars – he seems to have been at odds with the societies in which he lived. Born in 1898, Brecht resisted the patriotic fervour that filled many Germans when the First World War broke out, doing all that he could to stay out of the imperial German army that he saw throwing away the lives of a whole generation of young Germans.

Both Brecht and his literary career thrived amidst the liberal and tolerant atmosphere of the Weimar Republic; but when the Nazi regime came to power, he fled Germany for Switzerland and then the United States. His interest in Marxism caused him to be a subject of FBI investigation, and to be summoned to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Eventually, he relocated to East Berlin – where, in spite of his Marxist beliefs, he criticized the government of the German Democratic Republic after D.D.R. authorities brutally quashed an uprising by East German workers in 1953. His iconoclastic, anti-authority sentiments inform his writing.

And Mutter Courage und Ihre Kinder provides a powerful introduction to Brecht’s work and sensibilities. The play begins in 1624, six years into the Thirty Years’ War of 1618-1648. So, what does a modern reader need to know about the Thirty Years’ War – aside from the fact that it lasted thirty years – in order to properly understand and appreciate the events of this play?

Well, it was an exceptionally long and brutal war. At its core, the cause of the conflict was a Reformation-era disagreement between Protestants of northern Germany and Catholics of southern Germany. But the dynastic politics of Europe came to be involved in the confict – so that, over the course of the war, countries that got involved included Bohemia, Sweden, Holland, and France (on the Protestant side) and the Hapsburg monarchy and the Spanish Empire (for the Catholics).

And it was bloody. Mein lieber Gott, was it bloody. Deaths in the war are estimated as being as high as 8 million, of whom 6.5 million – or 80 percent of the total – were civilians: women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities. Violence against civilians – murder, rape, maiming, torture – was routine on both sides. This conflict was so unremittingly brutal, so filled with atrocities of every kind, that the 1648 Westphalia treaty that ended the war provided a precedent for Geneva Convention-style attempts to establish norms for protecting noncombatants from the ravages of war. And it is no surprise to find that the war accomplished absolutely nothing, except to change some of the power dynamics in European capitals hundreds of miles from the blood-soaked battlefronts.

In one of the title cards introducing a scene of this play, Brecht sardonically refers to the war as “The Great War of Faith.”

Against this background of absolute horror, a woman named Anna Fierling has already become known universally as “Mother Courage” because of the determination with which she has plied her trade of selling provisions to soldiers in the war. Early in the play, Mother Courage explains her nickname to a Protestant sergeant who has never heard of her: “Courage is the name they gave me because I was scared of going broke, sergeant, so I drove me cart right through the bombardment of Riga with fifty loaves of bread aboard” (p. 3).

With a name like “Mother Courage,” it should be no surprise that this character sometimes likes to reflect on the concept of courage – even if the manner in which she does so makes clear that this Mother Courage recognizes that the war from which she is making money is fundamentally a cruel and amoral enterprise:

Poor folk got to have courage. Why, they’re lost. Simply getting up in morning takes some doing in their situation. Or ploughing a field, and in a war at that. Mere fact they bring kids into world shows they got courage, ’cause there’s no hope for them. They have to hang one another and slaughter one another, so just looking each other in face must call for courage. Being able to put up with emperor and pope shows supernatural courage, ’cause those two cost ’em their lives. (p. 51)

This passage shows Mother Courage’s awareness that this war is about nothing other than rich men making themselves richer while poor people die horrible deaths. Mother Courage embodies the untrammeled market-driven laissez-faire capitalist ideal of “sell the people what they want”; the causes of the war, and the ideologies of the two sides fighting in the war, mean nothing to her. The war is a money-making opportunity for her – nothing more.

Mother Courage has two sons – Eilif and Schweizerkas (“Swiss Cheese”) – and a daughter, Kattrin, who is mute. The reader or playgoer feels no surprise at seeing all three of Mother Courage’s children being drawn into the war. Eilif is recruited into the army, where he shows a talent for killing peasants and stealing their cattle; a capital crime in peacetime, it is simply “foraging” in the amoral atmosphere of the war. Swiss Cheese meanwhile becomes a paymaster for the Protestant army.

And Mother Courage spends a good part of the play worrying that her daughter Kattrin might follow the path of Yvette Pottier, a sex worker. When Kattrin puts on Yvette’s hat and boots and mimics Yvette’s sexually provocative way of walking and carrying herself, Mother Courage is outraged: “What you doing with that strumpet’s hat? Take that lid off – you gone crazy? And the enemy arriving any minute!...Want ’em to pick you up and make a prostitute of you? And she’s gone and put those boots on….Off with those boots!” (p. 25) In her moralizing zeal, Mother Courage seems unable to see that Yvette, like Mother Courage herself, is simply a businesswoman making a living off the war.

Yet Mother Courage’s concern for Kattrin’s future looks ahead to the fate that the war will bring to her daughter. Kattrin’s suffering is one of the most wrenching features of Mother Courage and Her Children – right down to a resolution that involves the playing of a drum, in a manner that may cause some readers to think of Günter Grass’s novel The Tin Drum (1959).

Mother Courage and Her Children is a grim play – but it should be. Every time a new war breaks out, with the usual and customary declarations by war leaders about why this war is necessary, and why their side in this war is right, readers who are concerned about what war does to people and societies should turn to this play.

Having escaped from being a background character in Schillers Wallenstein, Mother Courage comes into her own as a true herald of free enterprise. In the middle of the thirty years war (1618-1648) she travels confidently with her wagon full of goods to sell, family and hangers-on. Everybody needs her goods. She can sell intoxicating beverages and anything elseto both the Imperial and Protestant soldiers. She is certain that she can always make money and profit from everybody's misery.

However her belief in the triumph of market forces blinds her to the fact that her situation, family and hangers-on are the product of the war. That the war is a force beyond her power to control, navigate or even benefit from. This is made abundantly clear to the audience who see her lose everything, but also see her stagger on, eventually alone but for her wagon.

A very simple play, works well on radio because that resolves all manner of staging problems as we learn from the play Educating Rita.

Бертольд Брехт написал ее в самом начале Второй мировой войны и считал, что опоздал. Действие пьесы происходит во время Тридцатилетней войны в семнадцатом веке и описывает походную жизнь маркитантки второго финского полка Анны Фирлинг, называемой Кураж. Этот персонаж был позаимствован Брехтом у Гриммельсгаузена, участника Тридцатилетней войны. Кураж и приживает своих трех детей на войне, всех от разных отцов, и теряет их на войне. Каждого по-своему страшно и трагически. Самая метафоричная фигура из детей – это немая Катрин. Это как голос совести, которого не слышно, но который должен быть услышан. И Катрин заставляет себя услышать, забравшись на крышу и громко стуча в барабан, чтобы разбудить жителей города. Но Кураж не останавливается, она живет войной, кормится ею. Ей все равно, кто победит – шведы или поляки, католики или протестанты. Ей главное, чтобы торговля шла. Сам Брехт писал на упреки, что почему он оставил Кураж приверженной войне: «Автору нужно, чтобы зритель прозрел.» Да, важнее, чтобы читатель или зритель прозрел. Гений Брехта в полной мере проявил себя в этой пьесе.

برای ماهایی که توی ایران، مخصوصا این دوره از تاریخش زندگی کردیم صحبت‌های برشت جدید نیست؛ بخش قابل توجهی از اون‌ها رو شخصا دیدم. با توجه به اینکه اولین مخاطب‌های این عصر، مردم آلمانی بودن که نازی‌ها و اعتقادهاشونو دیدن، پس احتمالا اون‌ها هم با این قضیه آشنا بودن. خیلی راحت می‌تونم تصور کنم که بخشِ بزرگی از مخاطب‌های برشت با عقایدش موافق بودن. اما مسئله اینه که چطور، منی که تقریبا تمام این صحبت‌های برشت رو می‌دونستم و از قبل هم فهمیده بودم، اینقدر تحت تاثیر قرار گرفتم؟ برشت چطور همزمان از تکنیک فاصله گذاری استفاده می‌کنه و از اون سمت این حجم از همذات‌پنداری رو با کاراکتر‌هاش میشه حس کرد؟

قبل از اینکه سراغ خودِ نمایشنامه برم، بهتره خیلی مختصر در مورد برشت و تئاترش صحبت کنم. برشت تئاتری به اسم اپیک رو پایه‌گذاری کرد که دقیقا برعکس تئاتر دراماتیک بود، تئاتر اپیک مسئله‌ای به اسم فاصله‌گذاری رو وارد اجراها کرد. فاصله‌گذاری یعنی به مخاطب یادآوری می‌شه در حال دیدن تئاتره و تمام این‌ها قصه‌س. هدف هم برانگیخته‌ کردن این مخاطب بودن تا داستانی که می‌شنوه و می‌بینه تاثیر بیشتری بذاره. توهم تئاتر باید حذف بشه تا نویسنده/کارگردان تئاتر بتونن پیام خودشون رو به کامل‌ترین نوع به مخاطب انتقال بدن. برشت نیاز داشت مخاطبش تا دستکم تا چند ساعت بعد از اینکه از سالن تئاتر خارج شد به چیزی که دیده فکر کنه؛ تئاتر دراماتیک خیلی وقت‌ها نمی‌تونه به خودِ خودش این کار رو برای مخاطب انجام بده. بهترین توضیح در مورد این قضیه رو می‌تونیم توی دیدگاه برشت به هنر ببینیم:
هنر، آینه‌ای نیست که واقعیت رو انعکاس بده، (بلکه) چکشیه که واقعیت رو شکل می‌ده.
به نظرم دونستن این قضیه برای درک تمام نوشته‌های برشت لازمه. اون نمایشنامه رو به شکلی نوشته که حتی اگه کسی بخواد یکی از صحنه‌هاش رو اجرا کنه، ناچارا اون فاصله‌گذاری اتفاق میوفته. جز اینکه خیلی توی متن دست برده بشه.

این نمایشنامه در دوازده پرده نوشته شده. بعضی از این پرده‌ها طولانی هستن و بعضی از اون‌ها صرفا شامل یک شعر می‌شن که من حس می‌کنم برای فاصله‌گذاری وارد نمایشنامه شدن. برشت برای اینکه به مخاطب یادآوری کنه در حال دیدن تئاتره، نه زندگی واقعی، اول هر صحنه تمام اتفاقات مهم اون رو می‌نویسه (موقع اجرا هم این کار رو روی یک پرده‌ی بزرگ کنار صحنه انجام می‌داده.)، برای همین هیچ تعلیقی توی این اثر دیده نمی‌شه، برشت نمی‌خواد با تکنیک‌های داستان‌سرایی حواس کسی رو پرت کنه، تمرکزِ ما روی مفاهیم می‌بره. این اتفاق فقط یک‌بار توی صحنه‌ی یازدهم با ابهام همراه می‌شه که جلوتر در مورد صحبت می‌کنم.

ننه دلاور ساختارِ اپیزودیک داره، به طور کلی یک روند از نقطه‌ی الف به ب رو طی نمی‌کنه، با اینکه کانسپت‌هایی مثل ترس از صلح، از دست دادن بچه و مصیبت‌های جنگ توی هر صحنه ظاهر می‌شن، اما برشت نمی‌خواد این حس رو به مخاطب منتقل کنه که قراره اتفاقِ خاصی بیوفته. ننه دلاور بیشتر از اینکه نگران سلامتی بچه‌هاش باشه، نگران تموم شدن جنگه و جنس‌هایی که نمی‌تونه بفروشه. تا آخر داستان هم این نگرانی باقی می‌مونه. از سمت دیگه توی خیلی از پرده‌ها اتفاقِ خاصی نمی‌افته، یک لحظه از زندگی کسیه که توی جنگ و دنیای جنگ زده در حال حرکته. من درست نمی‌دونم این ساختار رو پیش از برشت کسی اجرا کرده یا نه، اما تا حدودی مطمئنم که ننه دلاور از اولین و شجاعانه‌ترین نمونه‌های استفاده از ساختار اپیزودیکه.

و بالاخره، بخشِ مورد علاقه‌م که این همه مقدمه‌چینی کردم تا بهش برسم: شخصیت‌ها
اول هم بگم که من با تمام اون ریویو و نقد‌هایی که ننه دلاور رو یک کاراکتر نمادین معرفی کردن مخالفم. منتقد‌ها کاملا اشتباه می‌کنن که شخصیتی مثل ننه دلاور رو داستانی می‌دونن و اعتقاد دارن توی دنیای واقعی کسی اینطور رفتار نمی‌کنه. این نوع رفتار خیلی هم زیاد پیش میاد. بذارین براتون یکی از اتفاقاتی که توی این مدت برای خودم افتاد رو تعریف کنم:

شخصِ خیلی عزیزی اطراف من هست که شغلش سامان‌دهی به فوت شده‌ها از کرونائه (البته باید بگم شغلش این نیست، اما وزارت بهداشت فهمیده بهتره ایشون این کار رو انجام بده.). من این فرد رو سال‌ها قبل از کرونا می‌شناختم و می‌دونم مرگ یک موجود زنده، حتی خشک شدن گیاه، کاملا اون رو بهم می‌ریخت و روزش رو خراب می‌کرد. اما از وقتی کرونا شروع شد، شبانه روزی آمار مرگ و میر از زیر دست این فرد رد می‌شه، هر روز وقتش رو توی قبرستون می‌گذرونه تا مطمئنه بشه موارد بهداشتی برای خاک‌سپاری رعایت می‌شه؛ کلِ مرگ و میر یک استان بزرگ و صحبت با بازمانده‌ها گردن ایشونه. چند ماه پیش یکی از اقوام نسبتا نزدیک ما فوت کرد و این آقا، قرار بود خبر مرگ رو بهم بده. من توی عمرم لحنی به این خشکی و بی‌تفاوتی به نسبت مرگ رو نشنیده بودم.
اگه کرونا و شمردن مرده‌ها بتونه این بلا رو سر یک نفر بیاره، تصور کنین زندگی وسط جنگ برای چند سال با مردم چیکار می‌کنه.

ننه دلاور از نظر من خیلی منطقی بود، حتی بیشتر از اونی که بتونیم اون رو یک شخصیت منفی بدونیم. اون انسانیه که توی جنگ بزرگ شده، سعیش رو می‌کنه فرزند‌هاش رو زنده و سالم از این مصیبت رد کنه. اما آخرِ همه اولویت اصلی خودشه و خودش. یک شخصیت احساسی زمانی که سویسی، پسرش، قراره اعدام بشه بدونِ هیچ فکری تمام تلاشش رو می‌کنه. اما ننه دلاور حاضر نمی‌شه گاری و وسایلش رو بفروشه چون مطمئنه اگه این کار رو بکنه خودش و کاترین از گشنگی می‌میرن. خیلی ساده می‌شه معادله‌ی داخل ذهن دلاور رو فهمید. ترجیح می‌ده پسرش بمیره (با اینکه ناراحت می‌شه) تا اینکه نجاتش بده و هر سه نفر با هم بمیرن. هر چی هم نباشه، ننه دلاور این همه سال مرگ و میر دیده، شاید هر روز با جسد سربازهای مختلف رو به رو شده و وسطِ جهنم راه رفته (اون طور که خودش می‌گه.) مرگ برای اون جدید نیست و باهاش کنار میاد، ولی ترجیح می‌ده جون خودش و کاترین رو در خطر نندازه.
از اون سمت قاضی عسکر رو داریم. نماینده‌ی کامل مذهب توی این نمایشنامه. قاضی عسکر مواجه‌ش با مرگ و جنگ، پیش از اینکه همراه ننه دلاور بشه، حالت متفاوتی داشته. خطر مرگ اون رو تهدید نمی‌کرده و مرده‌های جنگ رو شهید می‌دونسته، برای همین فشارِ نیستی و مرگ کمتر روی اون فشار اورده. تا اینکه همراهِ دلاور می‌شه و اگه صحنه‌ی پنجم رو بخونین، متوجه می‌شین چه قدر این دنیابینی متفاوته:
قاضی عسکر داره سعی می‌کنه زخمی‌ها رو نجات بده و یک بچه رو از زیر آوار بیاره بیرون، اما دلاور حتی حاضر نیست تکه‌های پارچه‌ش رو برای بستن زخم به کسی بده.
بار اولی که این صحنه رو خوندم خیال کردم برشت قصد داره در مورد بی‌رحمی دلاور بگه. بار دوم زمانی بود که نمایشنامه رو تموم کردم و مطمئن شدم صحنه‌ی پنجم رو اشتباه خوندم. اگه با دقت این صحنه رو بخونین متوجه می‌شین که دلاور دوتا چیز رو می‌دونه، اول اینکه قراره دوباره به این منطقه حمله بشه، اونایی که زنده موندن قرار نیست خیلی وضعیت مناسبی داشته باشن. جلوتر اشاره می‌شه که هر شهری که نابود می‌شه بعد از مدتی به قحطی می‌خوره. دلاور می‌دونست پارچه‌هاش قرار نیست وضعیتی رو عوض کنن، اگه اون‌ها رو به یک جسد ببنده فرقی نداره با بستنش به زخمی‌ها.
نمی‌دونم واقعا چرا این قدر مردم از ننه دلاور متنفرن، در حالی که منطقی بودن شخصیت‌های دیگه توی رمان و نمایشنامه‌ها رو تحسین می‌کنن. منطقی بودن توی یک زندگی شهری آسونه، اما اینکه زیر این همه فشار یک نفر کنترلش رو از دست نده و احساساتش رو سرکوب کنه (چیزی که به وضوح می‌بینیم) خیلی سخته و ننه دلاور انسان قدرتمندیه.


به جز ننه دلاور، کاترین تنها شخصیتیه که توی کل نمایشنامه هست. دخترِ لالِ دلاور که... من رو بهم ریخت. جزئیات این شخصیت، زندگی و مرگش قراره تا سال‌ها توی ذهنِ من بمونه. کاترین حتی نمی‌تونست حرف بزنه و کاری بکنه، خودش حس می‌کرد اضافه‌س. از اون سمت همیشه آرزو داشت یک زندگی داشته باشه، کسی که بهش محبت کنه. صحنه‌ی نهم رو بخونین، دردناکه. دلاور توی یک دیالوگش سه‌تا مسئله‌ی مهم در مورد کاترین می‌گه. اینجا دقیقا متن رو میارم:
«... چه خواب‌های وحشتناکی می‌بیند! شب‌های صدای ناله‌اش را می‌شنوم، مخصوصا بعد از هر زد و خوردی. نمی‌دانم چه چیزهایی به خواب می‌بیند. برای یک ذره محبت می‌میرد. همین تازگی باز هم یک جوجه تیغی شل و پل توی اسباب‌هایش پیدا کردم.»
همین بخش دیشب اینقدری عصبیم کرد که نمی‌تونستم راحت بخوابم. ایکاش کاترین یک شخصیت خالی و ساخته‌ی ذهن برشت بود. اما می‌دونم توی همین شهرِ من، توی شعاعِ نهایتا 20 کیلومتریم تعداد قابل توجهی هستن که وضعیتِ مشابه با کاترین دارن. کسایی که زندگیشون بابت تصمیمات اشتباه بقیه برای مردم خراب شده.
کمتر مرگی به اندازه ی مرگ کاترین توی این نمایشنامه من رو بهم ریخت و ناراحت کرد. حتی نوشتن این چند خط در مورد کاترین به اندازه‌ی نوشتن بقیه‌ی ریویو ازم وقت گرفت، بارها مجبور شدم از نوشتن دست بکشم تا بتونم خودمو آروم کنم.


خیلی دلم می‌خواد بیشتر در مورد ننه دلاور بنویسم، مخصوصا رفتارهای دلاور به نسبت شرایط و شخصیت‌های دیگه. توی این ریویوی از نمادگرایی این اثر صحبت نکردم چون خیلی تا حالا قبل از من سراغ این موضوع رفتن، یکم تکراری بود.

‏ این نمایش ما را از چندین سال تعمق معاف کرده است .

در یک جامعه‌ی بد، چگونه می‌توان خوب بود و در عین حال آب به آسیاب نامردمان نریخت؟
این پرسش تقریبا در همه‌ی نمایشنامه‌های برشت مطرح می‌شود.در اخلاق برشت هیچ‌چیز جزمی‌ای وجود ندارد:اخلاق او غالبا به شدت پرسش‌گرانه است.
آثار برشت در روزگار ما،با نور افشانی‌ای بی‌همتا در میانه‌ی دو کویر می‌درخشند: کویر تئاتر و کویر هنر انقلابی…
هرکس بخواهد درباره‌ی تئاتر و انقلاب اندیشه کند،ناچار سر از برشت در خواهد آورد.
اما ننه دلاور:
مخاطبان ننه دلاور کسانی نیستند که به شکل مستقیم یا غیر مستقیم،در جنگ‌ها ثروت می‌اندوزند؛ نه، ننه دلاور روی سخن با کسانی دارد که از جنگ رنج می‌برند و از آن هیچ سودی نمی‌برند.این است نخستین دلیل عظمت این نمایشنامه: ننه دلاور اثری است تمام و کمال مردمی،زیرا فهم نیت ژرف‌اش تنها از مردم ساخته است.از تکرار این حقیقت نباید خسته شویم:شناخت برشت،در قیاس با شناخت شکسپیر یا گوگول،اهمیتی دیگرگون دارد:زیرا برشت تئاتر خود را برای ما،دقیقا برای ما،نوشته است و نه برای ابدیت .
ننه دلاور به یاری کسانی می‌آید که ،همچون قهرمان،جنگ را مقدر و خود را ناگزیر می‌پندارند: ننه دلاور نشان می‌دهد که جنگ،از آنجا که رویدادی بشری است،هیچ ارتباطی با قضا و قدر ندارد و بنابراین با تاختن بر علل سوداگرانه‌ی جنگ، می‌توان پی‌آمدهای نظامی آن را از میان برد.اندیشه این‌است.
برشت جنگ سی‌ساله را با تمام وسعت‌اش پیش چشم‌ما می‌گستراند؛در این دیرندِ بی رحم،همه چیز زوال می‌یابد(اشیا،چهره‌ها،عواطف) همه چیز تباه می‌شود(فرزندان ننه دلاور یکی پس از دیگری کشته می‌شوند) ؛ ننه دلاورِ خواربار فروش،که تجارت و زندگی‌اش ثمرات فقیر جنگ‌اند،چنان در جنگ فرو رفته که انگار آن را نمی‌بیند(مگر شاید کورسویی از آن را در پایان بخش نخست) : او کور است،تن می‌دهد بی‌که بفهمد؛ برای او جنگ قضا و قدری است بی چون و چرا.
برای او،اما نه دیگر برای ما.زیرا ما ننه دلاورِ کور را می‌بینیم؛ چیزی را که او نمی‌بیند،می‌بینیم.ما می‌فهمیم که ننه دلاور قربانی چیزی است که خود نمی‌بیندش.تماشاگر می‌فهمد که در این جنگ‌های سی‌ساله او عینا به ننه دلاور می‌ماند: رنج می‌کشد و ابلهانه از توان خویش برای پایان دادن به فلاکت‌اش غافل است.نمایش پردازی برشت یکسره بر ضرورت فاصله بنا گشته و بخش بنیادی تئاتر او در پی تحقیق این فاصله است:…
اینک می‌فهمیم که چرا نمایش‌پردازی‌های سنتی‌ما از بیخ و بن غلط‌اند: آنها دست و پای تماشاگر را می‌بندند:نمایش‌پردازی‌هایی مبتنی بر کناره گیری‌اند.این مرد(برشت) با تحقیر تمامی سنت‌ها به ما می‌گوید که تنها نیمی از وجود تماشاگر باید در نمایش درگیر شود تا او بتواند،به جای پذیرفتن امر به نمایش در آمده،آن را بشناسد.تماشگر هیچگاه نباید به طور کامل با قهرمان همذات‌پنداری کند وگرنه نخواهد توانست آزادانه درباره‌ی دردهای خویش و سپس داروی آنها داوری کند.
نمایش پردازی برشت به مامایی سقراط می‌ماند: باز می‌نماید و به قضاوت وا می‌دارد؛
بر آشوبنده است و در عین حال منفرد کننده.نیت مضاعف تئاتر برشت: بیدارکردن و تغذیه‌ی آگاهی سیاسی تماشاگر.
از یک نکته نباید غفلت کرد: دگرگونی ما در برابر ننه دلاور دگرگونی‌ای بی‌همتا است: این اثر برشت،همچون هر اثر بزرگ دیگر،نقدی ریشه‌ای از آفتی است که پیش از او وجود داشته:پس ما به هر حال عمیقا از ننه دلاور درس می‌گیریم: شاید این نمایش ما را از چند سال تعمق معاف کرده باشد.

سخن برشت این است: درمان دردهای انسان‌ها در دستان خود آنهاست:پس می‌توان دنیا را تغییر داد:هنر می‌تواند و باید در تاریخ مداخله کند؛


دیالوگ مورد علاقم از کتاب :
‏ -نگاه کن،دارند مارشال را در گور می‌گذارند.این لحظه‌ای تاریخی است.

دوستی دارم که به وقت بحث گاهی به من میگه تنبلی نکن بدین معنا که راه ساده‌سازی شده و توضیح سرراست معمولاً به سمت حقیقت رهنمون نمیشن. از قضا دوست من گرایش‌های چپ داره و بیشتر وقتی من رو غیرمستقیم به تنبلی متهم میکنه که با چنتا فکت تاریخی از شرق و غرب نسخه‌ی چپ‌ها رو در هم می‌پیچم. شاید هم راست میگه و من ترکیبی از لجبازی و تنبلی میشم گاه‌گاه. به هر حال سؤال‌ها بزرگن و مسیر پاسخ علمی اون سر کوه قاف.

از قضا برشت که نمایشنامه‌ی دیگری ازش رو تازه به پایان بردم به وضوح چپ محسوب میشه. چپی که از اول باری که شروع به خوندن ازش کردم شیفته‌ی پیام‌های قدرتمند و روش‌های انتقال پیام ساده و بی‌پیرایش شدم. نه اینکه از صنایع ادبی بی‌بهره باشه ولی از تکلف به دوره. اتفاقا برشت مثل من تنبلی میکنه. از همون اول تکلیف رو روشن میکنه. ایده‌آلیستیه که با دنیای غیرایده‌آل موجود هیچ‌جور سر سازش نداره.

برشت با تیغ برانش خطی روشن بین تاریکی و نور میکشه. برای اون خاکستری‌ها اکثراً خواسته یا ناخواسته در سمت ارتش تاریکی قرار می‌گیرن. اگر حتی بخور و نمیری از قِبَل نیروهای پلیدی به دست میاری و در عین حال فکر میکنی که فضیلت‌های فردیت رو حفظ کردی باید فضیلت‌هات رو به در کوزه انتقال بدی.

سخت میشه ارزش‌های برشت رو به بوته‌ی آزمایش گذاشت. به ویژه وقتی آرامشی سطحی و پوسیده دلِ پر طغیان اجتماع رو پوشونده. اما وقتی قلیان آه‌ها و فریادهای در گلو خفه‌شده از منفذی به سطح میرسه اون وقت در تقابل مستقیم و بی‌پرده‌ی نیروهای اهورایی و اهریمنی می‌بینیم که برشت سخنی به گزاف بر زبان نرانده. و امروز ما این رو از همیشه بهتر با گوشت و پوست و استخون درک می‌کنیم.
ننه‌دلاور پیرزنی است با فضیلت‌های قابل‌توجه فردی که از طریق جنگ نان می‌خورد و در تلاش است فرزندان خود را از جنگ و بی‌عدالتی در امان نگه دارد. تناقضی واضح که در مسیر داستان سر باز میکنه.

پ.ن: یکی از دلایلی که به من کمک کرده راحت به نوشته‌های برشت امتیازهای بالا بدم تحلیل‌های اغلب شگفت‌انگیزیه در چاپ‌های انتشارات نیلوفر از برشت که به صورت مکملِ متن عمل میکنن و حداقل برای من دریافت از متن رو عمق بیشتری میبخشن. اینجا هم از پسگفتار زیبا و موشکافانه‌ی مصطفی رحیمی نمیشه یاد نکرد.

دلاور:
با من مؤدب صحبت کنید. جلو روی بچه‌هام که هنوز از دهانشان بوی شیر می‌آید، به من نگویید که می‌خواهم به شما قالب کنم. من با جنابعالی طرف نیستم. در هنگ دوم من فقط یک ورقه‌ی عبور دارم، آن هم قیافه‌ی نجیب و معصومم است. حالا اگر شما نمی‌توانید این خط را بخوانید، تقصیر من نیست. برای خاطر شما نمی‌توانم مهر به صورتم بزنم."

من گمان می‌کردم که فضیلت علامت خوبی باشد.
دلاور:
نه، علامت این است که یک پای کار می‌لنگد. وقتی که فرماندهی گاو باشد و سربازهایش را به منجلاب بکشاند، بیچاره سربازها باید سر نترس داشته باشند. اسم این نترسی را می‌گذارند فضیلت. وقتی که فرمانده آدم ناخن‌خشکی باشد و از خست، سرباز کم بگیرد، معلوم است که این سربازها از اول تا آخر باید مثل نره‌دیو پرزور باشند....همه‌ی این‌ها خوبی‌هایی است که در یک مملکت منظم، با بودن امپراتور و افسرهای لایق، به هیچ‌کدامش احتیاجی نیست. عقل متوسط مردم بس است. حتی اگر اجازه بفرمایید عرض کنم که آدم حسابی باید کمی هم ترسو باشد."

"قاضی عسکر:
متأثر نشوید، آشپزباشی. شهادت در چنین جنگی رحمت الهی است نه مصیبت. چرا؟ برای اين‌که این جنگ به هیچ‌وجه به جنگ‌های دیگر شباهت ندارد. این یک جنگ عادی نیست، جهاد است. جهاد در راه ایمان است، پس رضای خدا در آن است.
آشپز:
کاملاً درست است. از طرفی این جنگ به جنگ‌های دیگر شبیه است: آتش می‌زنند، کشتار می‌کنند، غارت می‌کنند، و حتی گاه گاهی هتک ناموس هم می‌کنند. اما از طرف دیگر با همه‌ی جنگ‌های دیگر فرق دارد، برای این‌که جهاد مقدسی است. این دیگر بسیار واضح و مبرهن است. با همه‌ی اینها قبول کنید که عطش هم می���آورد."

ننه‌دلاور:

"شما نمی‌توانید مرا از جنگ بیزار کنید. می‌گویند جنگ آدم‌های ضعیف را از بین می‌برد، اما آدم‌های ضعیف در زمان صلح هم از بین می‌روند. در هر صورت جنگ شکم کس و کارش را خوب سیر می‌کند."

"گاهی به نظرم می‌آید که با کجاوه‌ام از جهنم رد می‌شوم و به جهنمی‌ها زقوم می‌فروشم. گاهی به نظرم می‌آید که از بهشت عبور می‌کنم و به ارواح آذوقه می‌دهم. اگر جایی را پیدا می‌کردم که از ترق‌تروق توپ و تفنگ خبری نبود، خیلی دلم می‌خواست که خودم و بچه‌هایی که برایم مانده‌اند آنجا می‌ماندیم و چند صباحی با خیال راحت زندگی می‌کردیم."

"تأثیر محیط بر آدمی از مقوله‌ی تأثیر محیط بر سنگ و گیاه نیست. سنگ و گیاه در ساختن محیط خود هیچ‌گونه تأثیر و دخالتی ندارند، اما در بشر چنین نیست.
جنگ صاعقه‌ای آسمانی نیست. تکرار کنیم که محیط بشری محیطی است اجتماعی و تغییرپذیر، نه محیطی تقدیری و تغییرناپذیر. آتش جنگ را همگان می‌افروزند (چه فرق می‌کند: جمعی می‌افروزند و دیگران بر آن آتش هیزم می‌نهند یا به هیزم‌کشی دلخوشند). کاروانیان ما نیز در این آهنگ ناموزون، سهم خویش را ادا می‌کنند. اگر همگان اراده کنند این آتش به سهولت فسردن اخگری خاموش می‌شود. این آتش در برابر هر یک از افراد – افراد جدا از هم – کوه آتش‌فشانی مقاومت‌ناپذیر است و در برابر اراده‌ی همه‌ی آنان، هیچ."

ننه دلاور نمادی از همه تضادهای ذاتی ما انسان هاست. جنگی دائمی در درون ما.

داستان در مورد مادری کاسب کار و دوره گرد به همراه فرزندانشه. داستان در قرن 17 و طی جنگهای 30 ساله جریان داره. جنگهایی که اگرچه در اصل ناشی از قدرت طلبی بودند اما به بهانه های مذهبی بزک شده بود. حالا در دنیایی که جنگ همه اروپای مرکزی رو بلعیده و قتل و غارت و چپاول و دزدی، به امری عادی بدل شده، ننه دلاور قصد داره فرزندانش رو از جنگ حفظ کنه و از طریق دوره گردی زندگیش رو بچرخونه. تضادهایی که طی نمایشنامه در وجود "ننه دلاور" مشاهده می‌کنیم، ناشی از وجود همین دو حس متناقض "مادری" و "کاسبی" هستن که هر بار ننه دلاور رو به سویی میکشن. سمت و سویی که اگرچه متضاد هم اند، اما بسیار آشنا و انسانی اند. این تضادها به تدریج به جنگی ناپیدا در درون ننه دلاور بدل میشن که‌ در نهایت نتیجه اون چیزی جز احساس سرافکندگی و شکست نیست.

As I am writing this review, I am reading the Good Reads description above which is a stunning masterpiece of misstatement:

"Widely considered one of the great dramatic creations of the modern stage, "Mother Courage and Her Children" is Bertolt Brecht's most passionate and profound statement against war."

Now for the truth. Bertolt Brecht was a communist who wrote parodies to show the workers what is a not to be done. Mother Courage is a vile lower middle class shopkeeper whose obsession with her own selfish petty bourgeois concerns brings ruin down upon her family and allows an intolerable environment in which the rich exploit the poor to perpetrate itself.

Mother Courage is not a passionate and profound statement against war. It is a call to arms for the oppressed proletariat.

Now on to this foul piece of Marxist propaganda which does indeed stage well if misinterpreted as the tragedy of a brave woman trying to fend for family during the 30 years war.

Brecht always felt that stereotypes and clichés should be exploited to the maximum. His Mother Courage belongs to the hated category of camp follower; that is to say she was an itinerant peddler who followed armies on their campaigns. Armies on the move needed food, clothing, tobacco, alcohol and whores in order to make life bearable. Consequently multitudes of goods and service providers (as they are called in ECON 100) followed the armies peddling their wares.

The camp followers did not see themselves as war profiteers. Rather given that the kings had grabbed all the wealth in the kingdoms to pay for their military campaigns, the poor camp followers had no other way to make a living. Unfortunately, military campaigning was as dangerous for the camp followers as it was for the soldiers who tended to rob and murder the camp followers whenever they lacked the means or the desire to pay for whatever it was they wanted.

In highly predictable fashion, Mother Courage's children are killed in this play. At the end, Mother Courage quite alone departs with her peddler's wagon in search of another military campaign. As conventionally staged, Mother Courage is a pathetic and tragic figure. In Brecht's view she simply played a mug's game and lost. She ought to have joined the workers movement and constructed a socialist paradise on earth.

This play is tons of fun in a class room as it typically sparks lively debate. I advise theatre goers to take a pass on this one. Bertolt Brecht wrote his best work in a collaboration with Kurt Weill which produced the Rise and Fall of the Empire of Mahagony, the Happy Ending and the Threepenny Opera all of which are absolutely delightful on stage,

بسیار دوستش داشتم. سرگشتگی انسان امروز رو به زیبایی به تصویر کشیده. موخره مترجم هم تامل برانگیز و بجا بود.
داستان ننه دلاور مادری که در زمان جنگهای سی ساله اروپا که سعی داره فرزندانش رو از جنگ سالم بیرون بیاره در حالی که خودش عضوی از همراهی کننده های جنگه. بخش هایی از کتاب هم که به صورت شعر بوده، به فارسی هم منظوم ترجمه شده که جالب بود

War is an addiction. War is business. War is necessity.

Brecht uses various voices in this play to reiterate these slogans over and over again. Sometimes by the same character. Written during the times when Nazism and fascism was becoming prominent in Europe, Brecht uses an older European war as a setting to voice his point of view on the growing political crisis during '30s. On one hand Mother Courage is a war profiteer which isn't all that new. She finds a way to keep her family fed by peddling food and alcohol to military camps. She follows military camps for years selling things that are hard to come by in a war zone. She, her family and even her business is always at risk of looting or getting killed. Of course she could have simply stayed put in her town and tried to make a living. But that wouldn't have worked out well for a poor woman since the society she lived in was always advantageous for the rich. War would have only made her poorer with all the resources being directed towards war and she followed what basic economics directed her. Follow the war, use war as a client and provide services.

Through the course of play, Mother Courage shares her perception on war, morals, virtue, loyalty etc which is almost Brecht talking to people under Nazi regimen. When her eldest son is recruited by the General, she says-

"Because he's got to have men of courage, that's why. If he knew how to plan a proper campaign what would he be needing men of courage for? Ordinary ones would do. It's always the same; whenever there's a load of special virtues around it means something stinks."

I am on fence on this one. It is hard to ascertain whether Brecht is implying war with a radical propaganda requires what Mother Courage here is talking about or war in general is pointless. Calling out for courage and virtue is propaganda speech while insisting on morality and loyalty is borderline communism. Its quite difficult to understand if Brecht is anti-war or its something else entirely. The irony lies in Mother Courage's view on men fighting the war reducing war to a job provider and soldiers to employees. She adds-

"In decent countries folk don't have to have virtues, the whole lot can be perfectly ordinary, average intelligence, and for all I know cowards."

Brecht detaches country and its people or more specifically he puts an added responsibility on the leader/king/government. It isn't a system that would hold up or work for a long time and Brecht knows it. It is a throwback to growing number of Nazi supporters and changing mental constitution of the nation itself. Its very tongue in cheek and blatantly disregards '30s propaganda. He wasn't entirely wrong with his argument about choosing the right leader. Along the same line he further says-

"The war will always find an outlet, mark my words. Why should it ever stop?"

Really, why should it? Conflicts have always existed and a war is always on in some part of the globe. It just changes route, gives birth to a newer war and a bunch of newer conflicts. In our lifetime we have already seen this happening and right now as I write this review I hear a news anchor talk about the continuing attacks on Europe.

Mother Courage loses her children to war or by products of war. Its the final scene that makes the entire play truly tragic. Mother Courage's daughter, only living child of hers, dies. Mother Courage asks the village folk to take care of the corpse as she has to move on with her business to find another camp. This, for me, negated the entire experience that Brecht had so carefully fulfilled till then. Brecht makes her bow to the only life that she has ever known and continue to be a part of a system that she truly abhors. It is hard to feel sympathy for this character and reconcile with the fact that she moves on with peddling. It is evident Brecht wanted her to be a victim of war just how her children were. In her case, in any moment, she could have stopped. But she didn't.

Maybe that's what Brecht's intentions were. One cannot really stop being part of war just because one wants to. Too sad.

And here we have another high contestant for the Most Boring Play I've had to read for theatre classes.

I can't even say that Mother Courage was awful or horrible, because it was just so boring. I have no idea what the point of this play is. Well, that's not true, I know what its aim is, but is it working? Has this play moved me in an unemotional way, urging me to rethink my life and my choices and take action, as was the purpose of Brecht's theatre?

Ehhh no.

All it did was put me to sleep.

Also, how do you expect me to take anything seriously from a play with a character named Swiss Cheese?

A play of devastating power and unbearable structural symmetry, as Mother Courage, a small time war profiteer fails to learn anything from a sequence of tragedies and continues onwards hoping to find business opportunities, whereas in fact it's only the rich who can make a profit from such misery. Morality and politics and truth are all identical in this magnificent work.

1.نمایش‌نامه، پیوسته در طول جنگهای سی ساله اروپا پیش می‌رود. روایت افراد نظامی و غیرنظامی که سال‌های طولانی از زندگی‌شان در جنگ می‌گذرد. طنز دلنشینش تلخی جنگ را کنار می‌زند. تاکید بیشتر بر اخلاق هر شخصیت و برخورد شخصی هرکس با مسئله جنگ و تاثیر آنان بر روند جنگ است.
2.تفسیر دقیق و روان، به فهم نمایش کمک شایانی می‌کند. واضحا از قصد و طرز فکر برشت می‌گوید و از اتوپیایی که ترسیم کرده.

هشدار: این کتاب پتانسیل بالایی داره که روی طرز فکر و دید شما به مسئله جنگ و هر مسئله‌ای که ذاتا برای نوع بشر آزاردهنده‌ست تاثیر قابل توجهی بگذاره.

I've read (in the Manheim trans*) and taught this play, set in the Thirty Years War, and some others by Brecht, while attending performances of Galileo (at the Schubert Theater, Boston), BAAL (at Trinity Rep, Providence), the Threepenny Opera (at my own Bristol Comm College, directed by Brenner) and two at American Rep, Cambridge, and Brandeis.** Arguably, Brecht's best plays, like this one and Galileo, were written in the US, 1938-39. Prior, as a Marxist pacifist in Berlin until 1938, he mostly translated Moliere's Don Juan and Shakespeare's Corialanus, left Berlin just before Hitler destroyed all intellectuals. He also left the US the day after he was hauled before the House Un-American Activites Comm, 1947.

Brecht's theatrical ideas almost block the good actor by undermining the illusion created on stage, and even the audience's sympathetic participation in the drama. He urges in his "epic" theater the "alienation effect," such as actors speaking in the third person, masks used for wicked people, and other artificiality to discourage audience identification with stage characeters, or belief in the plot. Moreover, Brecht contradicts the best literature with open didacticism, lessons on capitalism and war: which is simply a continuation of business by other means. (War, military items, surely keep the US economy going.)
Even in translation, Brecht wields a hefty proverb. When the Recruiter complains in the first lines, that there's no honor, no loyalty, The Sergeant says:
"It's easy to see these people have gone too long without a war."
"Like all good things, a war is hard to get started."
He later denies there's any religion in the Swedish army camp, as if to be religious is an insult. The Sergeant also confesses, "I always stay in the rear" (just as the German army did behind the Hungarians who were put in the Front against the Russians in Austria (half immediately killed, another section sent to Russian POW camps in caves--my neighbor was there, who surrendered to the G.I's, said they looked well dressed.
As for proverbs, Mother Courage says,
"Oh, won't you come fishing with me? said the fisherman to his worm"
She had just sung:
O Captains, don't expect to send them
To death with nothing in their crops.
First you must let Mother courage mend them
In mind and body with her schnapps. [Ger., wein]


Mother Courage gives all her kids different last names:
"This one, for instance, his name is Eilif Nojocki. Because his father always claimed to be called Kojocki or Mojocki. The boy remembers him well, except the one he remembers was somebody else, a Frenchman with a goatee. But aside from that, he inherited his father's intelligence, the man could strip the pants off a peasant's ass without his knowing it."

Clearly, anti-sentimental, hard-headed, good Courage a rampant capitalist who only values her own kids, rather like the US leader, though her kids lose out because of their honesty and pity.
Brechtian paradox, "Whenever you find a lot of virtues, it shows something is wrong," Cook, "No, something is all right." "No, if stupid leader leads his men up shit creek, they need courage, and that's a virtue....You don't need virtues in a decent country, the people can all be perfectly ordinary, medium-bright, and cowards too for my money"(scene 2 of 11).
In 3, on war of religion, "He had one thing in his favor, the word of God, which was lucky, for otherwise people would have said he was doing it all for himself." Defeat is good for Mother Courage, "One time in Livonia our general got such a shellacking from the enemy that in the confusion I laid hands on a beautiful white horse from the baggage train. That horse pulled my wagon for seven months, until we had a victory and they checked up."
The Chaplain likes war, "War meets every need, everythings's taken care of..." He tells Courage, "I'm a shepard of souls," and she answers, "Sure. But I have no soul and I need firewood." Someone says the war turned the chaplain into a godless bum. He, "Being a bum has made me a better man."

In 9, the Thirty Years War has been going on tfor 16 years, killing half the poeple in Germany, those left laid low by epidemics. Countrysides filled with famine, wolves prowling through the cities.
In 11, Mother Courage is pulling her own cart, having lost her last alive. She hears from the rear, "The Spring is come, And if by chance you're still alive,/ It's time to rise and shake a leg."


* The only major writer since Homer that I've read just in translation. A serious gap for a Comp Lit student: the head of Comp Lit at UCal Berkeley, Blake Spahr, asked me why I took Russian instead of German. Oh, Pushkin, Chekhov, Tolstoy, Griboyedev, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Bunin...

** Pirandello says seeing a play one cannot judge it, becuase so many others have a hand in a given production. See my Review of Sei Personaggi. But I surely feel I can judge Galileo having seen it at the Schubert.

نمايشنامه اي از برشت در مورد انسان.در اين نمايشنامه برشت باز(همانند زندگي گاليله) اين مفهوم را تم اصلي قرار داده است:انسان خودش مسئول تعيين سرنوشت خويش است.اما چگونه؟
ننه دلاور سه فرزند دارد و يك گاري كه كاسبي او است.در بحبوحه ي جنگ،او هم مي خواهد از آب گل آلود ماهي بگيرد و بازار سياه راه انداخته است.
سه فرزند يابو دارد كه به نحوي قرباني زياده خواهي هاي دلاور مي شوند.
هربار ننه دلاور مي تواند دست از شغل خود بكشد و جلوي زيان بيش تر را بگيرد اما عطش كسب پول بيش تر و ترس از فلاكت و فقر راه را بر او سد مي كند.آخر مي ترسد صلح برقرار شود و كاسبيش از رونق بازبماند.
اما نمايشنامه جداي از اين،از پليدي ها،آثار منفي و خسارت هاي جنگ مي گويد؛غارت،چپاول و تجاوز.
نفي پيامدهاي منفي جنگ به قدري تكان دهنده است كه بسياري عقيده دارند بزرگ ترين نمايشنامه ي ضد جنگ مي باشد.

Thought to myself ‘damn, there really is something to this distancing effect, this Brechtian alienation. I am completely alienated from this play. It's actually very disorienting and confusing. What's the use of this?’ Then realized I had navigated to the wrong part of the ebook, skipping completely over the play itself to an appendix that consisted only of lines that had been significantly altered between productions of the play.

Didn't particularly care for the play but maybe it's one of those things that's better seen than read.

Still a very relevant play about war and our sometimes indirect contribution to it. Even though Brecht’s idea of Mutter Courage is that of a character that the reader shouldn’t empathise with, but rather carefully observe in order to notice her involvement in the ongoing war and the way she profits off of it, he himself admitted that most people probably won’t grasp what he was going for.
Even though I can’t say I liked Mutter Courage as a character (which wasn’t the point anyway), I understood her situation and to me at least it didn’t feel so much as if she wanted to make a profit no matter the costs, but more like she tried to provide for herself and her family by making the best out of a bad situation.
One critic mentioned that the viewer doesn’t get any idealised version of reality, there is no point throughout the play that one gets the feeling of a shift, of abandoning or destroying one reality in the hope of a better one. The only reality is the one provided by the Thirty Years’ war and none of the characters try to search for a better one.
From this perspective I guess that the play is quite grim, especially reflecting on the ending and what Courage loses and “wins” during the war. While not a likeable character, I don’t think one should approach the play only with the brechtian interpretation in mind- yes, Mutter Courage profits off of war, but in the end war doesn’t seem to be as profitable as she first had in mind.

„Bertolt Brechts 1941 uraufgeführtes Stück "Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder" ist nicht nur ein Abi-Klassiker, sondern auch eines der zentralsten Anti-Kriegs-Theaterstücke der letzten hundert Jahre.

Mutter Courage, die mit ihren Kindern durch den 30-Jährigen Krieg zieht und die imperialistischen Kriege der Gegenwart meint, versucht wie Alle am Krieg zu verdienen und muss mit dem Verlust ihrer Kinder lernen, dass vom Krieg nur die Herrschenden profitieren. Als zentrales Stück des epischen Theaters enttarnt es dabei auch die Lügen, unter denen Kriege geführt werden: es geht nicht um Religion, nicht um Menschenrechte, es geht um Profit.
Dabei verfällt Brecht aber nicht ins Phrasengedresche und das Herunterleiern tagespolitischer Parolen, sondern macht trotz allem hohe Kunst.“

A book I had to read for school, but by the time I realized it was due on Monday, it was Sunday evening and I couldn't find the book anywhere so I found it in on the Internet in English. Interesting experience.

The book itself was also engaging because of its simple yet interesting writing. I especially liked the inserted songs, so different from the typical choir in the famed antique works.

Okay. We all understand what war is. Fighting; between siblings, countries, rulers, children, co-workers, husband and wife, bosses and employees. And on and on.

We do not always play nice with each other.

And conceptually, that is what causes us to hurt, inflict damage on another.

Or, we can passively retreat and move forward.

I choose the latter. I am too philosophical to consider the merits of the minutiae of the entanglements that regularly persists in any altercation.

Did Brecht make his point on the morality of natural existence through this play?

Who knows and who cares.

Was it the ‘most brilliant anti-war product ever produced for stage?’

I am not sure.

The symbolism is there, the pedestrian is perceptible, the subject matter is clear, and the audience is allowed to sit and watch others of its kind without effect.

Very similar to reading about the Syrian crisis from your bedroom in New York, Tokyo, London.

Not a great piece of work to me. Surely not the best of its’ genre.

But most intellectuals would argue that point with me.

Except, I ain't that smart and I do not like to debate.

I choose peace and love which are equally suspect, but preferable.
