MF paranormal romance.
I really enjoyed this paranormal romance. It has surprisingly well developed characters and plot and it involves my favourite kind of shifters, wolf shifters. I have read so many wolf shifters romances that sometimes I feel that I am reading the same thing over and over again. I did not feel it in this case. Although it could be considered a typical paranormal story with a clueless woman suddenly realising that her lover has an animal side, the writing style was totally engaging and the characters had enough depth to keep you focused.
”What are you?” she moaned.
“I think you know. The stories are true, little girl. There are monsters in the world....
So, he didn't tell you were sleeping with the wolves?”

Gale Stanley comes out strong with her debut novel, Call of the Wilds. Now with the next two books in the Black Wolf Gorge series released, the reader gets a strong introduction to her shifter culture and is drawn into the series. I was immediately taken into the world Stanley creates and never considered not reading the entire series.
In Call of the Wilds, veterinarian Karin Stone escapes the city for quiet Pennsylvania life when she gets a job as the wildlife manager caring for a pack of relocated wolves that have been declared endangered. Little does she know that her pack isn't the only endangered species in Black Wolf Gorge. When a mutilated hiker is discovered and a wild black wolf is captured, Karin is the only protection the wolves have as the town rallies around destroying all wolves.
Malcolm is the only person that comes to Karin’s aid. He isn’t like the other men in the area with their hatred for the wolves. Little does she know that this man is much like the wolves she protects. She falls hard for Malcolm, the sexy outcast she knows little about, but after she gives into her desire for him and they become intimate, he walks away. Karin tries to move on, concentrating on defending her wolves while fighting off the advances of the sheriff. She refuses to fight for a man who doesn’t return her feelings despite a revelation that will change her life forever. Karin’s strength in always taking control over her life despite any obstacle she encounters defines her as a strong heroine.
Her strength is put to the test when Sable, a jealous she-wolf, comes to Black Wolf Gorge. Sable attempts to mate with Malcolm and becomes jealous of the feelings she can sense Malcolm has for Karin. The tension and the sensuality soar as the conflict rises. Sable is merciless in her attempts to create a bond with Malcolm and remove Karin from the picture in search of her own happily-ever-after. She is the villain every reader will love to hate, a well-crafted character that brings out anger in the reader and compels a sense of allegiance to Karin.
The reader will fly through the second half of the book desperately needing to know how the characters will find a happily-ever-after. It is easy for the reader to become connected to the hero and heroine because of the realistically written dialogue, the depth of the characters and the back stories that Stanley takes the time to weave into the book. Call of the Wilds is a solid shifter book with a strongly developed plot and unique storyline. Read it but then be prepared to want to read the others in the Black Wolf Gorge series by this fairly new author. I suspect you won’t be disappointed.

LynnMarie’s Review

Gale Stanley showcased her skills, and dedication to her writing, with her debut novel, Call of the Wilds. I was immediately pulled into the world she created, with vivid characters, and the perfect mixture of action and emotion.

Karin has escaped the city and its haunting memories by accepting a job at Black Wolf. As wildlife manager and veterinarian, she cares for the protected wolves. The job proves to be more difficult than she ever anticipated since every crazed hunter wants the wolves dead. A half eaten human body was found and everyone except Karin seems to be blaming the wolves. If the wolves become delisted, nothing she does will protect them. A black she-wolf is captured and thought to be the killer. It's caged and under Karin's guard until the autopsy from the victim comes in.

Malcolm is the only person that comes to her aid. He isn’t like the other men in the area with their backwards ideas. She falls hard for the sexy recluse, and doesn’t deny her growing desire to be with him. The only problem is that after intimacy, he tries to brush her off. Karin tries to pick up the pieces of her broken heart, while defending the wolves, and fighting off the advances of the town cop. Though she gets a bit weak for my liking in her desperate attempts to keep Malcolm, she redeems herself when she finds out a startling secret about herself. Her motives change, and she is able to focus on the future once again. Still, she will never forget the wolf-man that showed her how to trust again...only to turn out like every other male.

When a jealous she-wolf enters the picture later in the book, the heated tension is off-the-charts! I couldn’t stop reading, desperate to know how things would end up for our hero and heroine. Sable is ruthless in her attempts to break up any potential relationship between our couple. Though I loved her strong female character, I wanted her annihalated for making me so anxious and causing so much trouble!

I just loved the banter between Karin and Malcolm. In fact, all the dialogue in this novel is done so realistically, the characters become larger than life. The sexual tension was strong, and sex scenes themselves very hot, with the right amount of nice and naughty.

If you love werewolf books, and a well thought out plot, with many unexpected turns, you’ll love Call of the Wilds by Gale Stanley. This book is definitely a keeper, and I can’t wait for more from this talented new author!

Veterinarian, Karin Stone, moved to the Wilds of Pennsylvania to be a wildlife manager and care for a wolf pack. A big city girl, Karin, decides to leave the city after a traumatic attack and start a new chapter in her life. Unfortunately, a hiker is found dead from a suspected wolf attack and the locals are gunning for the wolf, and Karin is trying to protect her. When things get out of hand during a confrontation with some locals, Malcolm Connor steps in and aids Karin. Karin and Malcolm are attracted to each other, but Malcolm has a secret, which could tear them apart.

CALL OF THE WILDS is an entertaining shapeshifter romance with a yummy alpha hero. Shapeshifter romances are my favorite genre, and Ms. Stanley doesn't disappoint with this exciting tale. Karin is trying to be strong and overcome her fears after a violent attack. There is only one small quibble, that I have with Karin's character-- she seemed to be a little too trusting at times. Other than this, Karin is a great heroine, who finds the strength to conquer her fears and overcome the many dangers surrounding her. Malcolm is a wonderful hero, who is very protective, but somewhat tortured. After the murder of his family by humans, Malcolm goes a little wild, but soon realizes, that he must allow both aspects of his being freedom. Even so, he is still a bit of a loner. Because of Malcolm's secret and lies told by others, Malcolm and Karin's relationship has some rocky moments, which makes the finale all the more satisfying.

Call of the Wilds is a great read. The characters are believable, and very likeable. The conflicts are strong and add an element of suspense. All in all, this is an erotic romance that has it all: romance, steamy sex, suspense, and an element of paranormal; what's not to love?

I was impressed with the creativity of this author. This was a very unique plot that was carried out quite well. At times 'shifters' books can be difficult to write, but this author was able to do it quite well.
I look forward to reading more series from her.

This was ok as a story but easy to put down. No relationship development but some other good parts.

STORY BRIEF:
Karin is a vet and manages a wildlife refuge. She takes care of a group of wolves living in a fenced area. The locals want to hunt and kill any other wolves and look for excuses to do it. A new wolf enters the area, is caught in a trap and put in a cage. Karin feeds and cares for it. A hunter was recently killed. The sheriff suspects this new wolf did it. Karin meets Malcolm who is a wolf shape shifter. She doesn’t know that. They fall in lust right away. He breaks up with her because he believes she will want children someday, and he can’t make her pregnant. The sheriff sees Karin with Malcolm and is jealous because he wants Karin for himself. He causes problems.

REVIEWER’S OPINION (WITH SOME SPOILERS):
I kept wanting the couple to communicate. She loved him but wouldn’t tell him. He broke up with her but wouldn’t tell her why. She was pregnant but wouldn’t tell him. She sees him with another woman and runs away hurt, but he didn’t go after her to explain. He hears a lie about Karin and believes it without asking her. These miscommunication conflicts were the main conflicts, and they were not very exciting. But I have to say the vague communication didn’t bother me as much as it has in other books – probably because the author was TRYING to provide good reasons for not communicating.

I liked Karin, the refuge environment, and the wolves. There were a lot of sex scenes – explicit – but not as exciting as some others I’ve read. They were ok, but could have used more emotional something. There was almost no relationship development between Karin and Malcolm. But that happens a lot in wolf shifter books. They don’t need to develop a relationship because they are immediately in lust with and drawn to their “imprinted life mates” upon meeting. Don’t get me wrong, Karin is human so there’s no “imprinting” going on, but it’s a “strong immediate connection.”

One thing unsettling was my odd reaction to the sheriff. He was Karin’s only friend. He acted like a friend, but he had ulterior motives. He was always touching her - the small of her back, her shoulder. He wanted her badly. His desire for Karin kind of turned me on. Malcolm didn’t affect me as much because he resisted his desires and broke up with her. The sheriff couldn’t resist. He was desperate for Karin. He wanted to marry her. He fantasized that she would be crazy in lust with him too. When he drugged her so he could take off her clothes, I found it oddly appealing or something. He didn’t rape her. He just treasured the experience of being next to her naked body. Then he told his secretary that Karin spent the night with him. He hoped his secretary would gossip and spread the word. I enjoyed reading about this because it was odd and weird.

I was disappointed at the end because I didn’t know what happened to Sable (the bad she-wolf). I wanted to see some justice or revenge. But that doesn’t happen here because she moves on to have her own book in the sequel “Mating Call.”

Great beginning, great ideas but the start of the « relationship » does not seem real enough to me and way too fast. Also the end is butchered in my opinion, pining everything on one person and that solved everything? Too easy!

After a brutal attack,Karin is left scarred, both physically and within. Karin finds herself more comfortable around those that walk on four legs rather than two. She's especially wary of men. She moves takes a new job moving from the dangerous urban are to the rural but just as dangerous Black Wolf Gorge. As the wildlife manager, it is the job and duty of Karin Stone to protect the endangered wolves of Black Wolf Gorge.
Malcolm Conner is all male. Being a wolf shape shifter, he feels a certain kinship to the endangered wolves. He is also the last of his pack, maybe even his race. Karin invokes feelings in him better left forgotten and dredges up memories of a life he'd rather leave buried.
It seems as though every time she lands herself into trouble, Conner shows up at just the right time to lend a hand. Grateful for the assistance but unsure of the attraction she feels for the man, she struggles to separate work from pleasure.
Conner knows that getting involved with Karin would put her in harms way. The community is determined to wipe out the wolves and many of the men are only to happy to assist in the annihilation. Trusting humans only results in death and a lot of heartache, his past lays testimony to that and he's got the scars on the outside and inside to prove it.
Karin knows that getting involved with Conner would be detrimental to not just her job, but likely her life. Yet something keeps drawing her to Conner...like a moth to a flame. The question is, just how much is Karin willing to get burned?

Overall, this was a decent book. I'd probably give it 3 1/2 stars if that was an option, but went with 3 since it wasn't. The story deals with Karin who moves to a remote small town after a violent attack to be their new wildlife manager. There she tries to stick up for the wolves that the locals hate but runs into trouble when a hiker is killed. Soon after she meets Malcolm, a wolf shifter who is different than the other sexist men in town, and they are immediately attracted to each other. Together they try to help the accused wolf while figuring out their relationship. The book does have a number of steamy sex scenes as well.

I don't have many negative to say about the book, mainly just that I generally prefer books with female leads that are a bit stronger/tougher than Karin, though she wasn't too bad other than being too naive. I also would have liked to see Karin and Malcolm develop their relationship a bit more before they got together. But I still liked the book even though I don't read many romances that are in a modern setting - I think the paranormal aspect helped there. And although it fits the book, I'm not that fond of the cover since I prefer books with covers that are a bit more subtle than nude people (I wouldn't want to read it in public anyway), the wolf however is nice.

DNF. Just found this very hard to get into. Not sure if it was just that I wasn't in the mood but a lot of things start off wrong in this book with very few possibilities for things to get better without a hell of a lot of angst and I just wasn't interested in going there.
