Silly and slight. Some kids will definitely love the chants and sing-songs; they resemble playground rhymes. I found none worth remembering for me, however.
I have read this little book aloud to both Nevin and Rachel hundreds of times. "you be saucer, i"ll be cup, piggy back, piggy back, pick me up" and "hello, hello, who's calling please?, Mr. Macaroni and a piece of cheese" It doesn;t get better than this!
An older poetry book for young children by Eve Merriam fills you up with silly rhymes, getting ready for bedtime. I know how much fun my young granddaughters have making up songs with ridiculous rhymes, and they will love this book. Merriam is so clever, as shown in the beginning of this poem: “A nanny for a goat, an over for a coat, an under for a wear, a case for a stair.” and it continues on. If you like silly and sing-songy poems, you’ll love this book.
This book consists of poems for children and the ongoing theme is night- and bedtime stories. Some of the rhymes are a bit funny and silly.
This book can be used for all ages of kindergarten children, but since there are a lot of rhymes and repetition in the poems in this book I would recommend to use it for children between 1-3 years old who need a lot of repetition.
Our children are all now adults. This is hands-down our family’s favorite read-in-one-sitting book of poetry for children. It has blessed us with many cherished memories. The poems are playful, catchy, and sweet. I urge you to do whatever you can to get your hands on a copy!
My son Eric memorized, Lunch Box, Lunch Box, what's for lunch... when he was three and used to walk around the house chanting it! So cute! I've purchased this awesome book for many small children and would recommend it to anyone.
These poems are great for introducing poetry to really little kids. I read them to three year olds today and even though some of them aren't as straight forward as some like Jack Prelutsky, the kids could really understand them and get into to the rhythm and rhyme.
My 5 year old got a little bored with this book. Neither of us thought it was a book of poems for little kids, we thought it was a regular children's book. She was more than ready for me to finish reading this book.
This is a juvenile book that just never really captured me. There's nothing wrong with it, but I have never found a place for it with my students or children.
