Battle of the Bulge was Hitlers last ditch effort to win World War II. His plan was to Cut off the American and British armies, and quote "Beat Britain back to the sea like at Dunkirk." Hitler thought that this would shock the western allies so much that they would surrender and then Hitler could beat back the Russians and win World War II. Which is you've taken a look at the world map didn't happen. The Germans lost but no without killing almost 90,000 Americans.
There's not really that much to say other then that. The book is good, 4/5.
As I read through this book, I'd pretty much determined to give it 2 stars. Not that it's a bad book, there's simply too much information in too little space: this division was over here, this brigade was doing this, this regiment was over there, facing this division, and so forth. If I'd read it when it came out, I probably could've pieced it together and would've enjoyed it more, but with my attention span pretty much zero these days, it was just too much. I needed more maps and fewer details on deployments. Still, I thought I had a fair grasp of things by the end. If I could, I'd give it 2.5 stars, as I still don't quite feel that it rates the full 3.
Great summary of the Battle of the Bulge. Read during the 78th anniversary of the battle, the events of those fateful days are worth remembering. Many brave men died on both sides in this final German attempt to change the war's course.
Bought this Life Time series in the early 1980's on WWII, a volume came to the house every 2 or 3 months so I could take my reading. It was very informative and enjoyable read, I still use it for reference.
