152 books145 followersSergio Ramírez Mercado (born August 5, 1942 in Masatepe, Nicaragua) is a Nicaraguan writer and intellectual who served in the leftist Government Junta of National Reconstruction and as Vice President of the country 1985-1990 under the presidency of Daniel Ortega.
Born in Masatepe in 1942, he published his first book, Cuentos, in 1963. He received his law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua of León in 1964, where he obtained the Gold Medal for being the best student.
In 1977 Ramírez became head of the "Group of Twelve", a group of prominent intellectuals, priests, businesspeople, and members of civil society who publicly stated their support for the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) in its struggle to topple the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle. With the triumph of the Revolution in 1979, he became part of the Junta of the Government of National Reconstruction, where he presided over the National Council of Education. He was elected vice-president of Nicaragua in 1984 and was sworn in 1985.

I liked this book, based on real events in Leon, Nicaragua in the 1930's. Always like to read a book about a place I have been or am going to. This one, very much written in a cultural/poetic style, was a bit difficult to follow but described familiar scenes and customs as well as an interesting murder story which I enjoyed.

Típica literatura latinoamérica... sin embargo no me gusto mucho... Es sobre la historia de un envenenamiento múltiple basado en un hecho real. Dale puej.

La historia de los Oliverio Castañeda Palacios el héroe de la novela fue acribillado por la Guardia Nacional en Nicaragua instado por el tirano guatemalteco Jorge Ubico, en 1978 su sobrino Oliverio Castañeda de León sufrió el mismo destino durante el gobierno de Romeo Lucas García por luchar por los derechos humanos en Guatemala y ser el secretario de la Asociación de Estudiantes Universitarios ambos crímenes continúan impunes.

Se ve que el autor hizo un buen trabajo de investigación y en si el libro es bueno, pero me hubiera gustado más ver más desde el punto de vista de Oliverio Castañeda y sus victimas que solo de reportes exteriores.

Es un libro que me ha sorprendido mucho. No espere encontrarme con tremenda historia inspirada en hechos reales. Puse mucha resistencia en un primer intento de lectura, pero estoy convencida que los libros uno los lee en el momento justo la mayoría de veces y me toco en este momento.
Una investigación sin duda bien hecha, unos personajes bien definidos, la descripción de una época en nuestro país tan bien contextualizada que uno se siente dentro de ella, la forma de posicionarnos en la sociedad con sus pensamientos, costumbres, aciertos y defectos es hecha de una manera increíble.
Y que decir de la forma de contar la historia, periodismo, abogados, jueces, política, amores, intrigas, la mesa maldita, el chisme, las suposiciones, muertes, la iglesia, la burguesía y todo dentro de una narrativa excelente.

1933. El año y la ciudad donde nació mi abuela coincidieron con algunos de los sucesos alrededor del caso más famoso de la historia judicial de Nicaragua. En León, a pocas cuadras de donde la recién nacida Azucena Salinas Montoya mamaba teta y se orinaba en pañales, los tribunales juzgaban a un joven dandy de trópico y playboy extranjero de veintitantos que siempre vestía de luto.

Un libro buenísimo y fácil de seguir.

Este libro, un "legal drama" que tipicamente detesto, tiene la mezcla perfecta de humor, cronica, notas juridicas, y declaraciones.
Un extranjero llega a Leon, Nicaragua y de pronto enamora a una familia de la burguesia. Pero, al rato, mueren varias personsas. Fueron envenenadas?
Como una novela historica, me encantaron los detalles de la vida diaria en Leon durante el siglo XX y la etapa de los trenes y barcos y coches de caballo.
