Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.
This is a Modern Library selection by Saxe Commins, who presumably did the translations. It includes 45 stories arranged ¨to give the entire book variety, balance, and sustained interest,"and I have seldom seem a purpose achieved so completely. Commins introduction prepared me for the astonishing range of the works, published and written over a span of only 10 years, bukt the arrangement does intensify the effect. Personally, I enjoyed the ´happy stories´ which seem a literary version of contemporary Impressionist paintings: ¨Madame Tellier´s Excursion,¨ ¨In the Moonlight,¨ and ¨A Country Excursion.¨ His female characters have an unusual range for me, accustomed to English and American Victorian writers. Madame Parisse (¨The Homer who will sing of this Helen, and of the adventures of her Menelaus, must have the soul of a Merimee. And yet, the captains, this lover of that deserted woman, was valiant, bold, beautiful, strong as Achilles, and more cunning than Ulysses. The frugal and industrious farm wives, the giddy (and dangerous) Parisian ´valley girls,´ and thoughtful and hardworking wives. The stories written at the end, like ¨The Horder¨ and ¨The Madman´s Diary¨ are disturbing because of their content, but even more because of their authenticity.
Als je Guy de Maupassant mag geloven was er in de laatste decennia van de 19e eeuw geen enkel huwelijk waarbij de echtgenoten elkaar trouw waren. Elke enigszins gegoede burger, vooral de mannen, hield er een liefje op na. Het is daarom niet zo gek dat het woord maîtresse uit het Frans afkomstig is en nog steeds bestaat, zonder van betekenis veranderd te zijn. Duizend bladzijden met overspelige situaties is wel wat veel van het goede.
