Sheila K. McCullagh had her first work pulished in the 1950s and then went on to write a number of children's books including the Puddle lane and the Buccaneers series.
Tessa Catchamouse is a cute little cat who lives in the garden of a very large house inhabited by a magician.
One day she goes exploring and climbs a huge tree that overlooks the house. Noticing a window open near the branch on which she is sitting, she decides to investigate.
What she does not realise is the consequences of her entering the house.
After some hair-raising adventures she returns home to her mother Pegs, who tells her that she must not go and bother the magician again as, she says, 'Magicians can work magic.'
'I know they cane,' says Tessa and she certainly did!
The delightful illustrations by John Lobban complement the tale very nicely.
As somebody who a) loves cats, and b) is named Tessa, I adored this book as a kid. I have fond memories of my mother reading this to me. This book is my childhood and reading it makes me feel young.
