I found this cookbook, inscribed by Chef David Bidwell, in a used bookstore in charming Fairhope, AL. This is my favorite kind of cookbook, with wonderful stories and history from the Alabama family of writer Truman Capote. All the usual dishes are covered -- including Sook's fruitcake recipe made famous in Capote's story "A Christmas Memory" -- but also included are interesting if not exactly tempting offerings like marinated rattlesnake. "Receipts" are accompanied by beautiful original watercolor illustrations. This collection is a real gem for home cooks and readers with a taste for tales about old Southern cooking.

I love this cookbook. Sook was my favorite character in Capote's Christmas story. My greatnephew and I make the sugar cookies together.
