I'm totally in love with this series from Orca. Educational without being didactic--the explanations are organic to the plot and flow seamlessly in the narrative.
This time, Devin's mom's research into irrigation methods is being trashed--and Devin's mom is being framed for it! Someone is using he security codes to gain access to the lab and the farm to destroy research, experiments, and the plants themselves. Why? Could it have something to do with the special fertilizer they've been given--fertilizer that's doing something to the soil that skews their irrigation results? Devin aims to find out, and clear his mom's name.
Lots of good information about food supply, the environmental value of local and organic produce, and even a bit on genetically-modified crops. This will be a good option for kids in March, when we have our Community Reads Michael Pollan festivities.
The name of the author is Liam o, Donnell and the books title is Food Fight. The book is fiction. The author has been writing comic strips for young readers. The book is realistic fiction.
The book is about a boy named Devin that is in a boring summer camp. His mothers researched for plants get's destroyed and Deving is trying to find the research. The story takes place when Deving sees some teenagers spraying deadly poison to Devin's Mom's plants. The central characters are Devin, his best friend and a person he finds. The characters challenge is to figure out who is destroying the research. The characters don't evolve through the story. The general plot is to skip summer camp. The conflict is that he needs to find out what is destroying the plant so he can skip summer camp. Devin is a pessimist and needs to find a way out of the summer camp but his mom is working there so there is nowhere to go except when he meets his friend, but now he can skip it by helping his mom to find out where her stolen research is.
The story made me feel kind of sad because it is annoying staying at school sort of on summer vacation. The plot was exciting and believable. The characters seemed real because they were humans and this could happen in real life. There we funny bits but not any scary bits of the book. The story made me think about life and how it wold feel to be kind of in a prison when you are suppose to have fun. My favorite part of the book is when Davin sneaks out of the school in the beginning of the book. The book is fun to read but it dosen't really connect with the title when you look at it at first. I would not recommend it to a friend because it wasn't as fun as it sounded like. I would say 9-12 reading age and I rate it 4-10.
Devin should be enjoying his summer holidays. Instead, he is stuck helping his big sister Nadia with her summer daycare program. Their scientist mother happens to be working on a project next door, and they find out someone has been sabotaging their mother’s experiments and even got her fired. Devin, Nadia, and a couple of their misfit friends decide to solve the mystery on their own and save their mother’s reputation.
This book is loaded with education, and as it is part of a series, I feel like this would be a fun addition to any homeschool curriculum!
liked the art and graphics the mystery part of the story is good side messages of how to wash your hands, the evils of GMO, the greatness of local fresh food markets all felt pushed and distracted from the story - wonder how kids react to this
This book is called Food Fight and and it is written by Liam O'Donnell. This is a really interesting book with 3 main characters which I will talk about in the summary of the book.
This book is about a boy names Devin, his sister Nadia, and his mother Elizabeth. In this book Devin's mother works at a cop industry and people are trying to sabotage there work. Her son is at a day care school and he skips it most of the time by hanging out with his cool friend. His mother work get sabotaged and then her boss stops believing her because the last code that was in the computer was her code. Than another sabotage happens at a crop farm where they test it. So they went out to check it out. Then they go in again and Devin was there with this girl who he met when she saved him from them. They the girl found out who they were and they met and they said that some man payed them money to spoil all of your job. Then they get back and find out about a room of 101 and they go into the crop industry and they find the room. There friend came to help them pick the lock. The people who payed the kids to sabotage the farm were workers from the crops industry an than the police came and caught them.
I recommend this book to children from 10-15 its really cool its a comedy and, investigation book.
Food Fight: A Graphic Guide Adventure is an educational book which aims to teach children about the many different facets of the food industry. Devin is stuck at a summer camp with his older sister Nadia while their mother researches irrigation techniques for growing corn. When his mother’s experiments and corps are vandalized at the school Devin’s mom is blamed for the act. Why would Devin’s mom ruin her own hard work? Why are her security codes being used to access the facilities? Devin aims to find out what is really going on and prove his mother is not to blame. Intermixed with the basic plot are subtle educational tidbits about food production including, the value of organic and local vegetables, the process food takes to get to our table, the repercussions of using pesticides and information about genetically modified foods. Although the information is presented with a slight basis the delivery is clear and age appropriate. It’s a tossup on whether this is a winning read. The mystery of who destroyed the food experiments and glossy colorful pictures might keep some kids reading, but the food facts might bore others. If you have a lesson on organic food or want help explaining where food comes from this might be a book worth checking out.
Summary: Brother and sister Devin and Nadia spend the summer at a camp. They find out that there are bad people in the food supply industry trying to spoil all the food. The two characters expose their plot and tell the counselors in efforts to stop them from ruining the nation's food supply.
Review: This book was not that interesting to me. It takes awhile for the problem of the story to appear. Young students might become uninterested easily.
Possible In-class Uses: 1. Students can complete a problem/solution graphic organizer for the book.
2. Students can write a different ending to the story in their journals and share with a neighbor when done.
I just listened/read this on Tumblebooks. This is my first experience with a read-along online graphic novel, and I must say that the voices following along really do enhance the experience. ----------- This mystery threw me for a loop a couple times, as I twice incorrectly guessed about who was sabotaging Devon and Nadia's mother's research and career. I never would have thought that it was Mr. Mitchell using a college student to hack the account out of sheer jealousy of not getting her job. But, that's what it was, and the children figured it all out. ---------- I will definitely be using Tumblebooks more in the future.
Graphic novel with a fast-paced fiction plot that focuses on the non-fiction aspects of health, food, and gardening. Good for Common Core health, nutrition, etc.
Food Fight: A Graphic Guide Adventure by Liam O'donnell a good resource for teaching children about health, eating correctly, food labels, food production, and farming resources
