New Orleans Then and Now
Let the good times roll in New Orleans, home to Mardi Gras madness, the birthplace of jazz, and one of the most visited cities in America. Discover the extraordinary history and beauty of the Crescent City in New Orleans Then and Now in the exciting new second edition of the best-selling title. Explore the LaBranche buildings in the French Quarter and stroll among the splendorous Greek Revival homes in the Garden District. The tracks for horse-drawn streetcars may be gone, but these elegant structures remain largely unchanged. After more than a century, the French Market remains a hub for residents and visitors. Have a beignet and coffee at world-famous Café du Monde — still open 24/7 after all these years. Come on down to the oldest surviving building on Canal Street. Originally built in 1821, this corner shop was home to the United Cigar Store, a barber shop and shoe repair; today it's a Wendy's.

I am a New Orleanian. Interesting photos. However, quite disturbing that the front cover (and page 106) displays the scene of people listening to inflammatory speeches and being incited to lynch Italian men who had been acquitted of murdering Police Chief Hennessey. They were kept in the parish prison on Rampart Street for other reasons. The mob subsequently murdered 11 of the prisoners. It is disturbing on its own but that the author makes no comment about what we are seeing is horrific.
I hope subsequent editions either cite the reference or choose one of several other photos of Canal Street in 1890.

Having just visited NOLA, this was a great book to read for short histories on the city. I LOVE the pictures that compare then to now! The history teacher in me is amazed by this city's rich history, both architecturally as well as personally. Such a neat book and a neat city, can't wait to go back, when I'm not there for work, and explore the sites with my hubby:)

I liked the big pages and that the photos were usually taken from the same vantage point. A map would have been a nice addition.
