Rosie walks in on an armed robbery in her father's convenience store. Who is the masked man? And why does she think she knows him?

Everyone has something to hide.
--------------------------------------------------------------
There's a masked man in the store, and it isn't Halloween.
I duck down again—fast.
I hear someone say, "This is a stickup." It's the guy in the mask. He has a weird voice, like it's not a normal voice. He says, "Is there anyone else in the store?"
That tells me that the masked man hasn't seen me.
"No," my dad says without even a second's hesitation.

Name: Nicholas Loehrke

Book title: Masked!>

Personal Response:
I didn't know this was a multi-perspective book. I’m not a fan of books like these because a lot of them overlap the different characters which makes the book unnecessarily long. This book, in particular, was actually well done and did not drag on.

Plot Summary:
Masked is a multi-perspective book. The book starts off with Rosie and Corey bickering upstairs of Rosie’s dad’s store. Corey is impatiently waiting for Rosie to run away with him. Rosie’s dad calls down Rosie to help with stocking the beans. Reluctantly Rosie comes down to help. Daniel, a kid in Rosie’s grade, is in the store browsing. The little bell on the door opens to show a kid with a mask and a gun standing in the doorway. The masked man yells, “this is a stick up”. Rosie’s dad pulls a gun from under the counter and points it at the masked man. Daniel recognizes the masked man’s shoes as Leons. Rosie and Daniel dated and broke up and are dating again. During the break, Rosie found out she was pregnant but knew her dad would never let her keep the baby without the father being around. In an attempt to keep the baby, Rosie slept with Leon to make it seem like Leon was the father. She planned on telling her dad that the baby is Leon’s, breaking up with Leon, and going away with Corey.

Characterization:
Rosie is a stuck up teenager. She lies about her father being abusive, she lies about who the father of her baby is, and she lies about loving Leon. Pretty trashy overall.

Corey is a jock. He tries to oppress Leon only because Leon is a quiet, unathletic guy. Corey bullies his way out of every situation.

Leon is a quiet and caring highschooler. When his mom was being abused by her husband, Leon stepped up and helped chores. He went as far as to call a shelter and help his mom, himself, and his 2 brothers move somewhere away from his dad.

The book didn’t say much about Daniel. You can assume he’s rather intelligent.

Rosie’s dad is really cheap. If Mr. Krabs was a human, he would be Rosie’s dad. Rosie’s dad cares a lot about his daughter and even more about saving a few dollars.

Recommendation:
I would have thought this was a higher Lexile book because it was in the high school section. Boy was I wrong. Masked!>is a very easy to understand book with a decent plot. I would recommend this to fifth to eighth graders looking for an easy action book.

Personal Response

I really enjoyed this book. It was very intense, and I never wanted to stop reading it. As the majority of the book was a store getting robbed, it seemed as if much more had actually happened. I give this book four out of five stars, and will be sure to share it with my friends.

Plot/Summary
At first, the book started as another realistic teenage life. Rosie worked for her dad as a cashier at his store. Sometimes Rosie would give her friends some free candy from the store, which she wasn't supposed to do. Other than that, Rosie was a very good kid. She was a good student, and helped out around the house since she did not have a mom anymore. Her mom died in a car crash when she was 5. Rosie was now 16, and was always at work on time. Usually her father is around when she is working, but he often leaves to run errands and does inventory in the store. As he left out the back, a masked man had entered the store. Rosie was immediately frieghtened, and was not sure what to do. The masked man pulled out a gun, and demanded for her not to move. As the disguised man talked, you could tell he was hiding his voice as well. Rosie knew this meant that the man was a local , and was afraid of being revealed. Rosie's father came in the back as usual. He sees Rosie being held at gunpoint and immediately offers and demands the man to take money and get out. He does not know how to respond, because the money is not what he is after. He doesn't deny the money, but as soon as he has the bag full of money he doesn't quite move. He says "She's coming with me." Rosie's father begs for him to take anything besides his daughter. He pleads and pleads, and then suddenly another customer comes in. It is Corey. Corey was Rosie's boyfriend for almost 3 years. Corey cheated on Rosie, but Rosie still loved him very much. The masked man begins screaming, because of his hatred for Corey. By his voice, Rosie realized that it was Leon, and tore the mask off of his face. During this, Rosie's father had grabbed the gun hidden under the counter, and had it pointed towards Leon. Leon had hated how Corey had treated Rosie so terribly. Rosie had been yelling at both of the boys, and had accidentally let it slip that she was pregnant. She told Leon that it was his baby, because they had sex once. She lied to Leon, so that she would not be a single mother. Corey was the actual father, but was so mad at Rosie for doing that with Leon, that he turned and walked out of the store. Leon said this is how Corey always treats her. Leon shot him in the back twice. Rosie's father then called the cops, as Rosie ripped the gun out of Leon's hands. Rosie's father then tackled Leon and held him down as the cops arrived. They had called the ambulances immediately and tried to save Corey. Corey couldn't be saved, and Rosie's heart was broken. She was now a mother with no one to help her besides her father.

Characterization

Rosie- Rosie was a hard worker that would lie to get her way. She does not care about others. She also exaggerates situations to get attention from others.

Leon- Leon was crazy. He robbed a store, all because things did not go his way. He also murdered one of his classmates because of a girl.

Rosie's Father- Rosie's father was a businessman, that cared a lot for his daughter. She was the only woman he had left in his life because his wife died in a car crash.

Review and Recommendations
I gave this book a four out of five stars. It kept me on the edge, always wanting to read more. It painted a very good picture of an armed robbery in my mind. I would recommend this book to boys and girls over the age of 16. Some of the content and violence is not appropriate for younger kids, but teenagers love this content. If I could read more books like this I would in an instant. I am glad that I found this book, and will be sure to show it to my friends.

Personal Response
I think this was a pretty good book. It dealt with real-life situations such as crime and murder. The characters were always robbing stores and then their own store got robbed. It really surprised me to see how much the characters changed throughout the story.

Plot Summary
In Masked there are these characters by the name of Daniel and Rosie. They are the main characters. Daniel is a criminal and likes to rob convenience stores for money. Daniels dad also owns a convenience store and that also got robbed just so Daniel could have enough money for himself. Eventually, he and his girlfriend got caught robbing another store across town. Finally Daniel and his girlfriend were under arrest and placed in jail.

Characterization
At the beginning of the book, Daniel seemed to act like a normal teen would. Later on in the story, he really changed into a problem child. His girlfriend, on the other hand, is super sweet. Finally, the only reason she got in trouble was because she was along for the robbery.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to anyone between the age of ten to twenty. This book reminds me of a CSI movie. I am definitely going to read more books by this author in the future.

This is a story about a girl named Rosie. Her boyfriend, Corey , breaks up with her and then she discovers she is pregnant. She is afraid that her dad won't let her keep the baby if its father isn't around. She knows this other guy ,Leon, really likes her, so she makes up lies about her dad so he wants to protect her. She sleeps with him and then tells him she is pregnant. Then he finds out she has lied and doesn't really care about him. Leon goes a little crazy and shoots the real baby's father. Life is never the same after that.

The characters in this book are Rosie Mirelli. She gets pregnant by a guy who doesn't want to be tied down to a kid. Leon is the boy she tricks into thinking that he is the baby's father. Leon worships Rosie and goes a little crazy when he realizes he was used by Rosie. Corey was Rosie's boyfriend who got her pregnant and then left her all alone.

This story takes place in a city somewhere in America. The book doesn't give specifics about the town, but I think it is in a smaller city. This story takes place in today's world, because the problems the kids in the story face are the ones we face today in our lives.

I recommend this story to high school students. I think some middle school students would be old enough to read it but not all. This was a very good book. I really didn't know how it was going to end.

Personal Response:
The book I read was Masked. I liked this book because it showed what everybody was thinking in the robbery. I liked that the book kept me into the book. It was very interesting to think that their brothers was n the store when the other brother is upstairs both planning to take her away.
Plot:
This book took place in a convenience store. The father owner the convenience store with his daughter Rosie. Rosie was playing o running away with a guy and never see his dad aging. Then she was caught in the middle of a robbery. Rosie doesn't know that The masked man thinks Rosie loves him so he wants to rob the store and run away with her but she did not know that. She can recognize the voice but doesn't know who he was. This all ends up with one one that Rosie was going to run away from come down to the store and yells at her and then really there is a guy masked and it turns out to be his brother.

I liked this book a lot because of the plot and setting. The whole book was based all in a small town convenience store but that did not limit it at all. It stayed in first person point of view but jumped from person to person to get there own perspective on what was happening during an armed robbery. I found the writing style unique and I liked it.

The daughter of the guy who owns the store, Rosie, got herself in a lot of trouble when she decided to sneak around with two guys behind her dads back. Rosie has a negative personality about her dad trying to help her which causes many problems.

The masked man thinks Rosie loves him so he wants to rob the store and run away with her but she did not know about his plan because she had already made plans to run away with another guy. The robber had a personality like a leader but he did not try to do the right thing.

Daniel, an innocent bystander, had a calm personality throughout the whole book and did not panic when he saw the masked robber.

Overall I recommend this book to ages 12-18 because its a good book thats easy to comprehend. Never really had a dull moment and was very good.

Book review

I have read a book called ”Masked” i picked this books because it was not so thick, but it still looked like it would be a good book. This book is a thriller/drama. i think this book is for younger people that have some difficulties with reading english books. The book had a text that was easy to read and the grammar was easy. I don’t think that this book was that good i am more into action then thriller/drama.

Personal Response: I really liked this book, because it kept me reading throughout the book. I also really liked the book, because there was a good plot twist at the end instead of the same boring ending. The book should have added more details, which I think would have made the book better. Also, the book should have had more characters and action going on to make it more interesting. Other than that, it was a pretty good book.
Plot: It started when Daniel wanted to spend some money at a convenience store. While he was looking around, Rosie went into the store to see what her farther needed. Her father owned the convenience store. A guy in a mask stuck up the store and demanded all the cash in the register. The guy grabbed Rosie and held a gun to her head. Then the owner started to grab all the money from the register and put it in a bag. He was using a weird accent, so he did not give out who he was. After a couple of minutes, the guy in the mask could not keep his accent going and they knew who he was. They were surprised by who it was. After the guy got all the money, he demanded Rosie go with him. He warned the owner not to set off the alarm. They listened closely and Daniel recognized the voice, which was his neighbor. His neighbor's name was Leon. They called the police and Leon got the help he needed and everyone was safe.
Characterization: Daniel was the main character. He was in the book throughout the whole book. He never really changed, even when the store got held up. Rosie was the owner of the store's daughter and she was portrayed as a nice and smart high school girl. She was not loved by her father. Leon was Daniel's neighbor who robbed the store. He was the last person they expected to stick up the store. He was a nice guy who helped out Daniel's mother.
Recommendation: I recommend this book to any male or female who likes plot twists, because this book contained many plot twists. I recommend this book to males and females age 12-16 because it was easy to read.

The story "Masked" is a Juvenile fiction book. The setting is inside of an convience store. This story begins with a boy name Daniel entering a convenience store on a secret mission. In the beginning everything was going as planned Daniel was hoping not to run into someone he knows because it would ruin the whole mission. It was supposed to be an easy getaway but when his girlfriend shows up, the next person through the door is wearing a mask and holding a gun...

This book for me was interesting because it kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next and if the mission was to go get complicated because of the unexpected surprise. In the beginning I thought the story was just going to be about a robbery gone wrong but then the author gave me a big turn around. The author kept me interested by providing with different details about the store mission little by little making want to continue reading to find out what happens next. If the author Norah McClintock made a series to this book I would be eager to read it more and more.

Welcome to a thin intense book base on three point of views. Follow the story of a triangle of antiquates. The book is fast passed and intense. This is one of those books that shows how our words and actions depict what will happen in our lives. (The book focuses more effect rather than the cause of the story.) The one thing that actually scared me was Rosie's mentality/immaturity. In this knot of moving pieces I did like the comedy stuck in there. The flow was easy to follow and the book is intense all the way to the end.

Quick read about a convenience store robbery told from the point of view of the different characters involved. Interesting plot but not a lot of character development. The ending seemed abrupt. It only took an hour or so to read.

This was the first hi-lo book I’ve read, and I can appreciate it for what it is in some ways. The characterization is all spelled out and it is a very fast read. It’d be great if other authors would tap into this to give us better stories for kids who need the scaffolding.

Personal response: I enjoyed this book it had this awesome concept where every chapter you would be in somebody else's thoughts. This book had a lot of twist and turns in it which got my brain jumbled. Overall the book gets better as it all unfolds. I didn't really like one of the characters, Rosie because she was stuck up and rude always blaming others and never took blame towards her own action. This book was really sad though because at the end of the book the people in the store find out who the robber is and he's name is Leon. Leon dated Rosie and loved her but Rosie didn't like him cause he was crazy and she got pregnant by somebody else who was in the store and they were complaining who the father was it was between this dude named Cory(Rosie’s boyfriend). At first both of them were arguing whose the real dad and Cory thought he was in the beginning but at the end of the discussion Cory thinks Rosie is lying and that she got pregnant by Leon, so now Cory wants no part with the kid so he left the city and switched schools. At the end, the book hints Rosie had to abort her kid because it would have grown up without a father. I loved this book because it was a small easy read and it had a great story to it.

Plot: The book was about this small family owned business that got robbed by this guy named Leon who dated the owner's daughter Rosie. Before all this they broke up and Rosie got a new boyfriend. Leon’s father abused his family and him until his father died in a drunk driving accident. Leon picked up the slack around the house like helping his mother and cleaning the house and watching out for his siblings. Leon robbed the store to get money so he can get it to his mother because he is poor.

Recommended: I recommend this book to 16 to 20 year olds, because it's a mature book filled with drama that a 16 or older person would enjoy. And also it would relate to 16 year olds because the characters are teenagers and are in high school. Also adults would enjoy this book because it's mature enough and it deals with real adult situations. I recommend this book to people who want to read a short thrilling drama book.

Character analysis: Leon is one of the main characters which he played one of the main roles being the robber of the store. Leon was a heartbroken kid who lost his girlfriend, and his dad abused his family and later died in a car crash, with now having one parent he helped around the house and protected his mother and siblings. Rosie was another character which was the main character, who was a teenager who was a preppy girl. Rosie dated Leon at one point but then she broke up with him and dated Cory who was a cocky ignorant dude. Rosie was loved by a lot of people but she really didn't care that much for anybody else, just living life like a typical teenager.

The actions in a convenience store one afternoon change the lives of a small cast of characters. MASKED may be just over 100 pages, but the plot still takes many exciting twists and turns.

Daniel's real reason for stopping by has nothing to do with the beverages, snacks, and wrestling magazines that he places on the check-out counter. He is out to retrieve information for another businessman interested in obtaining the property where the convenience store is located. His request to use the restroom is just an excuse to get a peek at the company files.

As Daniel begins his undercover work, he hears the store owner call upstairs to someone named Rosie. Assuming that someone is the owner's wife, Daniel is surprised to see it is actually a girl his age - and he realizes that he knows her.

Rosie reluctantly enters through the backroom and seems irritated to have been called on to perform some petty task by her store-owner father. She has her own agenda, which involves the young man waiting impatiently upstairs. She was hoping not to have to deal with any store business ever again after today.

When a masked man holding a gun enters the picture, everyone is taken completely by surprise. He seems serious but not particularly competent in his role as criminal. Gathering all the available cash doesn't seem to be his main motivation.

Readers are in for some surprises as all the plot threads are pulled together. MASKED is loaded with the unexpected, making it a good book for teens and especially reluctant readers.

Excerpt:

...I feel her tremble, and I'm sorry about that. I'm sorry I have to scare her. But there's no other way. I watch the old man lower his hands to the cash cash register. I wonder how much money is in there...

Masked for me was envisioning with many unexpected turn of events. Norah McClintock has done a few Orca books as well as her popular novels published by Scholastic Canada. This is my second book by McClintock and although this one is placed on the pile for reluctant readers, I can't help but recommended this book to any YA books fanatic.

When I read, I like the feeling that I'm right by the characters side, (depending on who was telling the story from their point f view; Daniel, Rosie, or the masked man) feeling how they feel, thinking the way they think...it's real, so true.

Rosie, the daughter of the man whose store is getting robbed finds herself in a very sticky situation...maybe even more than Daniel, the boy who walks through the doors hoping for a grab and go rather than a stick up by a masked man. Corey (Rosie's boyfriend) who's...

Daniel has a secret and not altogether ethical task to complete when he enters a convenience store. While he is snapping pictures of documents from a cabinet in a dirty old storeroom, a masked man with a gun enters the store. We think he’s there just to rob the owner and take off with the cash. But when he demands that he take the owner’s daughter with him, the complications begin.

What if Rosie’s boyfriend Corey, who is waiting to run away with her, walks through the door? How can Daniel get out? Is Rosie’s dad really the beast she describes? Or is his plea not to hurt his daughter more true to his character?

High school housekeeping: Masked is a quick read for students working on their reading skills. The Lexile level is 650 (about grade 5). Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the people in the convenience store during the robbery—Daniel, Rosie and the Masked Man. It’s fun to see the story get stranger and stranger as the characters reveal their motivations for what they are doing. This is a robbery going wrong, but certainly not your typical one.

I decided to rad this book because i always love crime novels and this was the perfect oportinity. I enjoyed the climax and the resolution of this book, not only because i liked how it was developed but also because of the amazing vocabulary they use. The thing i most enjoyed is that all chapters live you with intrigue because when the conflict is finishing they change of chapter in this book every chapter is a different character, different point of view, which in my opinion creates a lot of tension and gives the reader the desire to continue reading.

I didn’t enjoyed the beginning and the way the author presents the characters and the setting, i have to admit that is not so easy as it sounds to create characters protagonist and antagonist, but in my personal opinion i would love that instead of knew what their position in the novel is I will love to know their story, why they are there and what they are doing.

The kids and fanatics like my who love reading crime and punishment books/novels or someone who love tension, drama and action novels/books.

The themes in this book is deseption because of all the lies they said, which in my opinion are absolutely needed to create these type of novels.

These type of short-story fast books are intreging, but because of the shortness of the story, the authour does not go into too much detail. Wheather this is the book for you depends on if you like quick books to read, or if you'd like longer, desciriptive or in depth type of books.

This book was a fast paced book, and I enjoyed it, but to me it seemes to end up being about social things.(spoiler) Who's dating who, who got who pregnate -which is in the book, so this is for more mature audiences.

Quick read: told from 3 different perspectives of a girl, Rosie, a boy, Daniel, and the masked man who holding up the corner store.
Nothing special about this story that really jumps out or makes it notable. The best part of the book is the multi-perspective of the situation as each of the characters react.

This book was very interesting. I was quite surprised that Leon (the masked man) had a few chapters from his own viewpoint. It's a sad ending, I felt terrible for Leon and I felt he was wronged. Rosie basically ruined his life and he's the one who ends up in prison.. It just seemed so unfair. But other than that it was a real page turner.
