Few other states in our union have the magnificent topography of the Centennial State. This unique Colorado landscape is beautifully represented in the illustrations of Helle Urban, as the rhyming verse and expository text of Louise Whitney defines those images and expands our understanding of the Rockies, Blue spruces, Springs, and Yucca plants that paint this land. An excellent addition to our state alphabet book series, C is for Centennial entertains as it educates and its multi-tiered format makes it accessible for readers of all ages and at all elevations.
I always enjoy these alphabet state books. We read this in preparation for our trip to Colorado this summer. It has lots of interesting facts and stories.
I'm not sure why I picked this book up other than I wanted to read something by a Colorado author for the library summer reading program. While it has some of the characteristics of a real "picture book" with only a few words for small children to read, pictures and the alphabet, it is more than that. On each page there are things about Colorado that older students and even adults would enjoy. Things like the reason for the colors in the state flag, that the largest silver nugget ever found was found in Aspen (not Leadville) and it was the size of a car, and the reason it is known as the Centennial State (in case you didn't know).
It made me realize there are places I still haven't seen in my state and I should go see them. *Great Sand Dunes *Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument *Hovenweep National Monument *Ouray along the Million Dollar Highway - US 550 *Molly Brown house and other of the "mansions" *ProRodeo Hall of Fam *Royal Gorge *Golden State Park *St. Mary's Glacier
We picked this up as a short reading book for our 4 year old daughter. We loved the alphabet and the pictures. I like the sides have trivia and information for adults.
This isn't a book to use with young children. Maybe older kids? However, if I were to use this in a Colorado classroom, I'd have the kids make their own book. Working in groups, the kids could brainstorm possibilities for each letter, thus sharing ideas and learning from each other. From there ...
I didn't care for the art. I just convinced myself that I don't need to keep this book.
This book is filled with information about Colorado. It is well-suited to intermediate grade students. The alphabet format assists with the recall of information. Beautiful illustrations.
