I just got the book and I've already learned something disturbing! When the doctor told me I had oxalate stones, he said the most important thing I could do was drink more water. He also gave me a list of foods that are high in oxalates, and told me I needed to try and reduce my oxalate intake to 40-50 mg per day. Since anything chocolate is my favorite kind of desert, of course it's on the list. So I baked a pumpkin pie for desert instead. Turns out pumpkin are high in oxalates, too! It was missing from my doctor's list. So now I'm going to finish the book.
My doctor hit all the hot spots - hydration, salt, protein, calcium and oxalates, and he told me lemon juice and magnesium are stone inhibitors, but I'm still glad I took the time to read this book. People who understand how stones are formed have a better chance of avoiding more stone episodes. I want to be one of those people.
This was a very frustrating read. Not the book its self, but the fact that my urologist and nephrologist have never told me most of this information. I read this book because after 5 years of making stone's and having 2 ESWL and 2 stent surgeries, I've never been told anything more than I have calcium oxalate stones. Not how to stop them from recurring. So I've had to take it upon myself to do some research. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that while it tells you what to avoid (which is apparently EVERYTHING 'healthy' that I've been eating!) it doesn't really list what foods you should be eating. There are a few 'good day' vs. 'bad day' menus, but nothing all encompassing. It would have been helpful. Otherwise, a nice easy read that was very informative.
For those of you that know me, clearly I am dealing with something that I am looking to control. This book answered some questions I had, as well as informed me surrounding questions to be getting answered from doctors and nurses. I rate this book highly for providing some needed context.
Very insightful and helped a layperson learn a lot about kidney stones and their causes and preventative measures in very simple terms. Highly recommended for anyone struggling with this problem.
I hate that I needed to read this. It was super helpful though and gave great insight as to why people make kidney stones, how to avoid them, what to expect with surgeries/procedures/pain, and recipes for kidney health! Kidney stones suck!
While there might be some decent medical information in the book about preventing kidney stones, the author goes on and on about how women get them because we strict fluid intake due to not wanting to use the bathroom because it's "unlady like."
