When I was in USA, my friend gave me this book because I said I had never read Mother Goose. The book is colorful with neat illustrations and has no story but rhymes. I'd love to read it to my baby some day, but I might skip some parts that sing about a baby falling down and a boy breaking his crown. Might be a little shocking to babies.

The nursery rhymes in this book are classics. The illustrations are charming and old-fashioned but they are also subdued and I wish the colors were more vibrant. Many of the lullabies are great such as Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, Ring Around the Rosies, Five Toes, and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. However, some nursery rhymes are actually disturbing such as Hush-A-Bye; this entire nursery rhyme is about a wind knocking the baby out of her cradle. I do not know about reading those ones to your child but overall I like this book.

Fisher, Blanche. My First Real Mother Goose. New York: Scholastic, 2000.

Who would have thought one of the most prominent figures in children’s literature would be an imaginary author. In this board book, the cherished Mother Goose tells some of her most well renowned nursery rhymes such as Hush-A-Bye, Jack, and Rain. Each story is printed on one side with an image to accompany it on the opposite, guiding comprehension. Because the rhymes are so short in length, the images are effective in depicting the main action of the scene. For example, in the Hush-A-Bye baby rhyme, the word “bough” may be confusing to a child, but make sense when she sees the image of a child’s cradle on a tree branch. Moreover, the implementation of end rhyme makes for a fun reading experiences young readers will surely enjoy. While some may find some of the topics concerning if looked into deeply, such as encouraging a boy to jump through a flame, I think negative remarks would be far stretched. These timeless rhymes are truly unforgettable, making it an enjoyable experience for new readers and well-versed rhymers alike.

I went on an insane B&N shopping spree for my daughter's birthday/Christmas. One of the things I hadn't gotten so far was a collection of nursery rhymes. They were a large part of my childhood; a part that I want to pass on to her. (My grandparents had a couple of really nice nursery rhyme books - like, printed and illustrated back in the '40s or '50s. I miss those books...)

This...was not an incredibly impressive collection.

The illustrations are nice, but the book only contains rhymes that will fit on a single, board book page. And while there are plenty of recognizable rhymes, I was hoping for something a bit more than "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "Jack and Jill". I like my nursery rhymes long, and obscure.

That's right. I'm a nursery rhyme hipster. I'll own to it.
