Nancy, a cheerleader for Tarenton High, faces her classmate's disapproval when she falls in love with Ben, a star player on the basketball team of their archrivals
Caroline Cooney knew in sixth grade that she wanted to be a writer when "the best teacher I ever had in my life" made writing her main focus. "He used to rip off covers from The New Yorker and pass them around and make us write a short story on whichever cover we got. I started writing then and never stopped!" When her children were young, Caroline started writing books for young people -- with remarkable results. She began to sell stories to Seventeen magazine and soon after began writing books. Suspense novels are her favorites to read and write. "In a suspense novel, you can count on action." To keep her stories realistic, Caroline visits many schools outside of her area, learning more about teenagers all the time. She often organizes what she calls a "plotting game," in which students work together to create plots for stories. Caroline lives in Westbrook, Connecticut and when she's not writing she volunteers at a hospital, plays piano for the school musicals and daydreams! - Scholastic.com
I remember when I stole this series from my friend’s big sister and my mom caught me reading it and was like, Well that’s it. My daughter is officially a delinquent. There’s no turning back from this evil path once exposed to such corrupting material. Can you imagine if she had to raise a child in today’s era of the Interwebs and social??!
I was obsessed with this series as a tween. Reading as an adult, however...yikes. So toxic.
The plot of this one finds cheerleader Nancy dating a basketball player from a rival school. Which turns THE WHOLE ENTIRE SCHOOL AGAINST HER. Even adults. It's so stupid. Like, literally, no one would care beyond some teasing. But the characters in this book freeze her out and literally express HATRED for her. They call her traitor. They won't speak to her or look at her. It's just mind-numbingly stupid.
The B-plot is about an unknown vandal who keeps jumping up and putting shoe prints on the school walls. Apparently, this is a HUGE deal because they have to repaint the halls everyday because of the shoe prints? What, is this kid walking in tar first? It's so dumb. Pres and his girlfriend Kerry are blamed for it and Pres nearly gets kicked off the squad. (Oh, by the way, did you know that Kerry is "chubby"? The author only mentions it everytime Kerry is mentioned.) Kerry also has her own little plot in which Pres's mother hates her for some reason...and buys Pres a sweater in Scotland just like the one she knows Kerry is knitting for him. Even the adults in this one are petty losers.
None of these characters are likable. Especially our ~golden girl heroine~ Mary Ellen. She's a gold digging, arrogant, self-centered bitch who uses everyone. How are we supposed to like her when she's always being snide or using her latest-boyfriend-of-the-week in an attempt to social climb (when she's not admiring herself in the mirror, that is)? She's supposed to be the antithesis of the evil, dark haired Vanessa, but really they're just 2 sides of the same coin.
I can't find any sympathy for Olivia. I know I'm supposed to because of her overbearing mother, but Olivia is cold and awful. Walt has no personality. Pres is an arrogant clown. All of the girls are always falling for boys who treat them like a possession and change their identity for the boy. I know this was written in the 80s, but yikes.
I don't know whether I should pause the series or continue hate-reading...
So, Mary Ellen has chosen a new victim for her affections, someone with money and prestige, and poor Patrick is left at the roadside again. Nancy starts dating the captain of an opposing team, and it really doesn't go well, as everyone labels her a traitor and hi. A god. Olivia does some gymnastics that her mother disapproves of. Près is blamed for putting black marks on walls around the school, but it turns out to be someone else. Kerry knits a sweater for Pres, that his mother knows about, and his mother gets an identical one and gives it to him first. Angie I still with Marc.

Typical book in the series. Good read if you like books about high school cheerleading and romance. Some of the books in this series are better than others.
