April 2013: Reread for book club. Enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

Sept 2010: This was a really fun read. The first half felt more light-hearted, almost silly. The second half got deeper and ended up being a really sweet story. I thought the book would be told mainly from Brighton's POV, but it really ended up being Dani (Danielle's) story. I liked the growth she went through and enjoyed her character. It was a fun read, cute cover and one I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a fun uplifting read, with a little romance. I thought the cover was super cute also. I look forward to reading Anderson's other book "Divinely Designed" soon.

Brighton Andrews has no idea what he is in for when he agrees to a "laundry bet" with his roommates. Why not agree to the bet? It means he'll finally have a reason to ask out Katherine, the cute girl he's seen at the library. All he has to do is date 2 of her roommates at the same time and he's free from laundry for a month. How hard can it be?

Luck of the Draw is a delightful book. This fast paced, humorous story is sure to please readers who enjoy a good clean uplifting story. The combination of humor, romance and a meddling grandmother make this a book worth taking the time to read.

Loved it! At first I didn't think I would enjoy the book that much. But it just became better and better. The last half of the book I really enjoyed. A great recommendation from "Happily Ever After" book group! Thanks again!

While reading this again, I wondered HOW in the world the three girls could really be dumb enough not to realize what Brighton/Andy/Jeff was doing!! And how he could be dumb enough not to realize they are girls, and girls talk, and they would all somehow NOT find out. But then I realized that he didn't expect to ever see any of them again after two dates each, so really, what did he have to lose? I did enjoy the book once again this time around. Fun, clean chick-lit!

(8/10)I really like the writing style of Ms. Anderson. The story flows and engages. This book is a lot of fun and the characters are very entertaining.

Brighton Andrews makes a laundry bet with a roommate--he must ask a girl and two of her roommates out on two dates without any of them knowing that he's dating them all. If he succeeds, his laundry will be done for a month. He asks a girl from the library out and then literally runs into her roommate, who shoots him down.

Funny, tender, entertaining, romantic--Luck of the Draw has it all.

Stubborn Dani Carlson thinks she has the world figured out. The child of wealthy, absent parents, she grows up despising money and vowing to live simply and therefore happily. But when a young co-ed throws her plans for a loop she learns truly living may require compromise.

Meanwhile Brighton Anderson is just trying to get to med school without too many disruptions. But his relentless roommates and their silly laundry bet is just around the corner. And this time it's Brighton's turn. His challenge: Take three roommates on two dates each without them discovering his scheme. He knows it's immature, but with a big break from his laundry on the line he can't pass it up.

Brighton meet Dani... And Katherine... And Sandy...

Brighton meet trouble.

This is an entertaining romantic comedy. Her characters are so well-developed you can't help but want to hug them at times and slap them at others.

Her pace makes the novel hard to put down and even harder to forget. It's a lesson in service, generosity, and making difficult changes for those you love.

I finally got my hands on this book! :)
I enjoyed it so much that I decided to wait until tomorrow to do my math homework.
Anyway,I love this book. I really enjoyed the college setting, as that is where I am now.
The characters were enjoyable and the plot was wonderful. As an added bonus, the cover was really cute.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes to read happy, enjoyable books.

The first thing I love about Luck of the Draw is the cover. It reminds me of modern day, modest Charlie's Angels. The second thing I love is the author. I stopped by her table at authorpalooza two weeks ago but didn't have much time to chat. So, I was thrilled when she and her publicist sent me a copy of her book for review. Since finishing the book I have found out what an amazing person Racheal is. She's down to earth, humble, and kind.

I turned the last page on Luck of The Draw three days ago and still have not been able to enjoy anything else I've picked up quite as much. It has an underlying message and good feeling that will slowly seep in and wrap around you as you read. The plot starts out light and funny as a bet is made that involves laundry and girls. Brighton Andrews has his hands full tyring to ask three girls out at the same time without them finding out they are dating the same person. His life gets even more complicated (and hilarious) when he accidentally plows Dani, one of the roomates, and finds out how feisty and stubborn a woman can be. The bet may not be as easy to win as everything else for Brighton...but he is bound and determined to win.

The plot to Luck of The Draw has lots of surprises, fun dialogue and lessons of life. What impacted me the most was seeing how Dani sticks to her guns and lives as she believes best is in spite of her superficial parents. I also enjoyed how Brighton matures and changes after his laundry bet goes awry. Both main characters most learn to trust in something outside of themselves and follow their dreams wherever they may lead.

Rachael Renee Anderson has created a parable for our time and a fun read that will take you back to your college days. The characters will melt your heart and the message will bring you to tears. Five stars and a thank you for a squeaky clean read. This is one I will pass on to my daughters. I ordered her other book Divinely Designed and am excited to read more from Rachael.

This author is so fun to read! This book caught me off guard. I would give the first half of the book 5 stars and the second half 4. I'm a little confused about this book. The first half of the book was a fun romantic type quality. I really enjoyed it and loved how the story was playing out. Then, all of a sudden the whole mood of the book switches and it starts to have some sad serious elements. I just didn't love where it turned. I found it confusing. I think this author should of wrote two different books and I think each one would of been good.

Over-all I think this author is great and I look forward to the next book!

This book was SO much fun.
I loved that I felt confident that the author would give me the ending I wanted, but at the same time, I couldn't put it down. There were a lot of unexpected twists and turns, and I love love stories where the characters do a lot of growth on their own as well. She created fun, believable relationships with Dani (the MC) and her friends, family, Nana, and the boy...

Anderson also wrote from a boy's perspective in a fabulous way, and I loved how smoothly the points of view switched, just enough to keep me guessing and turning pages.

Way fun. Great, deep, love story. Would totally recommend :D

If you want a quick, enjoyable read this is it. Overall it was enjoyable, but towards the end of the book Dani's character really started to bug me. She ended up sounding like an ungrateful brat that would only be happy living in her perfect world. I guess that was me at one point in my life, but with age and experience we get over those idealistic behaviors and start enjoying what life really has to offer. I liked this book enough to give it three starts and finish it.

I loved this story (thanks for writing it, Rachael)! It was cute, but had depth and things progressed in a realistic way. Brighton takes a dare to date three roomates at the same time, twice each, within a month. One he is already aquainted with and thinks he likes her, but that's before he meets one of the other roomates, Dani. However, Dani doesn't want anything to do with him. Content: clean.

What a fun read. I liked it from start to finish! What a fun concept. A guy gets bet that he can't go on two dates with each of 3 girls who are roommates---without them knowing they are dating the same guy. He, of course, finds himself really liking one of the three. But how do you explain to a girl that you were dating her friends at the same time & on a bet, no less?

I think this is written really for a younger audience (younger than me anyway). I enjoyed it for the light, fun read that it was. Probably shouldn't look any deeper than that as it really isn't a deep book but there was a deeper theme within it. Is having or not having money a good or bad thing? Dani believes money is a bad thing because her parents put prestige and wealth before relationships. Her mother thinks it is a good thing for that very same reason. Dani's relationship with her parents is rather sad but her relationship with her grandmother is very sweet. Dani is stubborn. Forgiving is hard for her and therefore she is willing to let her preconceived ideas about what will bring happiness make her miss true happiness in life. In truth she didn't have the maturity to foresee that her beliefs about money weren't necessarily accurate.
Brighton was pretty scummy to accept the bet though I don't think he felt it would possibly cause harm. It was slimy how he worked for the info he needed to win the bet. But he was charming and his banter with Dani was fun. I was glad to see him find the error in his choices.

The ending was pretty much a fairy tale. The fairy tale ending we would all like to have in life but few do. She wants to be able to help people and doesn't want a workaholic husband. She falls in love with the person that could help make the first happen but fears the workaholic part is inevitable. Her life circumstances drop the ability to have both those things in her lap. But most of us don't get everything we want. We usually have to sacrifice something we want for something we want more. Dani seems to get it all.

So is there another book? Because we didn't get to know what was in Nana's letter to Brighton. And his sister's problems didn't get resolved. Will Dani always have a snotty sister in law?

No sex, langauge, violence.

Luck of The Draw is a fun, quick, clean romantic read that reminded me of college days and that fun stage in life when you're trying to discover what you want to do in life. The story begins when Brighton's college roommates make a bet- he has to date, or at least twice, 3 college roommates. Not one to turn down a challenge, especially if that means he doesn't have to do laundry for month, Brighton accepts.

What I enjoyed about this challenge, was getting to know Dani, the one girl that finally captures Brighton's heart and becomes his greatest challenge. Dani is a very independent women, who doesn't care much for dating, is studying to become a teacher, and teaches snowboarding lessons. Dani is the only child of well to do parents, and it's her often absent surgeon father and her vain mother, that turn Dani off from any further interest in Brighton, as he's studying to be a doctor. It's her parent's love of money and never being around that have made her dislike anyone who has a lot of money and will be in a profession that will make a lot of money, as she's seen what money can do to people. What I liked about Brighton's character is he doesn't take no for an answer. As stubborn as Dani is, she won't admit she likes him.

While I enjoyed Brighton and Dani's snark and sarcasm with each other, my favorite character in this clean, cut, cute romance is Dani's Grandmother Rose. She's the one person who has kept Dani grounded, giving her stability and the one who helped both Dani and Brighton get together. While some of the story is predictable, other parts of the story completely surprised me, like Rose playing a bigger part in Brighton and Dani's story towards the end. I'm keeping this spoiler free.

Brighton matures a lot through the story and I liked how never gives up on the girl he loves, despite making a stupid bet and possibly losing her forever. I liked Dani's roommates realistic reactions to finding out about the bet, as Brighton dated them all, but nothing serious like Dani's date. Dani is someone that I found really fun and someone I'd love to hang out with. I liked that in wanting to make a difference in someone else's life, she became a teacher. Her character growth came in the form of getting over her fears of love and realizing that love is about letting go, having a faith, and enjoying the unpredictable ride.

First off I have to put this out there. I'm not a religious person and mostly consider myself Agnostic. It's not that I don't believe, it's just I have a lot of reservations. It threw me off a little that the Mormon church was mentioned a lot. Though I don't think it took away from the story, if anything it brought a whole new perspective. I know I have my own issues and I don't expect anyone to have the same hang ups as me and I loved the fact that Dani and Brighton were able to fall back on religion when they were looking for answers. It wasn't the main focus of the book, just mostly undertones. It was a really cute, quick read. Brighton took a laundry bet from his roomates that he couldn't date three roomates at the same time. Determined to do it and already having someone he was interested to meet, he took the bet. Katherine worked at the library and was the girl Brighton was interested in, but after their first date, he realizes they don't have a lot in common and ends up asking questions about her roomate Dani, who he had already met by literally running into her on their way to class. Dani intrigued him. Next he took out their other roomate Sandy who was very self centered and Brighton couldn't get a word in edge wise. All this time he is still thinking of Dani and can't figure out why he can't get her out of his mind and also realizing he needs to convince her to go out on a date. Dani is somewhat standoffish and doesn't have any experience dating and can't figure out why he is interested in her. As the story progresses we find these two characters have genuine feelings for eachother and this was a really cute love story. They definately had issues to overcome and found myself rooting for the happily ever scenario. I wasn't dissapointed. The only reason I gave this book three stars was because I felt this was a book I would of loved a little more when I was in highschool. It was wrapped and packaged in a cute little bow, when the woman in me wanted to see more stuggle and more chemistry. I predicted the outcome, but I feel it was still a cute read. It didn't hold my focus one hundred percent and I was able to walk away from the story and pick it up later. Though I said all that, I still think it's a really good read and I'm glad I read it and really liked the Characters of Dani and Brighton.

fantastic book! This had lots of good messages in it. Danelle, has had absentee parents her whole life, her father being a plastic surgeon always putting his career first and her mother all to happy to play his social wife. If it weren't for Nana, Dani wouldn't have had a down to earth view of life, but because of her parents she has made irrealistic assumptions about her life. She doesn't want to date/ marry a doctor because she wants to have a routine life involving her husband and she doesn't want to have money.
When Brighton's roommates change the rules to their laundry bet, he finds himself with three roommates to take on 2 dates without their knowing. What he doesn't know is one of the girls Dani will be one girl he will want to see again. She turns him down after she finds out about the bet, but lives 18 months of heartache because she is too stubborn to admit she was wrong to send him away. Brighton goes on to medical school and they have parted ways until her Nana dies and leaves a trust with "alot" of money which both of them must sign off on to use for charities. Dani finds she is the wealthy woman she never wanted to be and she finds herself back with Brighton and this time she doesn't send him away. There is a problem though, he is still going to be an orthopedic surgeon and the small town of Garysville, Tx, that she loves doesn't have a hospital. Compromises are made for the sake of love and the true spirit of giving to others. Dani give up her Nana's house to some of her new friends who are more needing and creates a way for other's to benefit from the wealth that her Nana left her. Brighton also wins over her overbearing parents and they have a plan to marry and do residency in TX, but wait and see where they live because if they are together that is the most important.

I really liked the first 100 pages of this book--the part that was like the synopsis on the back of the book, but then the plot drastically changed and I didn’t like it as much. After this the story dragged for me and seemed kind of flat. It held my interest enough that I wanted to find out how it all turned out, but it wasn’t as enjoyable and fun as the first part. I really liked Brighton, but had a hard time relating to and understanding Dani. I was glad she finally displayed some unselfishness regarding Brighton near the end--her attitudes and behavior throughout the rest of the book were often hard for me to understand, if she really did have feelings for him. There are also lots of other characters in the book that I never felt like I really got to know--a lot of the plot and people seemed glossed-over and sketchy. The book overall has a feel-good message and a sweet romance, but I didn’t really connect with it completely and I didn’t find it overly memorable. (And, I have to ask (slight SPOILERS): what was in the letter Brighton mentioned receiving from Rose? And, did Brighton’s sister ever get over her issues with Dani?)

I won this as a First-Reads book. It sounded like a fun, light read. That's exactly what it is. This is much more of a teenage/young adult book. It was a quick read and kind of cute.

The premise is that Brighton makes a bet with his friends to date 3 roommates (2 dates each) over a month's time, without them finding out that they were all dating the same guy. Problem is, he falls for Dani -- the strongest, most independent of the three girls. This is only the first 1/3 of the book. The rest deals with the struggle of Dani & Brighton's on/off relationship.

I have to admit that I'm not a very religious person, so the references to both of the main characters praying to God for answers was a little strange to me. Not something I often think of for 20-something couples. But it wasn't too distracting. I thought that Brighton was portrayed as a little "too perfect", but then again, it is written primarily from Dani's point of view.

Overall, I would say that this is a light, quick read for someone who is interested in a wholesome romance story. Could easily see this as a Lifetime movie someday. :)

Eh...I don't know what to feel about this book

Pros: I liked Dani...a lot. We have really similar personalities so I was able to connect to her. She was understandable and sweet, and had a lot of growth. I also liked the side characters. They were cute and I enjoyed them.

Cons:
The romance. NO CHEMISTRY!!! Ok this is me personally: often times I am friends with boys before I like them. Because I have a habit of that I have such a difficult time understanding people who fall in love in literally a month or two. I just don't get it. That's not enough time for me to know and trust somebody...fall in love??? Not happening. Also...punching holes in walls over a girl you knew for a month??? That's not cute...that's creepy. I can understand punching holes through walls if someone just got cancer, your spouse cheated in you, your child or any loved one really died, your being threatened, etc. But over a girl who wasn't even officially your girlfriend breaking up with you? Sorry that's not a thing. Also I wanted more of brightons story...he barely ever narrated.

Basically I liked the characters themselves, but the plot was lame and there was little chemistry.

Though I am not normally a fan of modern day lds fiction I did enjoy this story. Noteworthy of this book is that it is a finalist in the romance category for the 2010 Whitney awards. After accepting a bet from his roommates Brighton has to date 3 girls (all roommates) that can't know that he is dating any of their roommates and get them all to go out with him twice in a one month period.

Amazon Product Description:
When Brighton's roommates bet him that he can't get three girls to go out with him at the same time, he has no doubt that he's up to the challenge. Besides, the prospect of an entire month of free laundry is just too enticing to resist. Of course, that's before he meets Dani--a girl who's never had a problem turning down a not-so-perfect guy. Soon Brighton realizes that winning the bet might mean losing what really matters most. This fast-paced modern romance is told with wit, sweetness, and a healthy dose of fun. It's a sure bet that Luck of the Draw will keep you laughing to the very last page.

Audience: Adult (Clean)
Genre: Romantic Comedy, LDS
Length: 214 pages

Rating: ***+

Review: I've been trying to pin down why I'm only rating this three-plus stars. I feel like maybe I should rate it four . . . mostly I'm not because it has to do with expectations. I expected something different from this novel. For me it felt . . . heavy? In the RomCom category anyway. And all the RomComs I've read so far deal with issues, but this one didn't quite keep the lightness in the mid-section as it dealt with those issues. It just sort of felt like it swung from RomCom to Romance (Drama) then back to RomCom. I still loved Brighton and Dani's relationship. Brighton is a fun hero that I enjoyed. I don't always have the best feelings for heroines who refuse to see the utter worthiness of the cool males we drop into these stories for them, so Dani and I didn't click so much, but she's still a fun character with gumption and get-it-done togetherness.

Disclaimer: None.
