Kate began reading romance in 1979 when she picked up a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss's Ashes in the Wind. She read the book from cover to cover in one very long night and was immediately hooked on the genre.
The next morning, she was standing at the door to her local Waldenbooks and when they opened, she hurried inside and asked for everything else written by Woodiwiss. At the same time, she found wonderful books by Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, and Jennifer Blake.
Nearly 10 years later, while working as an advertising copywriter, Kate decided to try writing a romance of her own. After a history of interesting jobs in teaching, retailing, advertising, and nonprofit work, she was determined to add romance author to that list.
After numerous failed attempts over three years, Kate decided to forget writing historical romance and turned to category romance. Six months later, her first story, A Vagabond Heart, was finished. A year later, Harlequin bought the book after Kate won the national 1992 Harlequin Temptation contest. The book was published in 1993 as Indecent Exposure.
Her dream of adding romance writer to her resume came true and in December of 1993 she turned off her alarm clock, shredded her pantyhose, and became a full-time writer.
Since then, Kate has written numerous books for Temptation, Weddings by DeWilde, Harlequin anthologies, Love and Laughter, and Duets. Her new Duet, Three Babies and a Bargain (July 2000) will be her 24th project for Harlequin and All Through the Night (August 2000), a Temptation Blaze, will mark her 25th.
Kate lives in southeastern Wisconsin in a cozy little house in a picturesque village. Two cats also live with her—Tansing, a grumpy Himalayan, and Tibriz, a tortie Persian mix that she rescued from an animal shelter. She enjoys gardening, golf, reading, and romantic movies.
Setting: Boston – house, attic in house across street, apartment, bar
Theme: Love, truth, finding the truth – both of facts and of self,
Character: Liam Quinn – the charmer, the baby, photographer, kinda floating through life. He agrees to surveillance of Eleanor from the attic across from her apartment – and of course, gets a glimpse of her naked (in her 3rd floor bedroom) on his first night.
Eleanor Thorpe – 26, Harvard business school, accountant, possible embezzler. In New York, she quits her job when it becomes uncomfortable continuing to work at the bank withher ex boyfriend (who had asked back all of the gifts he had given her – she gave them all back except for a music box), and she moves to Boston to start anew, and she swears off men for a year (Ronald isn’t the only bad judgement she made about a man’s motives). A quarter of a million dollars is missing from their bank, and Ronald has left employment also. She is having trouble finding a job in Boston.
Ronald Pettibone – 31, Eleanor’s coworker, and exlover, and possible embezzler, well … he is the embezzler… he placed the money in a bank in Boston (when he visited there with Eleanor, and hid the safety deposit key into a music box he gifted her… he’s been trying to locate her in Boston.
Sean Quinn - Liam’s roommate – PI – pays Liam to help him sometimes… is investigating Eleanor, hoping Ronald will show up and they will lead him to the money.
Fiona, Keely, and Rafe – the Quinn’s lost mother and unknown sister and her husband… must have been an inbetween book I missed.
Summary: When watching Eleanor’s apartment, he notices someone breaking into her apartment… so he runs across and tries to stop him. Eleanor hears the commotion and hits Liam over the head with a lamp then ties him up while waiting for police – the real perpetrator gets away.
And Liam and Eleanor slowly enter into a relationship… Liam’s charm eases the way, and he doesn’t believe she is an embezzler… Eleanor doesn’t want to have feelings for Liam, but can’t deny them. They spend time together… they spend time in bed together… they go to a family party together (and she fits in fine)… and Sean tries to warn Liam away, but he can’t help himself.
Another break-in leads Liam to bring her to his apartment, where she finds some of his pictures of her… and when he tells her the truth, she is hurt, but she asks Liam and Sean to help her prove her innocence… with wires and a set up, they do… and it takes Liam and Eleanor to get over themselves, to realize love is most important, and finally Eleanor comes to him at the bar… ahhh Memorable scenes: To avoid falling in love, “Never ride to the rescue of a damsel in distress.”
