Champ and Me by the Maple Tree: A Vermont Tale
Author Ed Shankman and illustrator Dave O'Neill turn their attention to Vermont and one of that state's great Champ, the Monster of Lake Champlain. Champ is seen through the eyes of a likable tomboy, who sets out from her favorite spot by a maple tree and finds herself by the lakeshore. She meets Champ, who turns out to be a very kid-friendly monster--inviting the girl to sit on his head and ride with him through the Vermont countryside. Together, these unlikely friends dash past farms and mills and over covered bridges, meet some cows, eat some maple syrup-covered cheese, and eventually return to the girl's favorite maple tree. The charming story ends as it If you come to Vermont / Near a lake called Champlain, / And you cut through the woods / On an old country lane, There's a chance you will see / My friend Champ and me / Playing happy and free / By the old maple tree.

A captivating tale about Vermont's very own sea monster!
"I knew who he was
From his myth and his fame.
Although few had seen him,
We all knew his name.
This could be none other
Than one and the same.
It was Champ-the legend
Of old Lake Champlain!"
Join Champ on his adventures with his new friends (a girl, a bird, and a bug) as they race through Vermont pastures, whittle wood, relax on covered bridges, and raid the fridge for Vermont classics of cheese and maple syrup. A wonderful way for children to learn the highlights of this beautiful New England state and the myth of its famous sea monster, Champ! (Being a Vermont native, this book is now saved in my library with my other beloved children's classics.)

What a great children's book! My five year old and I thoroughly enjoy reading this book together. We found this gem at the Ben and Jerry's home in Vermont. Whimsicle and fun with beautiful illustrations.
