fucking hated this book, it ruined my life, liberty, and persuit of happiness and I'm taking it to a book burning fest this afternoon. 0/10 if I could because it sucked that bad. My mother hasn't stopped crying and I don't blame her.
I thought this was hugely disappointing... As a (very) late hire still working two other part-time jobs, I needed a few Cheater strategies to inspire me or, at least, give me some good ideas for the first couple weeks of 7th grade When a book is advertised (and titled) as “Ready-to-Use Techniques and Materials” I was hoping for some really great lesson ideas… most of them were so boring. No wonder kids hate English! I found better, more relevant and intriguing ideas from just googling stuff and looking at other teacher websites… It was ok, a few decent prompts, but nothing to write home about… Wish I hadn’t spent the money…
For the most part, as soon as some teaching material hits the shelves it is outdated. However, this book has far more items that are timeless and helpful that outdated and useless. I don't imagine that it would be much help to the experienced and set teacher other than a refresh of a few small ideas and maybe a few ways to tweak things in the classroom.
I thought this book was great when I was starting my student teaching, but I never really looked at it again once I started my own classroom. I have meant to go back to it to see if it had things I could use now.
There was probably some helpful information in this book, but it is a little outdated. And, I believe that some of the assignments would be more appropriate for the middle school level. An updated version would probably be a great resource for a new teacher.
Hmm. This book is overly simplistic, and the chapters were hit-or-miss for me. I think it could be a good beginning tool, AS LONG AS one does not assume that this book is enough by itself.
