Rate this book
All the Pee Wee Scouts love to celebrate the holidays, but Thanksgiving is not Molly Duff's favorite one. In fact, Thansgiving is big trouble for Molly. It's not so bad when they visit a turkey farm and Sonny Betz takes a turkey home with him. But when Mrs. Peters, their troop leader, tells them about the Pee Wee Thanksgiving play at the town hall, Molly shivers. She's not an actress! She'll forget all her lines. Everyone will laugh. Born on May 6th in St. Paul, Minnesota, Judy Delton lived in her hometown for most of her life. She wrote more than one hundred books for children, including the popular Pee Wee Scouts series, which sold more than seven million copies. Her writing was often compared to Beverly Cleary or Carolyn Haywood for her ability to capture the essence of childhood.

For many years, Ms. Delton taught writing classes in her home. Today, those writers are having their own books published and remember her forthright instruction and critique with appreciation. Many writers have benefited from her handbook, The 29 Most Common Writing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.

Ms. Delton had four children and decided to quit teaching so she could stay home and raise them. Writing prolifically was her way of supporting her family. She died very suddenly of a blood infection in December of 2001. Her legions of friends and all those she taught were greatly saddened.

Cute children's book about food pantry baskets, turkey farms, thanksgiving plays, and...deciding to have peanut butter instead of turkey at thanksgiving dinner. Of note, I like the boy who said the food baskets should have dog food. :) Even pets need to be cared for...aaah.

I found old book reports from when I was in 5th grade. Keeping my reviews true to what I wrote, and saving them in the year I would have read them:

Sonny got a turkey when they went to the turkey farm. The kids do a [Thanksgiving Day] play and the mayor gives out badges [for their concern of turkeys] .

The Pee Wee Scouts have several great projects planned to celebrate Thanksgiving. They are making baskets for the food drive, and they collected lots of food like canned goods, peanut butter, cereal, and pasta to go in the baskets, and then they will be delivered to poor people to make their Thanksgiving happy. But it isn't as easy as it looks. Molly's basket is too tight and skinny: it's a one-can size. Rachel's is too loose, and the cans would fall out of it. Starting over is the only option, and this time they will get them right.

Then there is a trip to a turkey farm. How exciting, but the kids all feel sorry for the turkeys, and after seeing and petting the turkeys, they really will not want to eat one. They all agree that they will probably eat peanut butter for Thanksgiving dinner.

Sonny has really fallen in love with a big turkey with two black tail feathers, and manages to talk his mother into buying the turkey for him to take home as a pet. At the next meeting of the Pee Wee Scouts, Sonny is leading his turkey on a red leash. He has named the big bird "Tiger." Sonny is going to build a bird house for Tiger and earn a scout badge for bird house building. Some of the other kids want to help with that project, because it will have to be a very large bird house for Tiger to fit it.

Their main project is the Thanksgiving play, but Molly is very nervous about that...she just is not an actor, and she is sure that she will forget her lines, and everyone will laugh and make fun of her. Nevertheless, Molly's part is going to be the pilgrim mother. She only has one line to remember, but she's just sure that she will forget it. She's especially worried when she finds out that the mayor will be there to see her ruin the play.

The late Judy Delton really knew kids, and had a real flair for writing a great story that keeps kids laughing and turning the pages. Alan Tiegreen's comical pen-and-ink drawings add visual impact to the story. PEANUT-BUTTER PILGRIMS is one of a fun-filled series about the Pee Wee Scouts that will have kids begging for more. This story will be especially good as a read-aloud family time story for younger kids, or independent reading for older children that is guaranteed to keep them entranced.

The Pee-Wee Scouts visit a Turkey Farm during Thanksgiving time. They begin to feel sorry for the turkeys and all agree to eat peanut butter instead of Turkey on Thanksgiving. One scout, Sunny, decides to keep a pet turkey for himself and names him Tiger. Sunny treats Tiger as if he is a pet dog. The scout's troop leader tells them about a Thanksigiving play, which everyone is excited for except Molly. Molly is extremely nervous about being in front of people, being made fun of and that she will forget all of her lines. She becomes especially nervous when she finds out that the town mayor will be attending the play. She nails her part and even saves the day for fellow scout!

A Pee Wee Scout Thanksgiving story. There are two story threads: Molly coping with stage fright in the Pee Wee Scout Thanksgiving play and the Scouts visiting a farm and becoming attached to the turkeys. It ends with none of the Scouts being able to eat turkeys because they have viewed the turkeys as pets.
