Loved this story, the 7th in the series. I've only read one other so far but I'm going to read all the rest shortly.
The world building is so complete that I'm sure you wouldn't need to read the other books, I had no difficulty with it at all.
In this series there are humans, mages and the Truax who are basically shapeshifters. There are 11 clans of Truax all of whom need the human and mage woman to mate because Truax are always born male. The Truax barter their security skills for volunteer woman and the chance of a mate.
The political crisis finally happens when the darkmages decide its time to take over and try to wipe out the truax. It is up to our heroine Flame Curate Vivienne of Second City and Skymage Champion Groundbear Odan to save the day.

I wanted to like this book because I was looking forward to Odan’s story since the previous book but Vivienne absolutely ruined it for me. I disliked her the moment she was introduced and it never got better. She was so selfish and arrogant and essentially TSTL. I was surprised she never got a scene with Rowan as she participated in her capture but it was just mostly killing stupid lizard birds and her terrible jokes about frogs lol.

Extra hot shapeshifter fantasy. For those who like their pnr with some extra bite.
