The Oklahoma Brands #2

Brand New Heartache

Rate this book
He was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, but that hadn't stopped Wade Armstrong from wanting Edie Brand while they were in high school. Now she was back in town, and Wade felt compelled to keep her safe—even if it meant moving in with her.
Edie's pretty face had always gotten her noticed, but now it had earned the former model the admiration of a stalker. So she left L.A. for her Oklahoma hometown, hoping for a place to hide, and found shelter in the most unexpected place. But as the stalker got closer to home, independent Edie had to entrust her life to Wade's protection—and found herself surrendering her heart, as well.

I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.

My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.

No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)

That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!

And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)

Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.

Glory is not amused.

She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

This one is about the Edie, the Brand sister who went to LA and became a famous lingerie model much to the chagrin of her mother but Edie is back and has been for five months, just sitting around the house doing nothing, trying to figure out what to do with life when her mother gives her a kick, she is more than her looks and she should follow her dream of a photography studio.

Wade had a huge crush on Edie in high-school, he adored her, but she never noticed him, or so he thought, he was always conscious about how people thought he was trash so for years he has worked hard to be successful with his mechanic business, save hard to buy the house he wants and show Edie and people like her that he can be something. All of Edie's shoots are wallpapered all over his shop.

Edie noticed Wade all right, she was in awe of him and his dangerous reputation and when both of them see the same house they get into it, with Wade being a sexist jerk and each conversation they have later, Wade bring sex into it, but we are made to see that Wade is a good guy no matter how he tries to depict it otherwise and the reason he kept her pictures was because he has been in love with her.

Edie's life went to hell when she got a stalker who attacked her and then she came home, so did the stalker, and Wade stands up for her, to protect her when she is not willing to tell anyone in the family. Edie realizes her own self-worth beyond the touched up photo-shoots and Wade is just there for her.

Over to the next book.

I love this series but there were other books in it that I thought were better than this one. It was still good but not my favorite. I was expecting another sweet, funny love story like Maya and Caleb in Book One, 'The Brands Who Came for Christmas' which at last count I have read three times.

This book is about Edie Brand, the daughter of Vidalia who left home at eighteen and became what is equivalent to a Victoria Secret model. She is heading home after a stalker in LA almost killed her. While in high school Edie did her best not to look at the sexy, too hot, too smooth of a bad boy Wade. His reputation for seducing girls who just couldn't say no to him on the very first date was rampant and that very fact scared her to death.

In high school Wade Armstrong was half in love with Edie Brand but he didn't think she knew he existed. Now that her crazy stalker has followed her home, she just may need this bad boy to keep her safe. What troubled me is that I don't think Wade understood the reason Edie and her friends did what ever they could to stay out of his sight. He thought the girls found themselves better than him when in fact they were scared to death of him. They had heard the stories from other girls about how Wade could convince and seduce anyone to have sex with him on the first date. Apparently he was very hot to trot and all the gals were hot for him yet most avoided him because of the sexual fear. I don't think it was explained very well to Wade for him to understand what had really gone on. He thought they were shunning him yet he would turn around and say very negative and hurtful things about them...pot meet kettle!!!

There was a lot of secret-keeping by Edie about what was truly going on and it bordered on ridiculous. Just OTT! Her family knew something was seriously wrong but she refused to tell them. She thought if they didn't know it would assure their safety.

In my opinion this was just okay. I also didn't like how mean Wade was to Edie and he was just to full of himself.

This one is just really cute. I adored Wade and his dialogue. Edie was a little harder to understand, but she grew on me. Great story, with a stalker in LA that follows Edie home to little Big Falls, Oklahoma where she grew up and where Wade has stayed. There are a few moments of suspense, of course, but mostly it was humorous and fun.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense particularly the banter between hero and heroine even though it grayed the distinction between passion and obsession. I wished the heroine wasn't so keen on keeping her secret, however, the action and plot compensated. Lingerie model Edie is back in her hometown and interested in buying the same house that mechanic Wade is also looking to buy.

I’m currently bouncing back and forth between the Oklahoma Brands and the Texas Brands and loving every minute of it. ;) I’ve come to consider them my ‘feel good’ reading diversion. The characters are fun and witty, there’s just a little bit of danger and a whole lot of smexiness… what’s not to love?

Edie is the prodigal daughter. She is the only one of the Brand girls to leave home, but she came back and in Brand New Heartache she feels like she has something to prove. Running into Wade Armstrong was not part of her plan.

There’s a lot more to Wade than meets the eye… especially Edie’s. Turns out not even he knows how much she really means to him.

In true Brand fashion there are some serious miscommunications, overprotective siblings, a little bit of danger, a mother who raised a brood of independent thinkers and a whole lot of fun.

Next up is Secrets and Lies which features Mel and Alex working under cover. Things are bound to get interesting :)

Honestly this series is really cheesetastic and unbelievable, bordering on ridiculous, but for some reason I like it! I really don't understand why, they're not very good. But I read the first on since it was free and read the teaser for the next and couldn't help myself. I liked this one better than the first. I like grumpy Wade but at the same time was a little creeped out by him sometimes. But I tried to just ignore those parts.

Another fantastic story from Maggie. I just adore her style of writing and I really get sucked frim the first few pages of these books. I've absolutely loved all of her books from the Texas Brands and now the Oklahoma Brands too. I love the feeling of family and loyalty too, and you see all of the characters grow as yiu move through the series.

I have to say I wasn't as drawn to Wade in this book and I did cringe quite a few times at what he was saying to Edie. I also thought the painting was a bit creeoy and a little unnecessary. But apart from that I loved the book, it's nice to have a story that keeps you guessing and has a really good back plot aswell as the love story which is happening along side it. A brilliant read and I thoroughly recommend it.

DNF. I tried to hang in there but at a little over 50% I just couldn't take the bizarre fixation the H has for the h. I often have a hard time with characters who can't move past high school, but this guy took the cake with a stalkerish collection of pictures of the h who was a lingerie model. All because he crushed on her in high school and he believed she looked down on him. It is 10 years later. He is 28. And meanwhile a(nother) stalker is after the h, but no one thinks the H's fixation on her is even weird, if not downright creepy.

Dude. Two words. Get therapy.

Fame, a villain and love that simmered over a decade

They knew each other in high school. Wade was the tough guy, rough around the edges, sexy. All the girls talked about him and wanted to spend time in his arms. Edie just watched him, when no one was looking. Maybe a bit afraid that if their eyes met she wouldn’t be able to stay a way from him. He was determined to make something of himself, prove the town people wrong. There was more to him than his reputation said.
She left the small town to become a super star model for a lingerie company. He had her photos plastered all over the walls of his very successful garage in town. He never forgot her, but he had tried to bury the feeling he for her. Until she turned back up in town thirteen years later, still every bit as beautiful and aloof as ever. She’d been here almost five months, what had brought her back to this small town and how long would she stay?
She wasn’t running away as much as escaping from L. A.; her career or maybe lack of. Secrets…she had them and maybe some regrets too. With her Mother pushing her to get up and move, to find something to do with her life, Edie had an idea about stepping around to the other side of the camera. She just needed the right place to set up a studio. Unfortunately, the perfect house she found was the same one Wade Armstrong was looking to buy. Too bad for him, that he ticked her off when they accidentally met there ahead of the realtor. She bought it straight out from under him with cold hard cash.
Too bad her past was still chasing her.
The story was peppered with characters, Edie’s sisters and Mom, that I came to know through their dialogue and actions. Wade was a guy that people saw only as an extension of his abusive father and didn’t give him a chance, so he made his own. The storyline is well played out with Edie and Wade learning to trust, while trying to sort out feelings that reached back to high school. There is a bit of a mystery, a darn good romance, humor and strong family ties and just touch of spice. Each had something to prove, they could make it on their own, before they could become one. The storyline doesn’t layout all the who, what, where and why. It leaves just enough room for the reader to fill in the blankets.
Maggie Shayne’s writing style feels like a ride down a river on a windy day. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

I love Maggie Shayne's Brands books. My problem is that I picked so many of them up on sale that I have no idea where I actually would be in a series.
I started with the Texas brands and by accident stumbled into the Oklahoma ones. I know that I have so many more to read but I try to keep them as a treat when I need a good pick me up.
Brand New Heartache continued the trend of a satisfying and addictive read. I started this Sunday morning and stayed up late into Sunday night to finish it.
Edie is an interesting character. An underwear model whose world was shaken by a stalker she spends a lot of time trying to figure out who she is outside of modeling. The novel really drives home that looks are not what truly matter. What I really liked was the message that anyone is beautiful once they are comfortable in their own skin. <3
Wade Armstrong is the bad boy you love to hate then you just love. He sets out denying actual feelings Edie and in his attempts to control those feelings he is crudely and rudely insulting. The sting is taken from the insults by his gentlemanly actions (which speak much louder than his words) and his interior monologue that shows him to be very kind.
I liked that both characters had so much going on underneath.
The plot isn't anything revolutionary and it's familiar, though I was surprised by who the stalker turned out to be. If you have read any number of romance novels you knew what was coming.
It's really Shayne's gifts for characters that keeps me coming back for the next book.

This is the second book in the Oklahoma Brands series. This book had a little more action along with the romance than the previous book in the series did. It was a quick fun read.
Edie was the sister who left town to be an underwear model in LA. Her mother never did like it. At the end of book one, Edie suddenly shows up to stay but no one is quite sure what happened. Edie came home to hide from a crazy stalker who she was afraid would hurt or kill her. Wade Armstrong was the son of the local drunk and always thought people didn't like or respect him. He has had a crush on Edie since they were in high school but believe she thought she was better than him. When Edie asks the local real estate lady about any houses for sale, she goes to look at one that Wade is also looking at. He makes her mad and she buys the house out from under him. Feeling guilty, she is going to apologize but discovers a gift from her stalker and decides to keep the house to keep her family safe. But Edie feels safe around Wade and Wade wants to watch over her. When her stalker gets into her new house she calls Wade who comes running. Can Wade stop the stalker before he gets to Edie and will they both finally admit their true feelings?

"Brand New Heartache (The Oklahoma Brands #2) by Maggie Shayne is book 2 in this series. As much as I loved the 1st book in this series I loved Edain Brand aka Edie's story even more. Edie comes back to town when her older sister gives birth to twins and gets married. She is no longer interested in being in L.A. and posing for a famous lingerie company. Bad boy Wade Armstrong made a name for himself since High school and is now no longer the source of whispers in the community. When a stalker follows Edie to her hometown she finds herself relying on Wade more than she first wanted. This book is a definite page turner. I highly recommend reading the series from the beginning because characters from each book will be brought into other stories in this series.

Book 1 is better

Edie Brand leaves her life as a lingerie model in California and moves back to her small home town in Oklahoma. Her path crosses with her longtime crush, Wade. They soon find out the attraction is mutual. But Edie is keeping a secret that she has a stalker that she thinks has followed her to Oklahoma. Will she let her guards down to Wade and will he be able to protect her?

The storyline would have made for a good book but I couldn’t get past all the lewd, suggestive comments and ultimately the sex scene. I’m not sure if I will read another in the series.

Great Read!

I enjoy reading about the Brand family! From the mama, Vidalia, to her 5 daughters and the men introduced to their lives. This story is about Edie and Wade! Edie is a underwear model who leaves that world unexpectedly and everyone is trying to figure out why! This book had me on the edge of my seat more than the last book! Why? You have to read it to find out! I know everyone will enjoy reading this book and I recommend that you do! Happy Reading!

One of those stupid women

At the start of this story, I felt for the hero, how people treated him, even the heroine. (Now at chapter 14, it is hard to give her that title.) Then the story continued just fine. Until Edie lost all her brain matter and decided to withhold information from the law, the PI, and the hero and went to meet the physco alone. I stopped reading the story to write this review.

This is the second book in the series and I loved it. It continues the story of the Brand family. The characters will steal your heart . Maggie has created a great group of people who seem so real. The story flows along and I hated to put it down till I found out the ending. If you like romances with heart ---you will live this one. Alice

Book 2 of the series as good as 1

Surprised at how much I’m enjoying the Brand gals. Their extremely likable characters with endearing, humorous and heartwarming qualities. This story is a bit darker than the first but very engaging. I’ve actually read the books back to back in the same day and just downloaded the 3 rd

Wade Armstrong, high school bad boy has a crush on the most popular and gorgeous girl in high school, but Edie Brand doesn't seem to pay any attention to him. Years later she returns to their small town after 13 years as a top underwear model in LA and quickly buys the very house Wade planned to buy with money he had made from his automotive repair company. So now they are enemies but Wade shows up whenever Edie is frightened since she had a stalker in LA that scared her until she ran back home. I didn't like that Wade is a superman and a great lover, of course. Pass.

Real Love

To carry a touch for 15 years or more is real love. You wrote this story jus right. From beginning to end it kept you wondering who would be stalking her and just to think it was the guy that took her to the prom. It was a great ending. I Like This Book.
