Kaye Redmond has always had a "can do" attitude and was involved in things around her community , until her personal life took a nose dive when her husband Plastic Surgeon Cliff informed her he was leaving and that he had been cheating on her. For Kaye , it seems that her fairytale world is not as perfect as she would like it from her fairytale wedding destroyed , her Prince Charming a cheating jerk and her ex-mother in law who definitely fits the category as evil queen. When a year later , Kaye gets a phone call from her mother-in-law asking for help , Kaye sees this as an opportunity to maybe win her husband back as she never stopped loving him. However, things are about to get a bit complicated as Kaye's new client Jack seems to be her perfect match . Will Kaye settle for second best and go back to Cliff's open arms or will she realise that her actual Prince Charming is just around the corner , holding a single white rose. In a society where life and love is filled with nips , tucks, surgically-enhanced mistresses and monster-in-laws, Can Kaye find her opening for a happily-ever after ?
Kaye’s husband left her and their daughter for a younger woman. Kaye has spent the year since their divorce hoping and praying that they can be reconciled and get back together. When Cliff’s mother calls her because she needs a place to stay after a botched facelift, Kaye believes this may be just the thing to bring Cliff back to her.
Isabel(Izzie) is a typical self-centered teen who has never had a relationship with her grandmother and is not happy about Marla moving in with them. She is resentful of her father leaving the family for another woman and has a more realistic view of it than Kaye does. When Izzie meets Gabe her interests are drawn outside of herself to helping other people.
Kaye’s job is to get houses ready for the owner’s to sell by staging furniture and highlighting the assets of the house. When she meets Jack there is instant attraction. But Kaye is determined that God’s will is for her to win back her husband. Gabe’s father died of cancer. Gabe is living with Jack so that Jack can help Gabe finish his Eagle Scout project, renovating a park for handicap children to be able to play.
Izzie is all for helping Gabe with his project but soon become involved in a project of her own. Lily whom she used to babysit is dying of cancer. Izzie is determined to raise money to help with Lily’s rising medical bills. The swimathon becomes a community project that brings Izzie and Gabe and Jack and Kaye together.
Dealing with an ex-mother-in-law that never liked her, an ex-husband that is showing renewed interest in her, a daughter full of teen angst, and new feelings stirring for Jack, Kaye struggles to find what God’s purpose for her is.
I’m torn about this author’s writing. I read her book Elvis Takes a Back Seat and am having the same feelings about Facelift as I did about that book. Sometimes the writing seems disjointed. I had a hard time knowing if the character was saying something out loud or if she was “thinking” what she wanted to say. Sometimes I was lost as to who was doing the talking. The reason I am torn though is because Leanna Ellis’ characters are so engaging that the book is hard to put down until after you find out how the story ends.
I'll be completely honest...contemporary romance/chick lit novels are not my usual reading fare these days. With my limited time, I'm usually inclined to stick with nonfiction or good historical fiction. So, I wasn't super enthusiastic when I received a copy of Facelift to review.
In spite of that, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed the book! It was a very well-written, sweet story. The character development was excellent. I really found myself drawn into the story. Kaye struggles with wanting to "help" or "make" God's will (or what she thinks is God's will) happen in her life. I was often frustrated with her tunnel vision about reconciling with her ex. I particularly found Kaye's client/friend Jack and her teenage daugher Izzy very refreshing and "real". Cousin It (the dog) and her antics were great! The ex-mother-in-law, Marla, well...let's just say I admired Kaye's patience with her! I was actually convicted that unpleasant, demanding people like Marla are usually lonely, unhappy people who need our prayers and love, not our annoyance and criticism. The themes of cosmetic surgery (not your usual subject matter!) and divorce/remarriage were handled gracefully. I enjoyed the humor as well as the underlying attitude of love and generosity that permeated the entire story.
All in all, Facelift is an enjoyable novel that I'm happy to recommend as a great pleasure read! Ms. Ellis is an excellent writer and I'm glad I had the chance to read the book. Thanks so much to B&H Publishing for providing a review copy to me.
This was the first “chick lit” book I've read in awhile and it was a fun twist from my usual reading preferences. I am not that familiar with Leanna Ellis or her other books, but Facelift is a cute read – especially for those who are over the age of 30.
Younger readers may not be able to identify with the main character (Kaye Redmond) who is questioning everything about her life.
30-somethings and above readers will totally “get” Kaye. She is a middle age divorcee, trying to start a new career while raising a teenage daughter and still pining for her ex-husband (who left her for greener pastures.)
She has a love-hate relationship with her mother-in-law who just never seems to go away and can’t seem to imagine herself ever being in another romantic relationship. She wildly careens through life trying to juggle too many tasks and often times finds herself spinning completely out of control. For most of this book I felt sorry for Kaye as she just couldn’t seem to ever successfully jump through all of the hoops that she lined up for herself and then constantly beat herself up over it.
While this book is humorous and chock full of tongue-in-cheek quips and sarcasm, it also has its serious elements. The overall message that I got from this book is that life changes whether we give it permission to or not. Sometimes those changes are good and sometimes not so good. Even though we will face unexpected changes and circumstances – the one constant we have to rely on in life is our relationship with God.
Kaye Redmond has a new life, one she did not choose for herself. The life of a single mom. Her husband Cliff, left her for another woman, and she found herself having to start over. She started a new business and is doing well, but change is coming. A botched plastic surgery finds Kaye taking care of her ex-mother-in-law. She is not doing it out of kindness, she has ulterior motives, she hopes that by doing this, it will bring Cliff back and their marriage can be restored. However Kaye is quickly learning that this might be more than she bargained for. Her mother-in-law has not become any kinder than she ever was, and she is always criticizing Kaye, and her sixteen year daughter Isabel. A new client turns Kaye's world topsy turvy upside down. Jack is a very successful businessman that seems to have a knack for understand how Kaye feels. He and Gabe, his best friend's son who lives with Jack after the death of his father, enter the life of Kaye and Izzie, along with their big fuzzy dog Cousin It, and life will never be the same. Is this a good thing or not? Kaye is not sure. A wonderfully amusing story, you will sit back and laugh at the antics of Cousin It, and the antics of Marla the mother-in-law. Leanna Ellis once again shows her excellent story telling ability in this delightful book! 304 page $14.99 US 5 stars This book was provided for review purposes only, no payment was received for this review.
I really enjoy Leanna Ellis's books, they are always different and unique. This book doesn't disappoint - I love the way she uses the work Facelift on so many levels in this book. It will really make you think, and yet you'll laugh while enjoying this wonderful book.
What does God really want for our lives? Leanna Ellis delves into this question and many more as she takes us on a wonderful journey with Kaye Redmond to make God's will happen in her life... right? Surely when the marriage vows were made God intended them to be adhered to no matter what. Kaye is convinced that even though her husband cheated on her, left her and divorced her that it is still her destiny to get him back from the bimbo he left her for. Of course in the meantime she has started her own home staging business in order to support her and their teenage daughter and she is finding a strength within herself that she didn't know she had. In everything except where her ex-husband is concerned, so when he calls about his mother needing a place to stay after her botched facelift how can she refuse even though she can't stand the nasty woman. What ensues is a journey of discovery for all involved. What a great journey it is!
Facelift is the perfect chick-lit book for a Saturday afternoon or a lazy day at home. The text is full of witty observations by the heroine, Kaye. The seemingly impossible, but oh-so-realistic situations she finds herself in had this reader laughing out loud several times. Any one who has been on the receiving end of a failed marriage has entertained thoughts of reuniting with the ex, all the while wondering if the attractive man in line in front of you finds you equally attractive.
Kaye is not a perfect character - she readily admits to the mistakes she has made in the past - but she is still someone that is relatable and the kind of woman one would want as a friend.
I think this is a book women of all ages can really enjoy, but I definitely see it appealing to more middle aged women, because they will be able to relate all the more. I felt as though the other characters in the book were well fleshed out, although some of the antagonists were a bit one dimensional, it didn't really matter, because the story wasn't about them or their (lack of) personal growth. The writing was sharp and funny, with a lot of now pop culture references to make you laugh...
This book was awesome! Leanna Ellis writes really sweet, Christian themed inspirational books. I've read several of her books and really liked all of them. Her stories just make me feel good! This book just has a really great message about following God's will even when he leads you down unexpected paths, and about relying on your faith. God answers prayers and we just have to be open to the idea that He may not answer them exactly the way we prayed them!
This book is great if you have been divorced from a selfish man who found someone younger, had a difficult mother-in-law, cared for someone who is demanding, struggled with perfection and/or aging, or been given a second change at love. It made me laugh, another important part of a good book.
It was pretty good. I think a bit predictable but still a good read. If you like something just to pass the time, it is a great read. Most of the characters are multi-faceted. I find the mother in law a little two dimensional but she starts being a little more multi-faceted by the end. It is easy to read and has some good humor.
I enjoyed this story about a recently divorced mother of a teenager who struggles in knowing God's will in the details of her life. She wants reconciliation with her ex-husband who is only interested in pleasing himself; but God uses unexpected circumstances to teach her to trust Him.
The author uses today's real-life situations in the lives of her characters which makes the book very readable. I wish Leana Ellis had been more explicit in dealing with faith in Jesus Christ as the only way to having a personal relationship with God. Some of the characters seemed genuine in their faith, but others seemed to just use prayer in times of trouble.

Kaye Redmond owns a business where she goes into people’s houses that are for sale and makes suggestions that will give the house a “facelift” so that potential buyers will buy.
Her husband has left her for a much younger woman, her teenage daughter has a major attitude problem, and her ex-mother-in-law is not her fairy godmother. In fact, the ring tone when her mother-in-law calls is the Darth Vader song.
But then things get even weirder. After a failed facelift, Kaye’s mother-in-law moves in with her. And Kaye dreams it will get her husband back and solve the problems with her daughter… instead a surgically enhanced mistress, an extra-large mutt, and a handsome client is added to the mix. How is she supposed to find her “happy-ever-after?”
I have read all of Ms. Ellis’ books and she is a hit or miss author for me. Some of them I have loved, such as Ruby’s Slippers and Lookin’ Back, Texas, and others I didn’t care for quite so much. FACELIFT is a miss for me. I understand Kaye wanting her husband back, but I just can’t believe that a business woman can be so clueless that she falls for everything her cheating ex-husband pulls.
However, FACELIFT is full of Ms. Ellis’ sharp prose, sarcasm, laugh-out-loud moments, and a romance. Fans of Ms. Ellis’ previous books won’t want to miss FACELIFT. And even if she is a hit-or-miss author for you, you still might want to give FACELIFT a chance. The writing is impeccable. $14.99. 320 pages.
I wrote this book not long after my father passed away. It was a very hard time for me, and I found it very difficult to write. At the time, I had a crazy labradoodle puppy. She was into a lot of mischief, but she helped me to laugh again. I began writing about her and found it easier to write. So I added her to Facelift, as the loveable Cousin It. So I am forever grateful to Hilo (my sweet labradoodle who I often refer to as the Hilo Monster on my Facebook page). I am also grateful to Hilo because she helped my father to laugh, when there wasn't much to laugh about during his final stages of cancer.
All Kaye Redmond, single parent and sole bread winner, really wants is her (now) ex-husband back. So when his mother's plastic surgery goes horribly wrong she wonders if this could be God's way of bringing them back together.
Facelift is an easy read and at times quite humorous. A love story of sorts, this book deals with some complicated issues surrounding divorce, relationships after divorce, and tragic loss. The reader should be aware that this book contains some mild sexual references to being "turned on" as well as awkward sex related situations. Overall a fairly clean adult read.
A good, clean romantic story. The main character bugged me a bit. She was such a wimpy push-over. I couldn't believe how she allowed herself to be walked all over. At least she started to get a backbone at the end. It was also a little overly-pious.
An enlightening book about how hard we try to hide our imperfections. God loves those imperfections because it allows Him to make us into what He sees.
