Found this in our Air BNB, honestly was very wholesome and Patterson speaks so sweetly of the natural world and is very technically sound with a camera. It’s fun to read things about setups of devices that you have no clue how to use and yet you can tell how loving this person was in trying to explain it. The pictures were very therapeutic.

1 star for text because there's really little to learn if you already have had a life of reading natural history books and some experience seeking nature photos on your own time. It's more of a memoir style, which wasn't why I tried the book, so the mixed expectations made me lose interest and get annoyed.
5 stars for the photos. There are a lot of "technical" nature photos out there. They have great subjects, lighting, and overall boldness and clarity. But they're boring. They have no personality. It's generic poster and stock fodder. But Freeman Pattern does what I do (but better): he has the interest and patience to capture the nuances of nature. He gets the moment a hawk catches something in the snow and leaves behind a snow angel and feather (talk about luck!), the white moth on a dark pond and lily pond leaf, the fresh flower stems with no flowers and still pushing through debris, and the abstraction of seeing through several leaves to focus on one farther back.

The Nature of Things
This was a great book to learn some cool techniques for taking photographs of outdoors, nature, and the environment.
I got a lot out of it during my short vacation.

don't waste your time. way too small of print (font). very few example photos. right one third of page is all margin. 2*
