My boyfriend Tyler gave me this for Christmas in 2010. I had told him that it was one of my favorite children's books and it still is, to this day. The watercolor illustrations are calming, delicate and enchanting, and all of the stories are beautiful. My favorites growing up were Grumley the Grouch, Young Kate, The Little Snow Maiden, and Snow White and Rose Red. Grumley the Grouch is about a grumpy badger who hates everything but then meets Brunhilda Badger who also dislikes things but also reminds him of things that are likable, like sundaes, soft shirts and breathing. It's a sweet and funny love story. Young Kate is a magical story about a young servant who is warned not to go to the meadows, the river, or the woods each time she asks, given a different reason each time. Finally Kate does do all three and magic ensues. The Little Snow Maiden is of course, the popular Russian folk tale about an old couple who, yearning for a child of their own, construct one out of snow and she mysteriously comes to life. Snow White and Rose Red is by the Brothers Grimm. This book was the first way I heard the story. I loved it especially because I have a twin sister and growing up we would pretend that we were the sisters (I was Snow White). I think the title confuses some people, however, into thinking that Snow White is the same from the other popular fairy tale. The story is about two sisters who live in a cottage by the forest and encounter a talking bear (a prince in disguise) and a dwarf. Later they break the spell on the bear and he turns into a prince, whom Snow White marries.
Overall, this is a wonderful collection of stories that will please children of all ages, male or female, and is a great introduction to fairy/folk tales.

I enjoyed this book of bedtime stories. Some I knew, and others were completely new to me. The illustrations are beautiful and fit the stories. This has been a favorite of my children for many years. I now am reading the complete book so that I can share with my new grandson.
