Billy Martin runs from home, burying his past in the quest for a future. He finds himself in Queensland’s spectacular Gulf Country, on the sprawling cattle runs. The Gulf breeds tough men and Billy is quickly drawn to the excitement and adventure of working with the fiery cattleman and ex-con Blake Reilly and his daughter, Jo. Billy finds mateship, danger and romance in the Gulf, but he also finds an untamed and violent land. In the brooding heat and unpredictable storms, the future he had sought unfolds – in ways as turbulent and unexpected as the country itself – and Billy discovers a place where he can at last belong.

I enjoy Kerry's books, she paints the outback so well, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as her others. This book was similar to one other I have read.

Kerry McGinnis remains one of my all-time favourites - her way of describing this wonderful country of ours, is like no-one elses and paints a vivid picture in my minds eye.

Drawn to read this from a review in Good Reading magazine, Wildhorse Creek tells the story of Billy Martin who runs from a damaged home at the age of 15 and finds himself in Qld's Gulf Country working with fiery cattleman and ex-con, Blake Reilly, and his daughter, Jo. Speckled with lively descriptions of the beauty and tragedy of the Gulf, McGinnis successfully intertwines the hard work of cattle runs and living in an untamed part of the world, with first love. Shunned by the locals, the Reilly's have always kept to themselves and looked after their own. But as Billy proves himself as a hard working and trustworthy cattleman, he finds himself breaking down the Reilly barrier and discovering his love for Jo. But how will their future unfold - will Billy find out that Jo is in love with him as much as he is with her? What fate will the unpredictable storms of the Gulf Country have on the locals and the Reilly's family bonds? Has Billy finally found a place where he belongs? Another great Australian writer and has lead me to track down her other writings - "Pieces of Blue" and "The Waddi Tree."

An interesting Australian story about the ruggedness and harshness of the outback of Australia, especially the Gulf country. It does not make life all pretty and romantic. It tells it like it is but in doing so it provides an understanding of the people who choose to make their life in the country. The book reveals why they love the land and the animals through thick and thin.

The first thirty chapters of this book were really slow. There were a lot of unanswered questions in the story and the romantic element was hardly satisfying and overall, mundane. A good representation of the Northern Australian climate and the challenges that come with life on the land.

It was an engaging story, I like outback adventures, my only disappointment was that the ending was a little anti climatic.
