This collection starts out strong but then contains several mostly disappointing stories until about midway, where the quality picks up. The pieces in the second half make it well worth reading. In many of these the drama of mystery and solution was secondary to some captivating and mind-stretching portrayals of characters and bizarre situations.

My newly discovered gems were: “The Last Open File” by Marcia Muller; “A Fine Set of Teeth” by Jan Burke; “The Last, Best Chance” by Suzanne Jones; “Accommodation Vacant” by Celia Fremlin; “Sic Transit Gloria” by Barbara Paul; “Fair and Square” by Margaret Yorke; and “Scars” by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

a Local bookclub got together to write mystery novels. This is the second one. They fall short for me, except that they are all set in Capitola a local beach town, that part is fun. I would only recommend this book if you were sitting on the beach for a day and needed a quick easy read, No real mystery there.
