George Lane writes both academic history (Early Mongol Rule in Thirteenth-Century Iran: A Persian Renaissance) and books like this one, designed for students -- even high school. As I've just seen him say in an article, "Over the past decade the world of Mongol studies has undergone a radical transformation and change in focus, reflecting an awareness of the injustices inflicted on the Chingizids' reputation and legacy." He is well a part of that, both as a researcher and a popularizer or educator. Hur-ah, as the Mongols used to say.

أسطورة حرق الكتب وماذا عن مقولة أن الكتب في بغداد أحرقت وامتلأ نهر دجلة منها حتى أصبحت الخيول تمشي عليها. هل هذا صحيح؟

كان في جيش هولاكو العالم المؤرخ علاءالدين عطا ملك الجويني. علاءالدين هذا صاحب كتاب فاتح العالم. ما دون في التاريخ الشامي والمصري عن المغول لا صحة له على الإطلاق. إذ ما يقوله المؤرخون عن الكتب وإحراقها غير صحيح، وهي موجودة الآن في روسيا وأوروبا وأمريكا. أما ما حدث بعد اجتياح بغداد حاليًا على أيدي قوى الإنجلوساكسون، فقد سرقوا كل شيء حتى معدات المستشفيات سرقوها. روسيا اجتاحت شرق العالم الإسلامي وبسطت نفوذها على ما يسمى اليوم بدول وسط آسيا الإسلامية. ثم جاء البريطانيون والأسبان والفرنسيون والايطاليون ونهبوا مكتباتنا في العالمين العربي والإسلامي. العراقيون اليوم يطالبون قادة القوى المعتدية عليهم باسترجاع ما سرقوه.

This book examines the entire Mongol Empire but its real strength lies in its examination the Ilkhanate, especially the early period. It's best read after David Morgan's book as much of that work is a direct challenge to Morgan's theories, so it's good to know what he's challenging. Amusingly this guy was David Morgan's student, and his book is heavily based on the PHD he submitted to him.
