I made it almost 10% into this short story before they said what they were forcing her to do.

Here's your backstory...Nikki is a cougar, Merrick is a wolf and Roane who is mentioned for about 2 pages is his brother and also wolf.
SPOILERS AHEAD... PROCEED WITH CAUTION AND DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU
So these Elders (not really sure who they are at this point) decree that Nikki must mate with either Merrick or Roane. Roane steps down, not wanting to fight his brother.
Now here comes some disturbing parts of this crap book.
Nikki changes forms, back to human and Merrick pins her beneath him while in animal form then proceeds to change. Now here is where some of you might be thinking... Awe how cute, so romantic they're going to have sex in the woods... Her body responds to him and she hates herself for it.
Let me repeat that again.
Her body responds to him and she hates herself for it.
One might think that eventhough they are attracted to eachother she would say no, or try to get away, or do any of the things that are normal when you don't want to have sex with someone.
BUT NOOOOOOOO.... They have simulated sex.
AND I QUOTE
"She tipped her head back and made a strangled sound in her throat as the ecstasy faded and reality came crashing home. The asshole just used her own body against her."
Merrick makes a I told you, you wanted me comment. Nikki gets all mad and then runs away...
*sigh*
At this point, in writing my review I have only read 15% of thisthing book. It will be a freakin' miracle if I can finish. As of right now I'm disgusted.

Oh Snap! She tries to run away, he chases her telling her to get on the bed. She steps back not wanting it, he steps forward towards the bed then basically tackles her, starts kissing her body and giving oral THEN he goes to undo his pants and FINALLY, FINALLY SHE SAYS NO. She's scared.

She's now teasing him after all that nonsense.

I finally finished this book and it still deserves the rating it got. The beginning of this was horrendous and I couldn't get past it. The end wasn't bad or rather the back half of the book, still couldn't make up for the front half!!

Cougar shifter and a big pack of wolf shifters in a sexy fantasy romance story.
Nikki is chosen to become the Alpha-female of the pack (weird choice for the Elders because she is the only non-wolf female, but we need something to push the story along so...) and she must choose between the two Alpha brothers whom ever wins her will become the next leader to the pack. Nikki already is attracted to one brother, Merrick so in a way he is probably going to be the leader, but Nikki doesn't make it easy.
There is a lot of sexy scenes so I had to put it on the erotica shelf, although the H/h are supposed to be all in love, I really didn't feel it as more then lust. I did like how the elders were smart enough to see that Nikki really loved (lusted?) for Merrick for who he is and not because he will be the Alpha King of the pack.

Highly erotic so I don't recommend anybody under 18 to read this but oh boy it was really good. I quickly fell into the storyline and could not stop reading until done!
Nikki has been chosen by the Elders to be the queen but she doesn't feel as though she is qualified...she's not even a wolf! She's a cougar! It's up to Merrick to convince her that not only is she qualified to be his queen but has all the qualifications she needs to share his bed!
The only time I put this down was to quickly turn on my air conditioner! Oh my gawd Merrick....that's all I can say!

Erotic sex scenes, a fight scene, betrayal, romance, kidnapping, shapeshifting.
I'm not going to go on or i will give away the book, and i reccomend people to read this one.

Fury (Otherkin #1) This book wasn't worth my time! The hero was a complete jerk, forcing himself on the heroine a couple of times, all because her body had a physical reaction to him. I don't like reading rape or almost rape scenes in my romance novels, so it never recovered from the horrible rating. To me, forced sex is not erotica! Deleted this book and all others of the author's works that I had from my Kindle library and will be avoiding her in the future.

Really good for an erotica story. Well written, sexy, great description of a shifters PoV, and I really liked the characters. I would have probably given it 4/5, except I generally prefer erotica on the side with a greater focus on plot.

MY REVIEW
Again I downloaded this one Free from Amazon. I should start by saying that I only read the words "shifter" "cougar" "Werewolf" "mate" and totally missed the "highly erotic" words. I readily admit that I usually avoid erotica as I like a "story" to my books not just steamy scenes. Having said that sure this one is erotica, there's no other way to describe it but, and it's quite a large but this book does have a story to it too. I love shifter books and the whole "true one mate" principal in books.
So the story is that Nikki shifts into a cougar when she shifts. She has lead a very solitary life and only came into her "shifts" later in life rather than at puberty like most shifter's. So when Nikki find the place called Fury that is home to many shifter's, she finally feels at home amongst her own kind.
Then the elders speak and declare her the alpha female, which means she will be the mate of the alpha male. Nikki must choose between the Nathy brothers, Merrick and Roane. Merrick is a large impressive white wolf, and Roane an equally impressive black wolf.
Nikki and Merrick have always felt drawn to each other. Nikki does not wish to be Alpha nor choose a mate form the Nathy brothers so she attempts escape. She is cornered by the brothers, Roane walks away leaving the way clear for her and Merrick to become mates. the problem is Nikki doesn't like being told what to do, a tussle ensues but she escapes. Merrick however is not a man nor wolf to take no for an answer, so of course he follows Nikki in order to keep an eye on her and protect her. He plans to wait for her to come around to the idea in her own time, but can he really stand by so close to her yet not be with her?
Roane is kidnapped which of course means that Nikki and Merrick are forced to return to Fury. Do they rescue Roane? Is he already dead? Who and how was he taken? There's a traitor in the pack who is it?
Then Nikki has to go through the ancient tradition of the naming ceremony. The tradition allows any female in the pack to challenge her to a fight. Sure that may sound fair until you remember its Nikki/Cougar against a large famale/wolf! Nikki could die! Will she be contested? Who will fight her? Who will win? You need to buy the book guys....
So did I enjoy this book? Oh, YES! Would I recommend? Yes BUT Being a responsible mother and blogger only to over 18's please. Will I read more of this series? Yes even though I "don't read erotica" there is plenty of plot in these books to make them worth reading to me and my taste in books. Would I read more by Anya Bast? Defiinitely!

This is an example of a story where the concept was really good, but the execution not so much. The story starts off with Nikki (heroine) running away from two males and the impending responsibility of becoming alpha female to the Fury pack (town full of shifters, not just werewolves but were cats, too, of which she is one). Now, when they catch her, the two males, Roane and Merrick, brothers, apparently just decide that Merrick should have her and the plot settles into a nice 'lust at first sight' kind of 'let's just screw' sort of thing. In and of itself, the start isn't bad. Merrick wants her for his mate and as such intends to take leadership of the Fury pack. All of a sudden, halfway through the book, just when you think you're getting to the end of the story, a second separate plot rears its head with the introduction of a rival-town pack and the kidnapping of Roane.
I would almost have rather this been two stories. It certainly reads that way with the sudden shift between plot A and plot B being very jarring. The story telling itself was a little rocky and the numerous sex scenes all start off fairly hot and steamy, but then fizzle off as if the author a.) didn't know how to finish the scenes and so just wrapped it up, or b.) got bored with her own sex scenes and did whatever she had to to quickly wrap them up. There were some pretty consistent formatting errors all the way through the story and it could use some editing. Mostly, I wish the author would have slowed down in some places, gotten a little more comfortable writing the sex, and either separated out the plots into two short stories or mingled them a bit better.

A free short story ..Review of Fury by Anya Bast I have finally come to the point where I have overloaded the kindle. As I was going through the kindle library I discovered this book. Turns out this is free on Amazon if you are interested.
This is a super short story I think I read it in about thirty minutes. Nikki is a were leopard..cougar??... some kind of cat I forget anyway the elders have decided she should become the alpha female to the Fury pack who all appear to be werewolves. There is a catch and that is she is supposed to choose between the two brothers Merrick and Roane and the guy she chooses will be the pack leader or alpha. Well Nikki cannot deal with the stress so she leaves and the story goes on from there.
The book is not bad but it feels like there is no beginning and no real end and we are reading along in the middle of the book. There is a lot of sex and some of it seemed a bit pointless. It is a decent read hell it is a free read. Did I love it no but it was a fun way to spend thirty minutes or so. I think the world is interesting and I hope she flushes out the story more and makes it a novel.

The first books I read by Anya Bast were her Elemental Witches series so I already knew that these would be hot and they are. The Otherkin is a (two-part so far) series about shifters. Fury is about Nikki, a cougar shifter, who has been told that she has been chosen to be the Alpha Queen of the Fury pack and that Merrick, the Alpha King, is to be her mate. Although Nikki has felt a very strong attraction to Merrick ever since she moved to Fury, she runs away - both from the attraction and the responsibility. Can Merrick convince her to return?
I loved this story but just wish it had been longer. I could certainly lose myself in Fury for a full length novel, if not series. There is a question placed in the book about a spy which is not answered so I am hoping that more will be given.
If you want a short, hot, shifter story then definitely give this one a go and not just for the fact that it is free.

I want to say I really loved this book - it was really good - But I think I'm missing the main idea - I'm not sure which of her books go with the "other kin" shifters, but I think I need to find out. I really did enjoy this book though.
Learning about Nikki and Merrick's story - Nikki was forced into becoming the Alpha Queen of Fury - the only problem is she has to Mate with Merrick - since he's suppose to be the Alpha King - Oh and lets' not forget , Merrick and his Pack are Wolves - where as Nikki is a Cougar, which does complicate things a little - at least where Nikki sees things.

So I'd never officially read an ebook before and found this one randomly through the kindle for free. And since it was an author I was familiar with I figured why not.
This is a short story and very erotic. There are a few typing errors that I across but nothing too major.
Over all this a nice quick read with very nice "steamy scenes". I kinda wish it had been longer just so we could have gotten a better background story of Nikki and Merrick.,.but I suppose the whole point of of the story was for them to have lots of sex. Which i'm not totally complaining abut but I enjoyed the storyline and concept and would have liked more.
So I'm left with question....what kind of babies will they have? Puppies our kittens? I'm very curious.

Over all this a nice quick read with very nice "steamy scenes". I kinda wish it had been longer just so we could have gotten a better background story of Nikki and Merrick.,.but I suppose the whole point of of the story was for them to have lots of sex. Which i'm not totally complaining abut but I enjoyed the storyline and concept and would have liked more.
So I'm left with question....what kind of babies will they have? Puppies our kittens? I'm very curious.

I have a million books I have downloaded on my Kindle. Over the summer , I am trying to get them all read.
I liked this book. Super fast- paced and straight to the point. This book does not give too much background to the characters or the situation, a steamy shifter book.
Adult topics and mature language.
Nikki is a shape shifting cougar who finds and embraces a new life , a new family .... wolves. Merrick and Roane , alpha male brothers begin to court her. Merrick is her chosen mate , sex right away . :P. Nikki becomes Alpha Queen , and Roane leaves town so no arguments so power.
Merrick , ironically , I did not care for as a character... lol,,, a little too pushy.
Overall fun, light, sexy read

I'm kind of tired of the "kicking ass and taking names" women, but this one was pretty whimpy. Nikki is chosen by a counsel to be queen and I guess being mate to the alpha werewolf is part of the job. The only problem is, she's a cougar shifter. The short story starts with a kind of adult hide and seek, with Merrick's brother bowing out. Nikki's not sure she's right for either job so she takes off. Merrick finds her and brings her back. There's some rival pack problems, someone in their pack is a spy and where is Rhoane going to go now, because I guess once Merrick's mated he can't stay. This was an okay story.

Short, steamy read...and it was free! Enough of a story to leave you wanting a bit more that you would continue the series, although I wish it had been a tad longer. At one point the story moves from one scene to another, and momentarily I was confused thinking I had skipped a page. The transition could have somewhat smoother, but the writing was good, over-the-top HOT and I want to read the next novella, Tranquility, which is also free. Thanks Ms. Bast!

I've heard great things about this author, but this was my first foray into her tales. I liked the story, but it seemed a little under edited. There were mistakes I just didn't expect from an author that was so prolific. Regardless I will try out some other of her books, as I think she is a pretty good story teller.

WOW! This one hit the ground running (literally and figuratively) and didn’t let up the sexy times for most of the book. I was surprised to walk about feeling that there was enough story and world building that it worked.

Pretty much drooled over Merrick. This was a great short story. Even better that it was free. The ending left a question open about who was the spy? Hopefully in the next one that will be reveled.

Blessedly short and utterly pointless
Why do I keep forgetting how bad these books are? Because as bad as they are they aren't among the worst I've ever read. The sec is mundane sex with a large sized guy. It's all about how big he is and how it slightly hurts but she loves it. And that's the point of the book. No plot, heck this one didn't even nod at one. Minimal world and character building and atrocious pacing. I once read a Bast book where they confronted the villain killed him in one page and had sex on the wall next to his dead corpse. The confrontation was over in two pages and the sex took up the rest of the chapter. I like erotica, but there has to be something redeeming about it--either the sex, story, or plot. And with this whole series there's nothing.

This short book feels like it is set in an already established world, with some very established characters, but if they exist I don't think I've encountered those books before.
This book picks up with Nikki, a cougar shifter in a wolf shifter territory. She's somehow ended up being picked as the mate to one of the ruling brothers. Based on Merrick's apparent interest in her, his brother steps away, only to have Nikki run and hide from the responsibility (and her attraction). There some smutty goodness, some kidnapping, some rescuing, some fighting, but we ultimately get a HEA, if a little rushed in both the rescue and the romance department. I'm not sure where book 2 will go, but we didn't really meet anyone enough to feel fully invested for another installment.

Free book I picked up on a whim. Kinda glad I didnt buy it- at least not full price.
The book is not meant for young readers. There are some naughty bits that I think would pink the cheeks of most readers.
The story has potential to be more then a novella. There is action and naughty bits like any good fantasy based book has.

I think the best parts were the down and dirty scenes between Merrick and Nikki. I do like short stories, so this fits into my favorite category. The only reason this wasn't a max rating was that I wasn't emotionally invested in the story. That's not to say this wasn't truly a good read. I'm curious to see if the MCs would eventually find the traitor in the mist.

Short read but I did like the shifter story of Merrick and Nikki. There were a few typos but they didn’t detract from the story. I’ve actually read a few other books from this authoress and I think I’ll continue following her.
