Amy Parrish was the one person that Jesse McCord ever let in. But when she left with no explanation, Jesse closed himself off, focusing only on his family’s ranch. Except now Amy is back, tending to a sick father and offering to help Jesse find the illusive McCord gold, a legendary tale of hidden treasure passed down in the McCord family for generations. With Jesse’s grandfather passing away before telling of where he’s searched for the gold, his two prodigal cousins returning to the ranch, Amy back in his life tearing at his heart, and an unseen enemy closing in and threatening their lives… Jesse is about to lose his sanity.
There are three criticisms that stood out to me while reading the book. One, it is never mentioned what Amy’s father is sick with, though cancer is implied. Two, the mystery element wasn’t really introduced until halfway through. And three, Jesse seemed to forgive Amy rather swiftly. None of these things deterred me from reading, but were more observations.
This is the first of Ruth’s books I’ve read, though I did, of course, recognize the name. It’s no surprise how she’s captivated audiences for as long as she has. Ruth writes with an elegance rarely seen anymore, with imagery in her setting as her strongest suit. You really get a feel for where you are and who you’re reading about. Without dumping it on the reader, you’ll learn a lot about ranching and Montana while reading this book. The secondary characters really stand out, from an eccentric Aunt Cora, a sly Cal, or the two displaced cousins, Wyatt and Zane, they add to the story nicely. I like that the hunt for treasure will continue in the next two books, Montana Destiny (Wyatt’s story) and Montana Glory (Zane’s story). A great book about life, love, dreams, and coming home again. Recommended!
Montana Legacy, is the first book in R.C. Ryan’s McCord cousins trilogy. And while I’ll be waiting until November to find out what happens in the third book, I can tell you all about book one here.
Jesse McCord has been living on the Lost Nuggest ranch all his life. It’s a huge operation and he loves it to death, just like (most) of his ancestor’s did. But Coot, his grandfather, has just passed away and now it seems that the family is about to get back together. Jesse’s cousin’s are coming home for the first time in over a decade, and he’s not happy about it. They were close growing up, left unwillingly because of their parents, and it took a death to bring them back. During the funeral for his grandfather Jesse see’s a familiar face, Amy Parrish, which only helps to throw him off balance even more.
With Amy back, his cousins back, and a renewed effort to find the McCord gold that Coot died searching for, Jesse’s sure got his word out for him.
The first thing I have to say is this, Coot apparently made himself a nice fortune with his ranching. During the reading of his will I found myself going, “Goddamn!” I had no idea that there was that kind of money in ranching, or perhaps there isn’t, that was creative license at work, and I’m just looking to deep into it. I will say this though, I work on a farm – we might not do animals – and we definitely are not making that kinda bank.
What it really comes down to, I actually really liked this book. I was wondering who the behind the scenes bad guy was, and even though it makes sense after finding out, I really just didn’t think to considering that person while reading.
I also like how Coot thought to bring his grandson’s back together after his death. He gave them the incentive to rebuild the relationship they shared as kids. It was certainly tough going at first, but that’s what makes it realistic and what makes me like the story.
And now the good stuff. The love and romance of Jesse and Amy. While a certain aspect of their failed relationship might have reminded me of The Notebook, I still really like the two of them together. Sometimes relationships work out and sometimes they don’t. And sometimes it will, but its just not the right time. That’s essentially what happened with Jesse and Amy, while they were together as teens, the separation came, and then it went. There were very real strains on the relationship too, Amy’s fathers illness and his blatant dislike of anything to do with the McCord’s, which is another reality, or plus factor.
Bottom line? I enjoyed reading Montana Legacy. A bit of romance, a bit of suspense, a lot of western and cowboys. This one’s going in my win column for a cozy day read.
The McCord cousins were closer than brothers when they lived on their grandfather's sprawling cattle ranch in Montana. It was a working ranch and prosperous but the family's legacy also included a long lost treasure in buried gold. This treasure which was generally regarded as the McCord curse because of the obsession that fell on the different generations - each trying to find what had long been buried and lost.
The day of Gabriel McCord's funeral was painful for everyone, but particularly hard on Jesse McCord. Of the three grandchildren, he was the one who had stayed on the ranch with his grandfather. Aside from the deep loss, he dreaded having to deal with his cousin who never bothered to keep in contact or drop in to visit them over the years. There was his cousin Zane McCord who moved to California when he was a child. Zane stayed out West and became a famous actor in his own right, but never once reached out or came back to visit. Then there was Wyatt, whose parents took him traveling. Even after the accident that killed them, Wyatt continued on his travels - working on ships, all sorts of jobs in far off places - but never headed home. As Jesse, Wyatt and Zane find themselves living on the ranch together, they slowly adjust to their shared responsibilities and rediscover their old friendships. The friendship between the cousins is one of the interesting subplots of Montana Legacy. It's clear that R.C. Ryan intends to give each of the cousins their own fleshed out stories - their banter and camaraderie certainly adds to the fun of Montana Legacy.
The novel centers on Jesse and Amy Parrish, his longtime and long lost love. It's clear from the start that they're both still attracted to each other and that they still care about one another, but it isn't until the very end of the novel that we learn what has kept Jesse and Amy apart for years. Montana Legacy has twists and turns, a mystery and danger - as well as a fun, satisfying romance.

Love, danger and gold rush fever make for a winning combination!
Jesse McCord knew from birth he was a cowboy who loved the open spaces and hard work on his family ranch. Growing up with his cousins and the grandfather he adored made the life worthwhile everyday he came home tired and weary. But his cousins had left young and some hard feelings were developed but now they are back after their grandfather’s untimely death and the reunion is bittersweet. The other person back in his life is Amy Parrish, his first and only love. She came to care for her father but they are both crossing paths with one another and fighting off the passion that drew them together as young adults and it is as uncontrollable now as it was before.
Jesse works through the troubles of having his cousins back to share the responsibility of ranch life added to the hatred Amy’s father feels towards him but resolves to work out past hurt and despair to move forward with Amy in his life. Adding to all this emotion the secret search for the gold their grandfather spent his life seeking is back on everyone’s mind. Old notes his grandfather had written show up and town gossip is stirring up the fact that there is gold in the hills and the cousins plus Amy may just be able to find it with fresh eyes, new thoughts and modern technology.
But along the rocky path to finding their relationship Jesse and Amy discover someone does not want that to happen and one near death experience after another haunts Amy distracting everyone from the search for gold. Could it be that someone is trying to harm Amy to get back at Jesse, but why he has enemies but nothing worth killing over or is there something no one is aware of stirring up the troubles they are fighting off.
If this book is any indication what the next two will be I can’t wait to read them. The action never stops and when you are drawn into the story you find yourself unable to stop reading. This was a start to finish in one day book because only stops for snacks are worth putting this book down.
This was a very quick, fun read. Take three good looking cousins, a hidden treasure, a long ago love lost, and a mystery - and you have Montana Legacy. I enjoyed the way this story played out - and while I thought that I had the mystery figured out - I had it all but the key player. It was fun to be wrong and be surprised!
The cousins are reunited on the ranch when their grandfather, Coot, passes away. Jesse was the only one who had remained there his entire life. Wyatt and Zane had moved away as teenagers with their parents. It had been many many years since they had all been together on the ranch - the place where they used to be as close as brothers. In Coot's will, he gives them the option of taking $500,000 and leaving - or staying and looking for the treasure that has had generations of McCords looking for it - and being able to have a share in it if it is found.
While Jesse figures they will take the money and run, they decide to stay. They had both been wandering the world anyway, and believed the ranch was the one place they could truly call home. Slowly the cousins start to make their way back to each other, but it going to take a lot for them to regain the relationship they had when they were young.
Jesse is wrangling with another relationship at the same time - one with Amy Parrish - the daughter of his next door neighbor and the oldest enemy of the McCords. Amy is back in Gold Fever to take care of her father, who, because of illness, has to undergo a series of treatments (it never mentions cancer - but that is what I think you are supposed to believe). Amy and Jesse were once young lovers - the electricity still seems to be between them, but they both are playing it cool. When she joins in the search for the treasure, another menace appears that might keep them apart forever.
There are two more books coming in this series - Montana Destiny is due out in May and Montana Glory in November!
If you're looking for romance and a great story about life on a ranch then this is the book for you.
Written by R.C.Ryan "Montana Legacy" is a story about the McCord's, all cousins, who inherit a large ranch in Montana when their Grandfather dies. The story revolves around the protagonist, Jesse McCord who never left the ranch and has always lived there. All three cousins grew up together on the ranch and two left for personal resaons but are reunited when they return home for the funeral. All three must learn to work together to get along because the grandfather left each of them a piece of the ranch and he also left them a fools mission to find the missing treasure that he has hunted for all his life that is hidden somewhere on the ranch.
The book is a page turner. It is an adult love novel that is written in third person and the landscape scenery is breathtaking.
Ryan's writing is very elementary. If I wrote a book, I fear this is how it would read...choppy with little development of the characters and situations. I expect romance novels to follow a recipe, but this was too formula for my taste.
“Life’s all about the road ahead. What’s past is past. Here’s to what’s around the bend, boys.”
Love this quote. Coot, the grandfather, dies. The young cousins who used to live with coot all come back for the funeral. Only Jesse stayed on at the ranch with his grandpa. There are many hard feelings between them, as they used to be best friends as children. Jesse hates them for leaving. Coot was a treasure seeker. Somewhere on the property is gold left by his ancestors. Now he is gone, the cousins decide to look for it. A series of threats to their neighbor Amy who Jesse loves brings the 3 cousins together.
Three Grandsons have inherited the family ranch and the search for the McCord gold. Jesse is the grandson that stayed and worked the ranch while the others left with their parents with they got tired of the hard work and away from crazy Coot McCord. He had given up on ever finding the gold but he did find Amy Parrish who had left him but she came back and wanted to help him find the gold. Good read
MONTANA LEGACY is R.C. Ryan first book of the McCords series. Jesse McCord devoted his life to the family ranch, trying to forget the woman who left him without a word. Now she is back, offering to help him to fin the McCord gold, but he doesn’t want to give her a second chance. R.C. Ryan takes her readers on an exciting adventure into the wilds of MONTANA LEGACY where under the wide prairie skies, a dangerous, unseen enemy is fast closing in, threatening Amy and Jesse’s very lives.
What a great book. And it’s a series woo hoo. The characters were wonderful as was the storyline. There was romance, intrigue and a really happy ending thanks.
I totally loved the story, the characters and the cozy feeling this wonderful novel gave me while reading it! Can't wait to go on with volume 2!

Jesse McCord and his cousins have heard the stories that supposedly there is a fortune in McCord gold to be found. There grandfather searched for years but never found any as did many of the other generations, until the stories were regarded more as just that stories.
Amy Parrish left a long time ago. When she did, she took Jesse’s heart. She has now returned. Jesse isn’t sure he wants to give Amy another chance but he can’t deny the feelings he still has for her. Will Amy and Jesse finally have the happy ending they wish for?
Montana Legacy is book one in this trilogy. I thought this book was a pretty good start to this trilogy. Amy and Jesse’s relationship was more on the sweeter side. While there were some good moments in this book, there wasn’t anything that really jumped out at me and kept my interest going full speed. I do have to admit that this is a quick read, even though I couldn’t fully get into this book as much as everyone else seemed to enjoy it. The setting for this story…Montana ranch with hot cousins is enough to make me willing to give a second chance to RC Ryan and check out Montana Destiny, the next book.
this book should go along with the saying-"dont judge a book by its cover." i got this book mainly because of the cover,i admit it. and i also was interested in it because of the whole 'cowboy' thing and the 'McCord gold.' this book just proves my opinion on the whole 'modern cowboy' thing.i think true cowboys kind of died out in the 1800s. &they didn't even find in the gold in here..or if i remember things correctly, they didn't even look for it. -this is one of those boring authors who arent funny.&who writes plots that arent exciting.like her dad was sick or sumthin.&she was a teacher.blah blah blah. &this is one of those authors who brush over the whole "romance part" and say things like "they soared to new heights" &ur sittin there thinkin wth?! just write it out.this is a romance book 4 goodness sakes! &then the girl is like i bought this bra as a present for myself when she got her new teaching job.or w/e it was.that was so stupid.you can buy a bra any day of the week. i wish the book was as good as the cover.
I won the second book in this series through First Reads and figured I should read the first one first. Montana Legacy was a solid western romance with a few plot twists and a mystery that kept it interesting and kept me reading. It's a very PG-13 story with nothing too racy between Amy and Jesse; a lot of the focus is also on the three cousins (Jesse, Wyatt, and Zane) and the family recovering after the loss of Coot the grandfather (I'm not giving anything away here--the story opens at the funeral). I'm interested to read the second book, Montana Destiny, and see what enfolds for Wyatt and the family.
I thought the premise of this series sounded cute and decided to give it a try. Though I enjoyed the basic storyline and felt the romance had potential, there were a lot of mistakes throughout that marred my enjoyment. I'd say a lot of them were editing issues, though some were issues with writing itself.
My main complaint was the head-hopping. I don't think I've read a book that had more POV switches. On one page early in the book we were in 7 different character's heads. It was hard trying to keep up.
Jesse McCord grew up on the Lost Nugget ranch in Montana raised by his grandfather Coot McCord. Legend has it somewhere on the Lost Nugget is a fortune in good lost by a past generation so Coot spend his whole life searching for it. Amy Parrish grew up on the ranch next door and has returned home years later. Jesse and Amy where high school sweet hearts and if they want to make a go of it now they have to work out what happened in the past. Very good, believable story. The author does a good job of telling the story making you hope there is more to follow with Jesse's cousins.
I hate it when one half of a couple calls the other half "baby." There are SO MANY possible pet names out there, why does anyone have to infantilize their significant other? Some people can pull it off, but they are few, far between, and not in this book. It doesn't happen often, but it's among the most memorable bits of this book. My other complaint is how Ryan will use a peripheral character's perspective for, like, half a chapter and never return to it. But maybe I'm just nit-picking. I do that sometimes...
I'm so glad I won this book from the Goodreads contest. It was a nice, romantic modern western. I thought the storyline was good and I loved the three cousins. What girl doesn't enjoy reading about three sexy cowboys?!?! I wish there would have been a little more to the treasure hunt plot, but I know it will come into play in Zane and Wyatt's books. Will Aunt Cora find true love with Cal? I hope so. Can't wait to read book two!
I started and finished this book the same day. I didn't want to put it down. This book has a good plot line from romance to mystery.
Jesse McCord loved his Grandfather Coot and the land they lived on. Now the woman he loves came back into town and he has to wrestle with his feelings for her. When accidents starts happening and Amy is in danger, what happens next?
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance and mystery.
Montana Legacy is the first book in a trilogy that centers around the hunt for a lost fortune in gold. When his grandfather dies, Jesse McCord finds himself taking up the old man's hunt for the missing McCord gold. Aiding him in his quest is his old flame, Amy Parrish, and all their old feelings quickly return -- as does a new threat. This contemporary romance has a great Montana setting and western vibe.
This book was pretty decent. I read this one since I was informed i needed to read it before "Montana Destiny" (which i won in firstreads)in order to understand everything that was going on. As romance stories go, this one wasn't that bad. Aside from one (and only one) rather risque scene about 2/3 of the way through the book, the rest of the book was just good storyline, which I liked. I'm curious to see how the search for the family gold plays out in the next book.
This was a really good book. It's hard for me to find books with female lead characters I like. I liked Amy. I thought I had this book figured out, and then EERRRR! not! Its not often I'm wrong, so when I am, I am pleasantly suprised! Great read. I cannot wait to read the other two books in the series.
It has been awhile since I have read a ruthiebabe book, but was looking forward to starting this new trilogy. Loved it. Lots of action, and handsome men, and strong women. And now, hours until work is done, and nothing on hand to read!!!!
