Girl in the Shadows

Rate this book
Long after midnight, Amanda was awakened by strange noises coming from the tower room. They were faint at first, then grew louder, and were much like those made by someone crying in the night...Amanda does not want to go back. She would not have returned to the looming mansion at all, except that Madame Bonheur's will was to be read, and Amanda was to inherit the money.

I read this in elementary school & loved it. I got it through scholastic books. I’m hoping to find a paperback of it to give to my daughter.

2.5*

Another interesting concept with a very muddled execution. Characterizations flipped on a dime, but it was well paced with a somewhat satisfying end. I never did love the crazy lady trope though and this book had it in spades

If I could give this 2 1/2 stars I would - but three will do for the laugh factor. It's not as good as Miriam Lynch's Dark Magic ( that may not be saying much. ) But it's strength is in it's ability to capture the hoot-factor of gothic's - a heroine who is trapped in a moldy dungeon of a basement , a psychologically mute girl , a suspicious housekeeper , eerie crying in the night , and an inheritance at stake. Unfortunately, though it starts promising , as the inheritors gather, early at a summer mansion for the reading of their grandmother's will. The atmosphere is seeped in past mystery, featuring a Rebecca-like , villianous cousin who might've nearly drowned the mute girl and the matriarch grandmother who favored her. It quickly falls apart as the usual 'hauntings' take place. There is even an absurb puzzle of the mute girl attempting ( in the most bizarre fashion ) to tip off the heroine to the danger that lurks - with obscure music titles. The character's also draw attention to their idiot decitions by constantly admitting how could I be so stupid?! Convenience , honey - sheer convenience. I don't know why I loved these Windswept books so much when I was a kid. Maybe I was just too young to realize how badly they were written? Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for what I *thought* I loved. I don't remember reading this one in the early 80s though I am still on the lookout for the one I remember plot-wise but not the title.

I will continue to read the three others I have from this series and try to rebuild my collection from when I was a wee one.

The mystery part was much more satisfying than the romance which was pretty nonexistent.
