We discovered this book at our favorite aquarium bookstore. The illustrations looked interesting so we got it. Only after we started reading, we realized that it is supposed to be a handbook written by those aboard Nautilus submarine from 20,000 leagues under the sea. Along with learning some amazing ocean related facts, it was fun to read too. Read it with the ocean geek/obsessed kid and we both loved it.

Pairs nicely with "20,000 Leagues". Would be great to use as a study along with the book for kids, because I'm all about getting kids to read the classics, but I enjoyed this immensely as an adult too!

Meant for children. Still, I learned info about currents that I didn't know before.

Twist, C. (2010). The Oceanology handbook: A course for underwater explorers. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press.

Citation by: Ryan Fugitt

Type of reference: Handbook

Call Number: Ref 551.46

Content/Scope: This book follows a boy on his adventure around the world aboard a boat. This book presents information about sea creatures, how volcanos are formed, and other fun information you would learn about the ocean living on a ship. This book also includes maps.

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Candlewick Press is a trusted publisher and all reviews of this book are positive and loaded with praises of the information and the way it is presented.

Arrangement/Presentation: This book is written in a journal like style with vibrant illustrations and follows a young boy as he travels the world.

Relation to other works: Although the library contains many books about the ocean, it is lacking a book written in such an interesting way. Instead of just fact recall, this book presents the information in a way that would catch the readers’ attention.

Accessibility/Diversity: This book in intended for older readers, but can be used in a kindergarten setting because of all the vibrant pictures. At this point in the year, some of my students could read the names of the fish, but probably not the whole book.

This book worked great for our neighbors son. He is not a big reader. But he loves to learn. And here was quick insightful segments that caught his attention right off. No messing around here. But straight to the point with interesting facts. And the stickers in the back were beautiful artwork. I am glad I get to have time to dive into this one too!

Pretty nice. Quick and some actual information Inside. I wish it would go a little more in depth about sea animals and plants though.
