Every sewist has a stash of scraps. I keep mine in plastic bags and bins, file boxes and just stacked up in piles. That’s the reason I picked up Sewing Bits & Pieces. The subtitle is “35 Projects Using Fabric Scraps”. If ever there was a phrase that would prick up a sewist’s ears, that is it.
All of the projects in the book are unique and fanciful. They cover topics like “Kitchen” and “Party”. The projects are heavy on applique which isn’t my forte, so some of them I’ve skipped altogether, although I may come back to them at some point. My favorite is the Sunday Market Skirt. I’ve made several skirts using the instructions laid out there. The skirts are all comfortable and can be made over a weekend.
There’s a short introduction that covers techniques and tools. The projects range from beginner to advanced, though, so there’s the opportunity for a newbie sewist to make the easier projects and then level up to harder projects. The projects also lend themselves to alternatives. For example I made the scrappy silhouettes out of my daughter’s handprint for Christmas gifts to grandparents one year.
This book would make a great gift for a sewist friend.
Mostly little projects to make for kids, and nothing new or terribly exciting. There's only one pattern that I can see myself making at any point - the party lights...but even then, I would probably only make that for a special occasion or as a gift.
Very cute compilation with lots of variety. They assume a basic knowledge of sewing but aren't overly complicated at all. Funny but I thought the projects would be made using only small bits of scrap fabric, but actually every project requires large pieces of fabric with the addition of small bits, cut from another larger piece to be used to embellish the overall project. Not exactly what I was looking for personally, but it's a nice book full of cute quick sewing projects.
Fun, but nothing grabbed my attention until the Countdown chain made from fabric scraps--what a fabulous idea! Fun for a family with children when they're looking forward to something like a birthday or vacation. Eco-friendly in a couple of ways (using bits of fabric & saving paper repeatedly). Also, am I the only person in the universe who doesn't love yoyos?
*Also cute were the Dahlia pincushion & the picnic quilt.
Sewing Bits & Pieces is a sweet book that helps you use all those fabric scraps us sewists always tend to horde. There are quite a few adorable projects to keep you busy and help keep your stash from taking over your house. I particularly like the clam shell picnic quilt and the framed silhouettes using fabric, genius! I wouldn't mind owning this book!
Can't wait to do some of the projects from this book. So many cute ideas for using up scraps!! The only thing I don't love is that the patterns are attached to the book...I think it might be harder to trace...but we'll see.
Some cute ideas, but not really my style. Also, the photos were nice quality but a lot of them were super close-ups so it was kind of hard to tell what the whole piece would look like.
It has some cute ideas to use up your fabric scraps. I haven't done any of the projects, but hope they are not hard and the instructions are easy to follow
