13 stories. 12 cities. 3 continents. 1 voice... From Atlanta to Blackpool, London to New York; from Rome to Prague to San Francisco... from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Birmingham, Alabama, to Washington D.C. (citadel of the dead) to Hollyweird and the city of Lost Angels... all are cities of night. And the night is forever now.
I’m a fan of Philip Nutman’s Wet Work novel so I decided to dive into this collection of short stories. Definitely a mixed bag, but overall a interesting journey. Many of the stories deal with suicide (Memories of Lydia, Leaving hitting a little too close to home). Some of the stories have characters from previous stories. The stories range from strange (a guy haunted by the crocodile from Peter Pan, a kidnapped Elvis impersonator, a story told from the perspective of a writers soul trapped in painting) to ruminations about living, sex and death. There’s also surprisingly a short story about Van Helsing trying find some missing children and a Hellboy story about his encounter with La Llorona!
I felt the book was well worth the read, but not sure about it having any re-readability. A lot of that has to do with the depressing nature of the stories.
Highlights for me were: Full Throttle, Blackpool Rock, Ponce De Leon Avenue and Still Life of Peckerwood.
