This one didn't quite do it for me. I was expecting a Ray Bradbury Halloween Tree type story, and it did have hints of that but overall I just couldn't get into the stories. The art was decent but not enough to save the stories. It was okay, but far from a must read. Something was missing, but I'm not entirely sure what.

This looked a lot better than it turned out to be. I found all three stories to be rather boring... and is it just me or did the artwork in the second one seem to change nearly every page. That was weird.

The art style is neat (I really loved Asphodel's costume in the first story), but the stories weren't, in my opinion, exciting or captivating. But, at least the art was decent.

Didn't quite live up to my expectations of a Humanoids project, but was a nice little read. The first two didn't quite speak to me, although I'm sure I would have liked them as a kid, probably. The third story, though, was very touching and beautiful.

Halloween Tales (Comic)
Story 1 (Humanoids Kids) Everyone’s celebrating the dead and all in the spirit. Everyone that is except Asphodel whose just not feeling it. Plus, she really doesn’t see the point in celebrating the dead. That is until a mysterious girl in the ally tries to convince her of otherwise (in rhyme). The mysterious girl turns out to be the one she grieves for and leaves her with a message that she’ll always be with her.

My Thoughts: There’s great messages in this about accepting loss and moving on when you feel like you aren’t strong enough because the people you lose are still with you in spirit and heart. Then there’s the message about being who you and are and not letting people take advantage of your kindness. Or not being ashamed of who you are. Even though you might not consider yourself smart enough or enough. That people who pretend to talk a lot of junk about they’re this or that are just to put people down are just doing so to make themselves look big. But on the inside, they’re small. At first I looked at the characters and was thrown off because I wasn’t sure what they were. And they struck me as a little weird. And there’s a part in this where Asphodel calls the mysterious (girl-boy I’m not sure which it is). And I found that ironic because Asphodel is weird looking herself. So, it was like the pot calling the cauldron black. But then when you get past over all looks of the creatures it’s really a decent short story. (8)

Story 2: The Story of Joe
Plot: The PLL’s aren’t the only one’s with a secret. Joe takes Marie Beatrice or B to his secret spot on top of the roof and she meets his secret cat. But is that the “real” secret? A bat flies down (and from the looks of it) scratches Joe (as he’s bleeding). The cat disappears and Marie takes him to clean his wound. Joe visits his Dad at work and lies to him when he asks about the scratch. We learn that Joe feels neglected by his Dad because he works so much. Some bullies assault Joe with a rock and he runs off and hides. We find out from some neighbor’s that Joe is some what on the odd side. When Marie comes looking for him something eerie starts to happen his voice is migrating all over the dark room (and we see a bat like shadow on the wall). He pushes Bea away. Here it gets confusing. When Joe emerges his eyes look sinister and he’s seeking someone out. That’s not the only change. He can now leap buildings. The bullies spot Joe again, only this time he transforms (into a bat). Or did the bat just help him out. (VERY HARD TO TELL)! One minute he’s there, the next we see a bat, the next the bullies take off, then we see him with a bat’s overhead. Joe gets mad at his father when he’s only trying to comfort him and takes off. Bea find’s Joe and he tells her he wants to “give her a kiss” (aka change her) and swoops her up and carries her off. Surprisingly he leaves her alone when she tells him too and flies off. He flies to check in on his confused Dad (and he sees him) but since he can’t really tell him he’s a vampire bat he flies off again sadly. Joe and B reconcile after he finds her at his spot. She’s been coming there because it’s where she feels closest to him (ain’t that sweet?). His heartbeat is racing (um maybe it’s just from being next to her) but she’s concerned and promises he’ll see his Dad. But before he does here come these guys again. Only Joe is strong enough to hold off retaliation. (Smacks forehead) I mean Joe you can just SCARE them a tiny bit! He reconnects with his Dad and all is well!

My Thoughts VERY CONFUSING! The illustration on this is beautifully done in a a gray, white, and black foreboding, (Gotham-ish), monotone but it’s not very coherent to the story being told. There were parts of this that were unclear and you’re not sure what the picture is trying to imply. It actually reminds me a lot of BATMAN (which might not be coincidental). It’s not a bad story. I think its strength is showing how Joe’s struggle with the light and dark sides of himself and how the good side wins out. Just some parts were just a little unclear. Like was it showing his bond to the bats or can he actually transform into a real one? I did understand it a little better on second read tho. (71/2)

Story 3 The Book of Jack
A bunch of kid’s sneak up on a old house that’s supposed to be haunted. It looks like an initiation of some sort for a boy named Jack. Of course (like with every spooky old house) there are horror tales connected to it about people going in and not coming out (let’s call it the Bates house). One of them (Sam *a girl*) is concerned but Jack brushes it off and presses on. Stan (one of the gang) reminds him he has to take something out of the house to prove he went in. (Which is kind of stupid because they’re standing there and have eyes). A light leads him to the most GORGEOUS library on the Planant (and I die and have gone to heaven at the sight of it). He finds a book, picks it up, and leaves. Sam discovers the book is about Jack’s life, and the rest of the gang tease her for being able to read (or think she can). After being tested it’s determined that the book tells Jack’s life story as it happens. They decide to take it back, but they don’t know Stan is listening. When they wake up the next day just as suspected the book is gone. They take off to find Stan but Jack notices weird changes taking place in his body. Sam find’s the book in Stan’s hiding place and goes to find Jack (who by this time has completely transformed and is ashamed of how he looks). Sam tries to override the spell but it doesn’t work. So Jack goes to Stan and makes him tell him who originally wrote it. Sam tries to get the guy (Thomas) to write another spell but he slams the door on her and she’s attacked by wolves. Stan fights them off and Thomas suddenly has a change of heart. In the end all is well and Jack is turned back.

My Thoughts: This one reminded me A LOT of Beauty and the Beast, From Jack’s look, to Sam loving him anyway despite what he looked like. To the attack of the wolves on her.

I think I understand what the writer was trying to do here, but I just don't think it worked - which was a real shame.
The art was wonderfully stylistic, absolutely spot on for story set in amber-tinted autumn. The costume designs also yelled "vintage Halloween!" which I loved.
From the tone of the first few pages I thought I was going to get a proper Halloween tale of trick or treating, mayhem, and costumes but unfortunately that just wasn't it.

I'm sorry to say by two thirds of the way through I just didn't care anymore for the endless introspection. I'm really hoping that that next two volumes bring something more to the mix.

The three tales are enjoyable and a bit off the usual path of Halloween tales. I was hoping that the mummy shown on the cover would have more time in the spotlight, but it was relegated to the equivalent background supporting character that would be uncredited if this was a film. Oh well.

The art looked good, but the first two stories were not up to par. They were quite boring. The third story I liked, but it was not enough to save the book as a whole.
