Sarah Sargeant #2

The (Im)Perfect Girlfriend

Rate this book
We kissed until it became necessary to stop so that we could breathe, by which time my lips were so swollen it looked like I’d been pleasuring a brillo pad. We grinned at each other again and I felt the urge to utter something brilliantly intellectual.

‘Have I mentioned that I’m hopelessly in love with you?’

Actress Sarah Sargeant has finally landed the perfect boyfriend. But as she leaves London for LA, Sarah finds herself morphing from the perfect girlfriend, baby voicing 'i love you's, into a nutty one who throws phones and screams a lot.

Where did it all go wrong? Was it the photo of a semi-naked ex-girlfriend doing a downward dog she found in her boyfriend's filofax? Or maybe it’s the steamy sex scene she films with the handsomest man in the world, ever.

Laugh-out-loud funny and brutally honest, THE (IM)PERFECT GIRLFRIEND is the story of one woman’s search for her happy ever after. It is a novel that firmly establishes Lucy Anne Holmes as one of the best writers of romantic comedy today.

I am so disappointed in this book. I recommended several of you to read the first one, which was funny, cute, and had you rooting for Sarah Sargeant.

This one made me root against her... only for her to drop Simon. He was an ass, rude, and didn't give a shit about Sarah's feelings. And, I don't know why she would want to be with him after all that.

I like reading about strong women and she was weak and pathetic.

I really should be asleep right now. I've got to be up and out of the house in little over 5 hours, but once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. This sequel is just as good as the first book. In fact I am hoping there are more Sarah Sargent books on the horizon. This book was a little more serious than the first, but it was still enjoyable. But I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes of more stories with Sarah.

Considering I did not read the first novel I enjoyed this book and found it an easy read. You do not need to read the first book to understand this book. Was a great bargain for 50 cents in the charity shop.

Actress Sarah Sargeant has the perfect boyfriend and has just landed a movie role. As she leaves London for LA she finds a photo of her partner’s ex girlfriend (Ruth) - semi naked and in a downward dog pose - in his Filofax. Is this when she starts to morph from the perfect girlfriend into a nutty one?

Simon wants babies. Sarah isn’t yet ready to start a family. And then a pregnant Ruth walks back into their lives. Simon wants to do right by his unborn child leaving Sarah. A heartbroken Sarah is now back in LA filming. Whilst in LA she helps her friend Rachel, also the directors girlfriend, battle cancer as well as planning their wedding for them. Through it all she comes to terms with the end of her relationship with Simon.

At Rachel’s wedding Sarah’s world crashes with Simon’s new world where it is apparent to everyone except Sarah that Ruth and Simon are not happy together.

Whilst reading this book I didn’t realise that it was a sequel and I wouldn’t have either if I hadn’t put it into my goodreads app. The book started of well with a few laugh out loud moments and I took a quick liking to Sarah. I’m not sure when the book turned into a chore to read, but when I got through that part of the book it became easy sailing again to a rushed ending which I had mixed feelings about.

A part of me liked the fact that Sarah and Simon got back together as just because you have a baby with someone doesn’t mean that you should be with the mother/father of your child. On the other hand, I did not like the ending because after what Simon put her through, and how he treated her when they were together she decided to take him back.

I oohed and aahed about giving this book three stars as it had a good beginning and I love Holmes’ engaging writing. However, the fact that I did feel it was a chore to read and also the poo moment which to be quite honest was just too much let it down for me.

I think that my main issue with this book is purely just the fact we hardly got to see Sarah and Simon in a happy relationship at all, after all the pining he did in the previous book and waiting until literally the last pages to see them finally admit their love for one another, you'd think we'd get to see them be happy for at least a few chapters in this book, but no, history just repeated itself.
I don't think the Simon in this book matched the Simon in the previous, it was like she was dating a whole other guy. Which is actually just the start of the confusion with this novel...
Wasn't Eamonn doing a romance movie, not a thriller?
And how long had Simon and Sarah actually been going out if Ruth was still actually pregnant with his child?
I also found Sarah to be a little bit irritating at times, but over all, I think this was a fairly good read. The series has been fun and sweet, I just would of preferred to have a little bit more happy ever after than just in the last page of each book.

I thought the book started off really well and had some funny moments in it. The character of Sarah was amazing and fit into the story well, very believable. However, certain things (especially towards the end) didnt add up. For example, SPOILER ALERT..why would Rachel invite Simon, Ruth and Anna to her wedding knowing that would be awkward for her best friend, Sarah? It doesnt state in the book anywhere that Rachel was close to Simon. The ending was a bit rushed for me. When Sarah and Leo "break up", it didnt seem very realistic. Its a good read but not one of the greats.

She should have never forgiven that asshole.
I would have torn up that picture straight away at the airport. And if he didn't accept that, that would've been the end of it! She needs a backbone & a big dose of self-worth, STAT! Could've spared us all all the drama after that.
And that's all I have to say on the matter.

I loved this! Sarah is a fantastic character – mad as a hatter but has you rooting for her from the first page. Some scenes were laugh-out-loud funny but I bet Rachel’s wedding speech will squeeze out a tear. I want to know what happens next to all of them.

Inhalt (Klappentext):

This was so dated! In such a specific way too - it really felt like a Bridget Jones era book where the Undomestic Goddess (written a few years earlier I believe) simply did not. Writing was fine, plot had good potential, but the main character was insufferably qUiRkY and lacked the most basic shred of self-confidence. Obviously I know that many people lack confidence, but I feel that I as a person am totally over the whole 'the hot guy can't possibly like me because I have big legs and fall over things' garb from the early 2000s. Almost DNF but it was a 250 page chicklit book so it took like three hours to read anyway.

Probably didn't help that this is a sequel (that kind of works as a standalone), but I did not understand why the MC ended up with her ex who was (by all accounts in this book) dreadful to her (and to some extent her to him). It felt like listening to your old school friend you see twice a year tell you all about how their horrible on-and-off boyfriend did XYZ but he's promised to change now and you just have to grit your teeth and nod along.

I am a MASSIVE Lucy-Anne Holmes fan. Seriously, with this book, I've completed yet another author's collection (I have all of Sophie Kinsella's and Lindsey Kelk's). Man alive, this book has to be the Holy Grail. It's so impossible to get it unless you buy it online, which I couldn't because my bloody debit card isn't allowed for online transactions, what a piss take. I had to personally walk into Kinokuniya and order it, with the fancy receipt code and details. So, I ordered it in the beginning of April and it only arrived last weekend. Since I was finishing a book, I stormed into the book and got myself hooked!

The Imperfect Girlfriend is the sequel to Lucy-Anne Holmes's super hilarious and laugh-out-loud debut novel, 50 Ways to Find A Lover, which I enjoyed very much! (I gave it a 5/5!). I finished the book in 3 days and I got the lovely feeling of meeting an old friend who you were really fond of but she had to leave, that sort of feeling. Upon finishing the book, I was gutted because I realised, I wouldn't be able to get hold of another Lucy-Anne Holmes's novel until February 2013.

The book continues where 50 Ways to Find A Lover left off, Sarah and Simon helplessly and madly in love, appreciating each other's presence and clearly, being in love. I dare say, I found Sarah really, really real, as in you can easily relate to her, albeit her antics which will bound to go tits up, it's a pleasure to read how Lucy described everything through Sarah's point of view. Sarah, as usual was funny, quirky, witty, lovable and downright hilarious. (I have to praise as much as I could because I'm kissing Lucy's arse in order to get a review copy of her next book. Shhh!). To me, Sarah was somehow like Becky, what with her aloofness and tendency to over think things. Except, Sarah had a bigger bum and fantastic acting skills but terrible singing vocals. Minus the enormous mounting debt.

Besides Sarah, there was lovely Simon who was the perfect boyfriend, who doesn't care about Sarah's athlete's foot, who'd love Sarah unconditionally, even though she's a pillock, as self-proclaimed by her herself. Then there was her best friend, Julia who didn't make much of an appearance in this book, much to my chagrin, I thought her presence brought out Sarah's humour. To make up to Julia's absence, Lucy had made Rachel Bird, Eamonn's girlfriend and ex-convent mate of Sarah, her BFF in LA. I used to think Rachel was a bimbo with a string of sexcapades to her name, but she turned out to be an actual friend. Well, surprise, surprise! She was the one who saved Sarah's arse most of the time, pushing her to work harder for her role in Eamonn Nigels's film as "a stripper who gets raped and killed" by the ever gorgeous Leo Clement.

The pace of the story flowed very smoothly and was packed with many events, such as Sarah's trip to LA which went bust, then her steamy sex scene with Leo to a really, really lovely ending. Overall, I thought this was the perfect ending to Sarah Sargeant's story. Successful career, a man on her tow who loves her even though she's the imperfect girlfriend and a little happily ever after never hurt anyone, right? Follow Lucy on Twitter (@LucyAnneHolmes) or follow her "How to Start A Sexual Revolution" blog! Lucy's next book, When Mother Came to Visit will be out in February 2013. Ah, the wait, damn..

Originally reviewed on Words in a Teacup.

Sarah Sargeant, full-time actress and most-time waitress, has finally found the right man. Of course it has to go downhill when she leaves London for LA and finds a sexy picture of her man’s ex in his planner. She turns from snuggly to prickly in under a second and while she may not be able to sing (despite what her CV says), she’s certainly able to scream and proves just how batty she can be.

Let’s get straight down to business. This book made me happy. A lot of things make me chuckle and even laugh, I can smile at certain books and they may warm my heart, but I was genuinely happy while reading The (Im)perfect Girlfriend. Lucy-Anne Holmes is an amazing writer who really does make you laugh a lot, Katie Fforde wasn’t lying on the back cover of Holmes’ newest book.

As you can see from the title, this book is the second in a series, which I hadn’t known at the time when I started it. Didn’t matter though, because I felt like I wasn’t missing out on any information at all. (We will see how I feel when I finally read the first book, maybe there was something really blatant that I missed?) The main character is delightful and I want her to be my friend for really selfish reasons such as a wallowing-partner and also feeling better about myself. Sarah’s a mess even at the top of her game, but that’s what I adore in her. She’s no perfect birdie with legs a mile long and hair curling just so, nope. She’s simply a mess and I love it.

The writing was entertaining from start to finish, I loved Sarah’s thoughts and unabashed foot-in-mouth-ness and her general attitude towards her problems, because I could really identify with that (I may be an adult in numbers, but let’s be real, I’m a twelve-year-old). But despite her being completely batshit, she’s a wonderful human being who ends up being there for her friend when she really needs it and I think that just made me love her even more. Aside from Sarah there is a host of fabulous characters in it and I loved them all (except perhaps for Simon, who mostly just makes me squint and angrily stare at the book).

The author did a great job with everything she touched upon in the book — from the more squicky adventures involving plastic bags to the serious topics that usually make me run and cry because I can’t handle them, I enjoyed it all without problems. The one thing I wasn’t really down with was the end because it just didn’t match what I wanted to happen. It didn’t come as a surprise, but I would’ve preferred a different end, because this one makes very little emotional sense to me.

Still though, I was delighted and happy, so four and a half teacups it is. :D

This book tries to hard to be funny for the sake of if. It does have a few funny bits, but the rest just seem like it's trying to hard. I did consider giving it up on it, but powered through - not sure how that makes me feel. Overall, a meh book.

I really enjoyed this book, it was funny and it had a good plot. Sarah was a good character to have in a book like this, although after a while her swearing became a little tiring and I started to find her quite frustrating. The book had many good twists in it pulled off very well (even if they didn't make sense at times) however I felt that sometimes the book was a little disjointed, especially towards the end.

At the end it just seemed a little rushed and just thrown together. What would make it better was if there was an epilogue at the end to tie up all the lose ends. Like if she stayed together with the one she chose or if it all just went wrong, and if things worked out for Rachel. There was no hint to there being any sequel but with the way it ended it didn't seem impossible.

Fantastic book but the ending left me slightly disappointed.

From one of the best to possibly one of the most mind-numbing chick-lit books I have ever read. The laugh out loud humour in the beginning lulled me into a false sense of security because by halfway it was comparable to reading the script of a really bad soap opera or reality TV show*. It took such a sheer amount of effort to complete it that I didn't even wish for it to get better. I just wished for it to end. I really enjoyed her debut novel but this one missed the mark entirely.

*{SPOILERS} All the 'characters' have to be on set regardless of their relationship to one another (Simon/Ruth<=>Rachel), theres always another hot guy conveniently present after a breakup (Leo), they develop seemingly close relationships with the most random strangers (Brian) and the true best friend is never on the show (Julia).

3,5 stars.
It was much, much better than "50 ways..." but not SO my kind of book. OK, it was a good laugh sometimes, and there were some twists in it, very good pulled together, but some of the situations were just too ridiculous and IMO not possible to happen and I really don't think we need so much swearing in one book. Apart from swearing, it was written with a very easy and flottering language and some of the comments were hilarious.
The better part of the book was too slow for me, then it fastened at the end, and the end was too flat for me.
It was a good read, but not one of the greatest.

I loved Sarah. She was everything I want to be, funny, jealous when necessary, cheeky, cool but made mistakes that were hilarious. Julia and Rachel were the perfect best friends too. Simon was a good, equal combination of God/twat at the same time which was emotional trivial but in a good way. And don't even get me started in Leo, Leo was described by Holmes as basically the ideal man and what I loved was he doesn't turn out how I expected which was a pleasant surprise. Without giving too much away I kind of wanted it to end differently but I did enjoy the ending. 4 stars from me.

I haven't yet read the first of these books but I enjoyed this one. It took me a while to get used to the very chatty style but I soon warmed to the main character. There were many funny, laugh out loud moments. It was a very enjoyable read. I liked the coming together of all the characters at the wedding in the end, though I did wonder why Simon was invited - I wasn't sure what his connection was to the happy couple. A small point as I generally enjoyed the story... Strike that I've now read the first, it helps if you read the books in order haha!

I didn't realise that this was the sequel to Lucy-Anne Holmes' '50 ways to find a lover' when I started reading the book. However, if like me you haven't read the first you can still read this and follow what's going on and know what's happened in the past to main character Sarah without feeling lost. This is the perfect book for you if you are a fan of the chick lit novels and looking for a good laugh with some romance.

I'm not fully against this book, because the idea of the plot was good, and interesting. But on the other hand parts like "We kissed until it became necessary to stop so that we could breathe, by which time my lips were so swollen it looked like I’d been pleasuring a brillo pad." Weren't funny for me I felt that the author tried too hard to make it sound funny. And the poop incident taking nearly 4 pages...

This story was witty and funny and made me laugh, especially the viagra saga, Leo, was a real gent, not many men especially famous actors would have the strong will to stop having sex when Sarah asked him to, and then was so nice to her, the poo incident was a bit too much, made me cringe, there was no need for this, as the story was going well without it, she could have left anything behind, so that was a no no for me, otherwise a great read
