Interviews with sixteen veterans of WWII. Shows the commonalities and differences of experience to be found among Soviet soldiers. Not one of them survived without injury, but more than one experienced the war from day 1, and one was even a veteran of the Winter War. Both common line soldiers and members of more elite units from the NKVD and Naval Infantry are represented.

Could use better editing in more than one way. It really needed another pass by an English speaking editor both to clean up all the typos and deal with some awkward translations. It also could use some more context pointing out the biases likely to be present in interviews made over a half century after their experiences with veterans who spent most of their lives living under a system that mythologized certain aspects of their experiences and denied others. I'm glad I read Ivan's War first, as that does a better job of contextualizing things.

Well worth the effort of overcoming all the minor problems to get the first hand accounts of the war.
