I used this book as a reference when I was researching segregated schools in America in preparation for writing the book Memories of Union High: An Oasis in Caroline County, Virginia 1903-1969. This book provides great insight and historical background into the hard work and dedication of black teachers in the south during segregation. It provides very detailed historical information including landmark court cases and events that eventually lead to the end of school segregation in America. It also shows how black teachers during segregation were more than educators but politician and community leaders who worked with missionary zeal to nurture future generations, install values and racial pride. This book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the segregated education system in America, the great accomplishments that were made during the era of segregation and the fight to end segregation. This book was very valuable to my research.
