The most stubborn of the Bailey sisters was back in town, and determined to start a horse ranch. She’d set her sights on the long-deserted Harper House and no one was going to change McKenna’s mind—not the enigmatic Nate Dempsey or the superstitious folk of Whitehorse, who wanted her married off. Now that the gossips’ tongues were wagging, the sinister rumors plaguing the house had resurfaced. And though McKenna refused to be scared off, someone was trying to run her off the property. Luckily, Nate had always been there to protect her—and Whitehorse’s matchmakers wondered, would the mystery man become a permanent fixture in town?
welcome to b.j. daniels’s small-town america in big sky country
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
Part of the Whitehorse Montana series that features McKenna Bailey. She buys a plot of land and a house at auction and finds herself in the middle of danger as occupants of the house, when it was a home for unruly and orphan boys, return as adults seeking revenge. One of them becones her protector.
The mystery and sadness surrounding Harper House come full circle when the last Harper finally dies. This one broke my heart while reading it. McKenna and Nates story is many things, but for me it was about all those lost and helpless little boys. Loved it!
Oh you so want to read this one so much mystery and heart break and the ending will bring it all together get yourself ready as there are so many twists and turns to keep you guessing
Good story. A lot of the action was near the end. Some action was spread thru out the story. Nate found what he was looking for. McKenna is thinking of giving up her dreams.
I just didn’t enjoy this book. It started out with the point of view from a disturbed man. His mother had left him at a gas station when he was only 7. Afterwards he was taking to Harper House. It was a house with boys that no one wanted. They were not really cared for while they lived there. McKenna had always wondered about Harper house when she was growing up. She bid on it, and won it from an action. She had lots of dreams for the house and property. Shortly after she moved in she found a blood oath by young boys, and they stamped it with bloody thumb prints. They vowed to come back at a designated time and date to hurt those who had hurt them. The suspense was good. I tried to get into this book, but I just couldn’t.
A definite good read; B.J. Daniels has shown she has a talent for telling a complete story unto itself; yet has that ability to make those single complete stories into an exciting series such as her “McCall” series. A must read for Western/Contemporary Romantic Suspense readers.
I picked this up for a quick read. It was confusing for much of the book, which I suppose could be construed as suspense, but it wasn't really. And what romance there was came at the very end and with no real lead-up. Curious all around.
This book is a great read if you pay attention to detail. This book takes a lot of context clues to understand but is worth it in the end. It had a great surprise ending and left me satisfied. Although not so much love as others I have read it shows independence and stubbornness of a women.
An interesting read. A bit confusing, because characters are introduced that don't really further the plot, but I suppose make sense with the series as a whole. Not bad though overall.
