That gossamer-winged fairy Faith, who first appeared in Daniela Drescher's Little Fairy's Christmas , returns in this second picture-book adventure, once again setting out through the woods, this time because she cannot seem to fall asleep. Encountering the Sandman, as he gathers dust to help young children drift off into slumber, a mother fox whose kits won't go to bed, an owl who's always up at night, and an elf family whose young ones keep demanding more stories, to forestall bedtime, Faith discovers that she is not alone in her wakefulness. It is only when a handsome moth fairy prince finds her and brings her to a magical Midsummer Night's party, that she understand just why everybody is having such trouble getting to sleep...

Originally published in German as Die kleine Elfe kann nicht schlafen, this second picture-book about the little fairy Faith is every bit as engaging as its predecessor, with a sweet story and charming illustrations. I particularly enjoy Daniela Drescher's use of color here, with the deep blue and purple shades of evening and night-time forest, and the warm orange and yellow hues of homes both humble (the fox's den) and more ornate (the elf's house). With Faith's search through the forest, her evening at the party, and her eventual drifting off into slumber, Little Fairy Can't Sleep would make an excellent bedtime selection! Recommended to young fairy-tale lovers, and to fans of Daniela Drescher's artwork.

Faith can't sleep. The moon is too bright, and all the little animals in the forest are scuffling through the underbrush making noise. She gets up and begins to explore. One by one she sees the sandman, an owl, a family of little elves, and a fox mother. They all agree that there is something strange in the air that night, and no one is ready to sleep. Faith meets the moth prince fairy and he helps her to solve the mystery of why everyone is awake. It is midsummer night and the fairies are having a party!

This story is so cute and enchanting! I loved the magic of the story and the way Faith meets each of the animals and creatures, wondering why no one can sleep.

The illustrations are very dreamy and sweet. There are little insects and animals in the background, finding their way through the brambles and flowering vines of the forest. This is some of the best artwork I have seen from this artist, and the fairies look happy for once. I love the delicate lines and misty colors in the art style!

LITTLE FAIRY CAN'T SLEEP is a cute fairytale about having trouble sleeping. A little fairy is awake at night and cannot figure out why sleep is so elusive, so she heads out only to find that everyone else is having trouble sleeping too. Eventually, she learns that it is a midsummer's night party, which is why everyone is awake, and she dances until she cannot keep her eyes open.

What I loved: This is a cute picture book story about having trouble sleeping. As the fairy travels, she talks with the sandman and different animals to find out that others are having the same issues. The story is simply told through the brief conversations and elegant illustrations. The artwork captures the magic and whimsical nature of the story through a gentle style.

The text is written in white, which is really helpful against the dark blue backgrounds of night. It is relatively easy to read, typeset in paragraphs on each page spread.

Final verdict: A lovely story about feeling sleepless, LITTLE FAIRY CAN'T SLEEP is a gentle bedtime story that follows a fairy on a nighttime adventure.

While it might be surprising, even fairies get restless and are unable to sleep. In this picture book filled with luminous, magical illustrations that almost take one's breath away, Faith, a little fairy, flits away from her bed when slumber evades her. On her journey, she encounters the sandman, a fox, and an owl, and listens to a family of elves. There seems to be magic in the air or a sense of anticipation. Finally, a moth prince--very handsome, of course!--greets her and takes her to a party where there is dancing and she meets new acquaintances. After all that excitement, she's exhausted, and the prince takes her back home, leaving her finally able to sleep. Youngsters who love fairies and fairy tales may love this one, especially if they take the time to examine the beautiful images. Perhaps some parents and caregivers will choose to use it as a bedtime story intended to entice the little fairies in their household to close their eyes for the night.

A simple but sweet enchanting bedtime story of a fairy on the evening of midsummer's night who cannot sleep and finds that she is not the only one. She encounters many other creatures and wonders why no one seems to be able to sleep this night, only to eventually be invited to a midsummer night's party because "there's magic in the air tonight!" She dances at the party and enjoys the celebration with new friends.

There are not many layers to this story but the narrative does flow nicely the the illustrations wonderfully capture the dream-like state of this hot summer's night. This will certainly inspire a child's imagination.

A book that wants for nothing in the visual side of things, but is rather slender story-wise. A fairy cannot sleep, so goes for a walk – and finds nobody else asleep when they should be, either. She finds the solution, then nods off, the end. Now, almost any story could have some kind of lullaby quality if the narrator is adept enough, and I can see this as a last-thing-before-bed treat, but it doesn't really stand as a story to stick in the mind. And the visuals are so eye-openingly wonderful it would be a very sullen child who doesn't want to explore the pages, and therefore stay up way past their bedtime, in a most defeating-the-object kind of way. Three and a half stars.

A simple story with a fairlytale feel--it felt a little short to me, honestly, but what's here is lovely. A young fairy can't sleep because she feels magic in the air and sets off wandering about the woodland, meeting other creatures (animals and fairy folk) who also feel the excitement of that special evening. Eventually, she finds a Midsummer's Eve party and realizes that is why the night feels so special and she enjoys the festivities. The whole story has a dreamy quality that makes it perfect for bedtime and I love the exquisite details of the flowers, animals, fairy dresses and the elf house in the roots of a tree.

Wow, this is an absolutely gorgeous and magical bedtime story about a little fairy called Faith who can't sleep and her journey to finding herself feeling relaxed enough to go to sleep.

The illustrations in the book are painted with watercolours and they are absolutely beautiful. My daughter and I really loved this book so much and it did help her to go to sleep, so it works!

We highly recommend this amazing book and we look forward to reading more books by this author!

A fairy can't sleep and flies around to see what others are up to. I wanted more from the story. Nothing clever, subversive or original here. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and peaceful, bringing the fairy kingdom to life in a way that the words do not.

Es erwarten den Leser wieder viele unglaublich schöne Illustrationen und eine Magische zauberhafte Märchen Welt. Eine Welt voller Elfen und wundervollen Geschöpfen, einer Welt voller Magie und Märchenhaften Geschichten. Es ist so ein traumhaft schönes Buch, das es schon an Märchenhafte Sagen und Geschichten erinnert. Elfen und die Tiere des Waldes leben hier eng zusammen, sind Freunde und Familie.
