This work argues that all organizations have one motive in everything they do is affected by the perceived wants and needs of a core group of key people. Kleiner gives readers the key to reading a core group's real mission by observing its day-to-day actions.
This book is great because the "theory" presented makes so much sense and actually helps explain a lot of what is going on in organizations. On the other hand it is even better, because despite the name the book is not hostile or negative: it gives solid advice on how to live in the actual reality that we have. With the stuff in the book, you have a better chance of being one of those who matter or at least getting more out of not being in the core group.
One of the best management books I've ever read. A relatively unknown gem because it requires us to face some uncomfortable truths; in the author’s words, “open conversations about Core Groups are usually taboo and for good reason: they trigger deeply emotional feelings about privilege, power and rank.” Highly recommended.
