The Jesus Revolution: Learning from Christ's First Followers

Rate this book
The story of Jesus cannot be contained in a history of 33 years on an ancient strip of land along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The group of 120 followers Jesus empowered transformed the world with the good news of redemption and reconciliation he preached. In this journey through the book of Acts, discover the leaps of faith taken by the early church to spread the news of the miracles they'd witnessed and the message they'd received.

Their story carries us―his current followers―into our future. Their devotion and perseverance challenges us to step out in faith and make a difference in Jesus' name. We can experience Jesus' presence and power as the early church did, and be part of the ongoing movement to change the world with his revolutionary message.

This is a chapter by chapter study of the Book of Acts, telling the story of the early disciples. The Epilogue states: "It starts with 120 followers of Jesus in Jerusalem and ends with tens of thousands of Christians in countless churches across the Roman Empire and beyond." The Jesus Revolution was a revolution of love that changed the world. The early Christians were on fire for the Gospel and risked their lives to share it far and wide. The author reminds us that we should still be part of this Revolution, sharing the story of Jesus and the salvation He offers and growing His church. We don't risk our lives to spread the Gospel, yet we often hesitate because we don't want to offend or we aren't sure what to say. We won't end up in prison for telling people about Jesus, but we worry about being embarrassed. Reading about the passion of Jesus' early followers and the risks they took to spread the Gospel around the world in a time of primitive travel and a hostile world should encourage us to do our part in a time where there is little physical danger for those of us in the Western World. It occurs to me that Christians in parts of the world where they are regularly persecuted for their faith are a lot more like the Christians of Acts than most of us living in our comfortable Western world.

This book is essentially a simple set of studies on the Biblical book of Acts, giving a bit of historical context, and some application for today. I downloaded it free for my Kindle, and read a bit each day over several weeks.

Nothing really new or inspiring, but the writing is good, the style easy to read, and there are some interesting sections. In addition, there are some useful reminders about the excitement of the early Church, something which we've rather lost today, and some sections which seemed quite thought-provoking at the time.

Certainly worth reading, if you're interested in an overview of the book of Acts, but nothing special.

I enjoyed this book as a companion for my reading of the book of Acts. I would have loved to have completed this study in a group setting, and had others to talk to about the discussion questions.
