“Like, what’s the point of having the Force if you’re not gonna have fun with it. You know what I mean?” – “Do I ever!”

2,5/5!

Sav Malagan, undercover with the Dank Grags, has arrived on battle torn Jedha. She continues to search for the kidnapped Maz Kanata while the rest of Maz's team tries to survive the chaos on Jedha and locate their leader.

This series has not been my cup of tea (this is literally the first Daniel Jose Older story I have not really enjoyed or loved in SW), but I am going to still finish it. It's not bad at all, I just haven't vibed with it.

This issue did have some fun stuff, like Dexter (with his fabulous moustache) talking about his relationship with Maz, which sounds like the most wholesome thing ever, and more of Sav's friendship with Saya, who, though one of the Dank Grags, is also just a young girl who no one has ever thought good enough or worthy of anything much. I also liked that this issue makes this story feel, overall, more connected to the events of Phase 2 of the High Republic: the battle of Jedha is such an important event, and it's cool seeing what side of the battle Sav and her team experienced and how they influenced the battle for better and for worse.

So, yeah, I don't have anything super big to say. This story just isn't my thing, sadly!

“It was supposed to be one of the most important days in a young Jedi’s life, and don’t get me wrong, it was amazing […] All I remember that day as is the moment I realized I was never going to be a Jedi. I didn’t really know what I’d do instead until I ended up running off with Maz Kanata’s pirate crew. It felt like the rest of my life suddenly became much clearer.”

That was quite a bit of fun.

One of the things I like the most about the High Republic comic series is how it weaves and connects with the main story being told and, usually, the different installments give us unique and important information that complements and broadens the central plot. It's really cool. And the fact that this series is finally getting there, getting involved in the larger conflict, is exciting.

However, the fact that the book run of this series is already finished and the story concluded makes me a bit apprehensive as to what else could be added.

For what it matters, this issue was dynamic and fun and made me pass a good time. It might not be my favorite thing out there but it does make for an enjoyable read.

At this point I feel safe in saying Older is just not the Star Wars author for me. His stuff has a weird, casual vibe and the characterizations just don’t seem to feel right for the universe to me. The Therm stuff in this issue was goofy, he feels shoehorned into this series just because he has a funny name. And the artwork I find strange and off putting.

I am enjoying this arc, not the most influential in terms of wider plot, but still fun… also realising I’ve forgotten a lot of details of this phase of High republic already though.
