'Merry Christmas!' said Fox.
'Merry whatmas?' said Hedgehog.
'Merry whichmas?' said Tortoise.
You see, it was Hedgehog and Tortoise's first Christmas.
So they didn't know what Christmas was.

Fox thinks Christmas is about presents, Badger thinks it's about pudding, Magpie thinks it's about singing . . . Tortoise and Hedgehog begin to feel rather overwhelmed with all the noise and fuss. But in a quiet moment of reflection they learn the most important lesson of Christmas is about being with the ones you love.

Adorable, energetic illustrations are paired with a fun, little story as a number of creatures try to figure out what Christmas means to them. It's cute, and a little silly, and ends with a sweet moment between Tortoise and Hedgehog.

Ο Σκαντζόχοιρος και η Χελώνα, οι δυο πολυαγαπημένοι ήρωες της σειράς της "Αγκαλιάς", επιστρέφουν, με ένα πολύτιμο μήνυμα για τα Χριστούγεννα, το οποίο θέλουν να μοιραστούν με παιδάκια ηλικία 3 ετών και άνω. Ένα μήνυμα που μας θυμίζει πως η σημασία των Χριστουγέννων δεν βρίσκεται στο να παίρνουμε δώρα, να τρώμε γλυκά και άλλες λιχουδιές, να τραγουδάμε χριστουγεννιάτικα τραγούδια, αν κι αρκετοί φαίνεται να το πιστεύουν αυτό, με τον καθένα να υπερασπίζεται την άποψή του. Κάτι που δημιουργεί φασαρία κι αναστάτωση, με τους μικρούς μας πρωταγωνιστές να χρειάζονται μια στιγμή ηρεμίας, προκειμένου να αναλογιστούν τι είναι πραγματικά τα Χριστούγεννα. Μια απάντηση που μόνο μέσα στην καρδιά του μπορεί να βρει κανείς, αφού το πραγματικό τους νόημα δεν βρίσκεται πουθενά αλλού παρά μόνο στην αγάπη, μα και στις στιγμές που μοιραζόμαστε μαζί με όσους αγαπάμε. Όμορφο, τρυφερό, συγκινητικό και βαθιά αληθινό, με την εικονογράφηση της Polly Dunbar να "ντύνει" με πολύ όμορφο τρόπο την αφήγηση, ο συγγραφέας μάς προσφέρει μια ακόμα ιστορία που αξίζει να διαβαστεί και που περνάει το σημαντικότερο μήνυμα απ' όλα.

First sentence: "Merry Christmas!" said Fox. "Merry what-mas?" said Hedgehog. "Merry which-mas?" said Tortoise. It was their first Christmas, so they didn't know what Christmas was.

Premise/plot: Apparently this is the sixth book in a series starring lovely animal characters. This one in particular is holiday-themed. Hedgehog and Tortoise are not at all sure they approve of this thing called Christmas--at least not as described by each of their friends. It's all a bit much...can these two friends find a way to make it work?

My thoughts: I wish I'd been familiar with other books in the series. I think I might have had more attachment to the characters and their friendships. I do know that I still LOVE AND ADORE Polly Dunbar's illustrations. I am not new to her work. The illustrations of this one are so super cute and adorable.

MERRY WHATMAS by Eoin McLaughlin is a children’s Christmas holiday book following hedgehog and his woodland friends as they prepare for Christmas. Each animal ‘sees’ Christmas as something different from presents to songs, food and decorations but for Hedgehog and Tortorise everything is overwhelming. Needing time for themselves, Hedgehog and Tortoise find a quiet place to decompress but in the end, return to celebrate a day for Christmas and friends.

Told from third person perspective MERRY WHATMAS is a sweet and wonderful story focusing on the anxiety of the holidays with colorful holiday images, simple language and text, and sweet animals celebrating family together.

Hedgehog and Tortoise celebrate their first Christmas.

This picture book introduces the holiday Christmas and provides a social script for celebration according to the traditions of the United Kingdom. It also features common woodland creatures in Great Britain.

The story discusses "the meaning of Christmas." After having characters express typical consumeristic and secular ideas, the "true" meaning of Christmas is expressed by owl as "being with ones you love."

I was rather worried about tortoise freezing to death since he was supposed to be hibernating.

So cute and a sweet way to remind kids it's ok if the noise and hustle of Christmas gets to be too much, it's ok to be like Tortoise and take some time away - friends will come and find you or you can enjoy it in your own way. :) Loved this subtle message.

Η Χελώνα και ο Σκαντζόχοιρος γιορτάζουν πρώτη φορά τα Χριστούγεννα και μπλέκουν σ’ ένα αρκετά φασαριόζικο σύνολο προετοιμασιών που κάνουν οι φίλοι τους τα ζώα. Για τι είναι τα Χριστούγεννα λοιπόν; Μα φυσικά για να παίρνουμε δώρα, για να τρώμε γλυκά, για να τραγουδάμε, για να στολίζουμε, για να φοράμε ζεστά ρούχα. Μήπως όμως όλα αυτά δεν είναι το πραγματικό νόημα της γιορτής;

Ο Eoin McLaughlin έγραψε μια αστεία και ταυτόχρονα συγκινητική ιστορία για παιδιά από 3 ετών και πάνω που αποτυπώνει με χιούμορ και σκεπτικισμό τη φασαρία των ετοιμασιών για τα Χριστούγεννα. Πολύ μικρές προτάσεις, λιτοί διάλογοι, έμφαση στις εικόνες κι ένα τρυφερό μήνυμα είναι γνωρίσματα που θα αιχμαλωτίσουν τους μικρούς αναγνώστες, θα τους κάνουν να γελάσουν με τα παθήματα του σκαντζόχοιρου και της χελώνας, θα συγκινηθούν με τη μοναξιά που νιώθει η χελώνα και θα καταλάβουν μέσα από ευφάνταστες ανατροπές ποιο είναι το πραγματικό νόημα των Χριστουγέννων και ποια είναι η ουσία της γιορτής αυτής.

Η εικονογράφηση της Polly Dunbar είναι υπέροχη, απολαυστική, χορταστική, γεμάτη απίθανες λεπτομέρειες και ρεαλισμό! Με μεγάλες μορφές, πολλά χρώματα, κρυμμένες σκηνές σε κάθε σελίδα, εκφραστικότητα, είναι η ιδανική συντροφιά του τρυφερού κειμένου του παραμυθιού. Χιλιάδες δώρα σε κάθε μέγεθος και με κάθε περιτύλιγμα, ποντικάκια που σουλατσάρουν παντού κουβαλώντας πράγματα και προσπαθούν να στολίσουν τον σκαντζόχοιρο που δεν του αρέσει αυτό, η φουντωτή ουρά του σκίουρου, τα στολίδια, τα συννεφάκια με τα λόγια των ηρώων που μετατρέπουν έτσι το βιβλίο σε κόμικ, η παραστατικότητα της μεγάλης ανατροπής που θα οδηγήσει τη χελώνα να φύγει μακριά απ’ όλ’ αυτά και φυσικά η εκπληκτική εικόνα της τελευταίας σελίδας με μάγεψαν, με συγκίνησαν και με έκαναν να ξεφυλλίζω το παραμύθι ξανά και ξανά.

«Τι είναι Χριστούγεννα» λοιπόν; Ένα υπέροχο παραμύθι για μικρά παιδιά που δίνει έμφαση στην αγάπη, στην ανθρωπιά, στη φιλία και γυρνάει την πλάτη του σε όλη τη φασαριόζικη προετοιμασία που συνοδεύει την πιο μαγική περίοδο του χρόνου. Γέλιο και τρυφερότητα, συγκίνηση και χιούμορ θα κρατήσουν μοναδική συντροφιά στα μικρά παιδιά!

This little book is for EVERY-one who celebrates the holiday season. Artwork inside is sweet and calming. There are moments of humour and joy.

The progression of the Tortoise and Hedgehog's story arc is predictable in a darling way. A great reminder that the holiday season is about togetherness and seeking personal joy over the hustle and bustle.

Read this with my 7 and 5 year old and they loved the artwork and how quick they could turn the pages (as there is not too many words on the page to read before their attentions wane).

I will be purchasing this for a few friends on my list with little ones this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, Merry whatmas, Merry whichmas... Meet Fox, Hedgehog and Tortoise who are a little confused!

Fox loves Christmas. For him it is all about the presents. Hedgehog and Tortoise have never experienced Christmas but their friends are ready to tell them what it is all about - as well as presents there is of course the pudding and the singing but does anyone realise it is also, most importantly, about being with the ones you love?

My favourite part is the last page with hedgehog and tortise.
