My Thoughts
Foraging in nature and creating homemade products is frequently romanticised. 'Enchanted Foraging' offers practical advice and appropriate warnings to ensure you are foraging safely, whilst still enjoying the magic of working with nature. We are reminded of the need to slow down, to appreciate the calm pace whilst admiring the natural world and everything it has to offer.
Organised by season, the main section of the book details the plants, roots, foliage, flowers etc. that are perfect for foraging during each season. When reading, I would recommend starting with the season you are in and working through the seasons as they arrive. Once you have foraged, there are ideas for things to craft with your ingredients, from decoctions, tinctures and balms to wreaths, jams and candles.
As well as the practical side of foraging, the book features information about seasonal festivals and celebrations from across a range of cultures and religions. Although some pagan festivals are included, the book isn’t ‘witchy’ or aimed solely at witches and the magical community. It’s accessible to everyone and anyone looking to forage in nature and use what is available to us. As the book is organised by season it makes sense to share how some people choose to honour the changing seasons, and for me this is the ‘enchanting’ aspect of foraging and working with nature.
I expected there to be a lot of crossover between the information provided in the book and the card deck. Although the deck does include a few cards that summarise the tips from the introduction of the book, (so there is some repetition of information) the rest of the cards work very differently.
The information provided on the cards is a lot more practical. At this point it’s worth pointing out that it is not an oracle deck. As well as including a beautiful illustration, the cards provide key details about each forigable plant, such as;
- the scientific name
- where it is located (continent)
- the best time to forage
- how to identify it
- harvesting tips
- suggested uses
When it comes to the foraging of specific plants I think the card deck is a lot more useful. I am more likely to refer to the deck, over the book, for information about each forigable item. It contains more practical and relevant information for each plant and the cards make it easily accessible. The deck is a handy tool for any witch to have in their toolbox.
Overall, both the book and deck are lovely guides for anyone looking to get started in foraging and wildcrafting. The author is clearly knowledgeable and shares practical tips and advice, as well as a range of wildcrafting projects.
