Pies and Promises is book one in the Heartcraft Market series by Duckie Mack. This is my very first book by Duckie and I adored it. This was such a sweet, swoony, lovely story.
Jason Webber is a single dad to two adorable kids, little three year old Emily and six year old Parker. Jason is a stay at home dad. It was fine when he was still married to his lawyer now ex-wife but now on his own, he’s barely hanging on. Jason is a fantastic pie baker. It’s his passion. Twice a month, he sells his pies at the Heartcraft Market but he’s not earning enough to make ends meet. But, on an unplanned stop with his daughter for a treat at Pops Diner, a place he’s never been before, his life changed.
Nico Leone has worked in his family’s diner, Pops Diner, since he was old enough to work. Now with his father at home recovering from a mild heart attack, Nico is in charge. He has so many ideas of ways to update the diner but his dad is not agreeable. When the cute dad and daughter stopped in to the diner one afternoon, he was taken with both of them. And when he went to the Heartcraft Market to see him again and check out his pies, not only was he even more smitten with the adorable baker, he saw a way to help both Jason and his pie business and help the diner as well!
These two were so cute together. Neither of them were the one night stand kind of guy. Nico had been wanting to find someone to start a family but with limited time to date and also being a man already in his thirties, he wasn’t having any luck. Jason still had some battle scars from the break up of his marriage but still hoped to find someone to share a life with again someday. But being a package deal with two kids wasn’t easy.
Feelings grew fast between these two but having two small children sort of forced them to slow things down. I loved the way Nico was with Jason’s kids. They just took to each other immediately. And I loved the way their lives just seemed to compliment each other with the pies and the diner and also the way they supported each other. Jason loved being a dad. His kids were his first priority. Nico coming into his life was just like a puzzle piece fitting into it’s proper place.
This was such a wonderful, sweet, sexy book. I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it. I can’t wait to read the next book, Meats & Memories, which is Dash’s book, another vendor at the Heartcraft Market.
5 stars ⭐ - for the delicious pies & promises kept! A heartfelt, soothing & charming MM romance with a beautiful story, sweet kids, great families, tasty treats, swoon + cuteness all over, low angst & a hearty HEA! I absolutely devoured this in 5hrs!
Jason; caring sweetheart; is a stay-at-home dad, since his divorce he'd been getting by with selling pies (barely). His Mom & kids- Emily, Parker are sweet. I admire his relationship with his ex wife (loved how Duckie potrayed it!). #PansexualRep #ReaderLikeMe
Nico; thoughtful, swoony, family oriented; is taking care of his family diner (need new "flavour"? Can Pie be it?) since his dad's recent health scare. He has awesome supportive parents & employees.
Family matters the most. From the moment Jas & Nic meet, their connection is apparent. Special. Jason's cautious, but Nico's ever so patient. Their understanding runs deep. Attraction blazes, time together flirty & fun. The kids like Nico. J+N? They fall in love harmoniously. Grow as a family of 4. ~Responsibilities, Care, Dine, Greet, Market, Pies, Flirt, Talk & Kisses, Call sleep, Not easy, Dating...
"I felt myself being drawn to him. He was a gravitational force, a planet, and I was helplessly caught in orbit around him."
Jason & Nico's relationship is very healthy. They're ALL IN, not secretive, work through their money issues, low angst. Discussion of Marvel/DC was fun! With kids, alone time is scarce, but they cherish every moment & find time to appreciate eachother (i.e. Hot sexy times). The family scenes are so adorable. These two deserved their HEA💕. ~Love, Business proposal, Partners, Teases, Like, Settling anew, Date, Hot & Cuddles, Too cute, Family, Gratitude, Daily happiness...
“I’m whatever you need me to be.”
Gosh, Duckie always writes such good cute stories. The acceptance & open minded people here made my heart warm, pleasantly surprising me. I can say this series started with a bang & I can't wait to see what's next! (Ah yes, Jason's friend Dash 👀). P.s. Loved that bonus story! Now I crave pies, I haven't eaten them ever 😭.

This had sweet family moments, and no angst whatsoever. It was very enjoyable for what it was, though without any conflict, my emotional engagement is somewhat limited.
Not my favourite narration, though it could also be that some of the dialogue was a bit stilted and would benefit from using more contractions.
Duckie Mack's characters have grown up, but they haven't lost their sweetness and their low angst approach to love! With this first offering in the Heartcraft Market series, we meet Jason and Nico, who fall in love over pie and integrate their lives together - blending Jason's kids and ex-wife with Nico's crazy parents and solve each others woes with pie...
I absolutely love Jason's two adorable kids and I'm sure they'll pop up in Dean's book when we get the second Heartcraft Market book!
If you need a feel good read and want to know about out of this world pie ideas, pick up Pies and Promises.
I really loved this sweet low angst love story. Nico was just about perfect. He was just what Jason and the children needed. This was my first book by Duckie Mack and I’m really impressed. When you’re looking for a slow burn super loving story I highly recommend this one.
Jason is a stay-at-home dad, and he loves it. He loves watching his children grow and learn and their personalities come out. He is struggling a little bit, because while his ex pays child support, he doesn't feel comfortable using that for anything other than his children. He is a vendor at a farmer's marker every two weeks and sells his homemade pies. Jason loves making pies and experiments with different flavourings for his fillings. Nico's father has just had a health scare, and Nico is now running the family diner. Nico has ideas on how to upgrade and bring in new customers, but doesn't want to step on his father's toes. He figures that he can make small changes, though, and when he meets Jason and finds out that he makes pies, Nico buys the leftovers from the farmer's market and sells them in the diner. This is the second book that I've read by this author, and I really like them. They are soothing, low angst, with people who get to know each other and support each other in their endeavours. They listen to one another and love each other without being obnoxious about it, and it is kind of refreshing to read. I mean, I love a good angst story, but most of the drama is caused by stupid misunderstandings that could be solved by just talking about things. The kids in this one are just regular kids, who get excited about new things and get upset when they should. Altogether, lovely and refreshing.
If you think that pies are sweet, it’s just because you haven’t met Jason & Nico yet 🫠🫠
This first book in the Heartcraft Market Series was exactly what I needed on a dreary & rainy March day 💗
This cute story of insta-love, second chances and opposites attract is Duckie Mack at her best! You cannot read this book and not crave a piece of pie (or more!) afterwards (or during reading)…..
A cute & steamy story about a chance encounter between single “super dad” Jason and the cuddly diner owner Nico. I fell in love with these two immediately.
Usually, I’m not a huge fan of single dad books because the kids annoy me. But this was just such a great story that I was swept away by Jason and his two children - just like Nico 💖
As always, Duckie Mack’s writing is impeccable and offers just such a great reading experience. The characters are well-developed and the dialogue is fun & cute.
The author once again manages to ensure the balance between serious & fun, cute & steamy and sweet & sexy 💖🥵
So, here we go: Plot: 🥧🥧🥧🥧.5 Steam: 🌶️🌶️ Angst: very low Swoon: 🫠🫠🫠🫠
So, if you love pie, hunky diner owners, a cute single dad, super man references, jock straps and second chances, then grab this great book 🙏🏻💙
I can’t wait for the next in the Series which is the hot, tattooed Dash’s story ❤️🔥❤️🔥
*I rcvd an ARC from the author and this is my honest review

Overall Opinion Duckie is my absolute go to author for sweet low angst books, and this one is my favourite so far! It is Jason and Nico's story, one a single father and the other in charge of running his family diner. It was a slow burn of sorts at the beginning but then things changed and oh how I swooned! Jason is the absolute best father to Parker and Emily and I would so buy his pies! Nico is run off his feet and can't catch a break with finding the right man for him, until he meets Jason! It was a very heartwarming story with lots of divine spicy scenes as well as emotional sweet scenes as well, a perfect combination of both! Once again, Duckie wrote another amazing masterpiece and I cannot wait for the next in the series!

3.5* I kind of binged this series but in reverse order. This was my least fave and why I read it last. I'm not a fan of the single dad trope and these kids were just a shade too perfect given they were 3 and 6. Still a cute story of a guy who makes a living selling homemade pies twice a month who hooks up with the son of the diner owner who has to take over and convince his dad to upgrade after a heart attack.
I thought it maybe seemed a bit too easy that the guy divorced from a woman with two kids and no one even thinks to question that he might be interested in men. He says he's bi and his wife and family knew, but no one else. But I guess that's neither here nor there. I was also a bit annoyed that Jason was on the verge of bill/mortgage non-payment because he refused to use the child support to pay the bills. "It's for the kids". Yeah, for the kids to keep living in their home and feed them and not have them live on the street. What good is $250K in the bank if the kids are homeless? It wasn't quite that bad but it kind of annoyed me.
So while I enjoyed it and I do like pie, it wasn't my fave in the series.
“It may have started with pie, but it ended with the promise of something I only dreamed of. I know you told me once not to make promises I couldn’t keep. But I’m here to make promises that I can keep, that would be easy for me to do so.”
What an adorably sentimental love story Duckie Mack has written for us. Pies & Promises is a feel good, low angst MM romance that lets us feel the love that two people find, then watch it grow.
Jason and Nico’s story is relatable, as the characters have had life experiences prior to meeting each other that provide them with insight into what each wants out of their relationship.
Trust and family are the special ingredients for this recipe of love.
What a WONDERFUL and SPECIAL Book!! This is Book #1 in HEARTCRAFT MARKET and this is going to be a REMARKABLE Series. Meeting Jason and his sweet children Parker and Emily is such a treat. His relationship with their Mom was an added Bonus. Divorce is sometimes the logical decision for the best outcome. Nico was the happiness this little family needed. The missing piece to this BEAUTIFUL puzzle. This Book left me with all the feels. Strong characters, Cute Kids, Dreams coming true and PIE!!! The PERFECT DUCKIE MACK Book!!! I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO BOOK #2 IN THIS HEARTCRAFT MARKET SERIES!!!!!!!!!!
This read reminded me of time spent years ago in rural Wisconsin. The only roadside diner in the area. A 5* breakfast and, a cylinder case of pies...so, I tried the cherry pie..mouthgasm and asked where they bought them. The waitress behind the counter, obviously insulted and told me "everythin here is made from scratch in this here kitchen".
There is nothing like pie and the author brings a dessert of a story you will want to read again and again; save it for a sick day or a mental health day or a dark rainy day and you will feel like you had the best pie day ever!
Nice, cute, sweet, hot, funny, great flow. This story has it all! I love when one or both MCs are single dads, and Duckie was fantastic in picturing Lulu and Parker. Pancakesicle is definitely a new word I'll be using 😊 I love that message, btw. Now, let the waiting for the next one begin! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This book was literally perfect ! The characters were amazing! Parker and Emily have my heart! The ending had me in the most happiest tears ever ! Such a great story!
They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
Nico is managing his family diner after his fathers health scare. He’s always wanted a family of his own but hasn’t found someone who wants the same, until he meets single dad Jason.
Jason is struggling to make ends meet after his divorce, being a stay at home dad. He sells his pies at a local farmers market but he needs more.
When Nico meets Jason and learns of his pies he believes they can help each other. Nico wasn’t expecting to fall for his pies as much as he has for Jason.
This was such a sweet story and also makes you crave some pie.
What an incredibly heartfelt, sweet, swoony romance between a pie-baking single father and a man trying to bring his father’s diner into the 22bd century while maintaining its charisma. Add in two adorable kids and a wonderful flow and Pies & Promised is shaping up to be a fantastic start to Duckie’s newest series.
Jason is divorced and struggling to make ends meet. He’s been a stay-at-home-father for half a decade and he refused to use the child support to stay afloat. A chance encounter at Pop’s Diner changes his and his kids’ future. Nico’s father suffers a minor heart attack which leads him to take over the diner. When he’s introduced to Jason’s pie, he’s found a way to freshen up the stagnant diner and gain a family he’s always wanted.
The sexy times are superb. The sweet times are fulfilling. It has heart and humor and heat and a perfect blend of family and hope. I adored everything about this MM contemporary romance!

An absolutely beautiful and very sweet story by Duckie Mack! This is the story of single dad Jason, who is recently divorced and trying to make ends meet. He loves being a stay at home dad to Parker and Emily, and making pies for his farmer’s market business. But not only is the money not enough, but he’s very much missing having a partner in life. Being a dad leaves little time for dating, but then a sexy man fails into his lap. Nico has taken over his father’s dined while he recovers from a health scare. Nico hasn’t had much luck in finding the right guy, and his increased hours aren’t helping. Until one adorable dad walks into his diner. This is a very realistic look at single parents trying to find love again, and the stress of being overworked and financially struggling. It’s also a beautiful look at making your own family, falling in love, and finding your way again. I really loved this story and these men, and I’m looking forward to the next one!
This is a sweet, no conflict romance, so if that's your jam then you might enjoy it more than I did. I don't like lots of angst, but I found these characters (ALL the characters, including secondary ones) to be a little too perfect and the plot almost non-existant. It's kind of like a Hallmark movie but with even less conflict. I admit I was bored after a while and skimmed a lot. YYMV
Can’t believe that a man can support himself and 2 kids by making pies. (With no mention of a commercial oven!) the dialog is difficult, often can’t tell who is speaking. This book needs work!
Pies & Promises was an absolutely enjoyable MM single dad romance full of sweet treats and even sweeter heat.
The first book in the Heartcraft Market series, Pies & Promises served as a great introduction to the titular weekend market that will tie all the books together, as well as some of the characters that will all get their turn in the spotlight.
I truly enjoyed both Jason and Nico. In terms of their relationship, this was a relatively drama-free romance. Both Jason and Nico's problems stemmed primarily from their professional lives, not their personal, so it was easy to enjoy them as a couple without having to first spend hundreds of pages wondering if they will or they won't.
Both characters were well-rounded and dynamic. Jason was a perfect balance of wanting what's best for his kids and wanting to find love again. He was adept at being able to devote time to one part of his life while simultaneously giving the other part of his life the care and attention it needed to thrive.
I appreciated that Duckie Mack gave both main characters their own set of complications to work through, but for me, this story is truly about the love that Jason and Nico have for each other. It wasn't insta-love, but it was close. These two just fit into each other's lives so well, both personally and professionally, that it was clear they were meant for each other from the start.
Pies & Promises was well written, giving both Nico and Jason the time and space to thrive both as individuals and as a couple. This is definitely one of the steamier Duckie Mack books I've read, made even better by Jason's nerdy persona.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first trip to Heartcraft Market, and I can't wait to see what's in store in the next book.
You have to take three bites before you can judge...
Or... Read Three chapters? This story was excellent! The slow burn about killed me, but it was done so well. I enjoyed getting to watch Nico's and Jason's relationship grow and blossom. Along with Nico's relationship with the kids, it was so sweet how they adored Nico. And it was really endearing to see how Nico interacted with both Emily and Parker, he was so great and at ease with the both of them. Some people shy away from people with kids, but not Nico.
I also appreciated Duckie's nod to her Love Bank series, it was awesome to see Crow's Nest being mentioned in this story. And Duckie, you made me crave these unique pie combinations! I'm tempted to make an apple pie with cheddar cheese crust now, just so I can know what it tastes like! How could you, Duckie?? Haha
The scene where Parker says Pancakesicle instead of pansexual was so cute! It instantly made me smile! I adored every single character that was introduced in this story, and I hope we get to see more of them in the future. I am also really eager to read Dash's story, he's the mysterious character in this story, so I can't wait to read his book.
Overall a really fantastic book, Duckie knows how to write characters that you can't help but fall for, and cheer along with. Oh! I also want to mention that I appreciated how Duckie had Nico arrange a business deal with Jason, instead of putting pressure on their relationship, he made it official with contracts and meetings.
