The first in a brand-new sensationally spacey, action-packed and adventure-filled middle grade series written by the incredible Lorraine Gregory – perfect for fans of MG Leonard and David Baddiel!
Nothing exciting ever happens on twelve-year-old Danny’s estate. That is until he falls through a locker in his grandad’s workshop and finds himself in an Interdimensional Lost Property Office! And – even weirder – his new boss is a giant purple squid on a segway!
Now Danny, best mate Modge and annoying cousin Inaaya find themselves in charge of returning alien items to all corners of the universe. But someone – or something – is determined to stop them. And there’s NOTHING these evil aliens won’t stop at to achieve complete multi-dimensional domination . . . even trapping Danny and his friends on a planet a million light years away from Earth.
If the fate of the entire multiverse was in your hands, what would YOU do?
I read this as part of The FBA(Fantastic Book Awards) club I run at school.
This was a very enjoyable read and will attract those who love space and adventure.
This story starts with Daniel being a bit of a tear way! But ends up being the hero in our story. With his best friend and cousin as side kicks- What could go wrong?
This story is fundamentally a sci fi adventure story with underlining themes of friendship, family, trust and honour.
For those who enjoy fast-moving and exciting stories with characters working together against darker forces.
The tale starts off fairly benignly - Danny's cousin has moved into his council estate home unexpectedly, always doing her homework and looking down her nose at him. Best friend Modge is easy-going but not exactly a help. His granddad, a caretaker whom Danny loves, has asked Danny to help with a project, for which Danny is late to show up. Danny is thus distraught after his granddad suffers a heart attack, leaving his grandson with cryptic messages ana asking him to help while he's not there.
Feeling guilty, of course Danny is going to try... until he finds out his granddad has been hiding a cosmic lost property office in his workshop and Danny is now responsible for returning all manner of lost things around different dimensions to their rightful places.
Calling Modge and space nerd Inaava in as backup, Danny has to get to grips with his new job, his new boss (a purple squid on a segway) and what could be a nefarious scheme to dominate the multiverse through lost property.
A different kind of sci-fi story (though reminded me a little of the Strangeways Travel Agency), with some pre-teen issues (Modge and Inaava having issues that Danny just isn't seeing) and some teamwork needed to solve the mysteries and problems, it's pacey and a good visual adventure.
Wasn't sure about the narrator's voice for Modge (a bit too 'dim' sounding), but works well on an audio format and voices other characters well.
For ages 8-12.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample audio copy.
I received an review audiobook from the publishers in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.
INTERDIMENSIONAL EXPLORERS is the start of a multi-verse adventure for children.
I loved that the book is not about kids finding themselves part of some interdimensional baddie-fighting-force but a complex lost and found department. Not only is it a really different job to have in fiction but it's also celebrating the sort of jobs that often get overlooked. And despite this less obviously heroic job, the kids save the day using their wits and lost-and-found skills to the best of the abilities.
And while they're doing all of that? Well, they get to explore the multiverse. We have wild and wacky worlds here, full of imagination and brilliant creatures. I look forward to exploring more worlds in books to come.
Danny, the narrator, is a mixed-race kid from a council estate, which is so nice to see in a book. This is a book that takes the stereotypes about council estates and explores the reality - the lack of council investment in services, the communities living there, and more. I grew up at the intersection of two estates, with another two really close by, and it just felt like my neighbourhood.
Adonis Siddique takes the book (written with such voice - you can hear the kid coming across so clearly) and brings it to life. Danny, Modge, and Inaaya all have their own accents, and I loved hearing it celebrate a part of life that's often ignored or looked down on.
This is a strong start to the series, with more instalments to come!
A fast paced, action packed book which answers the perennial question about why we always end up with odd socks instead of pairs!
Danny and his best friend are thrown into the adventure of a lifetime when Danny's grandad falls ill and needs him to help to look after 'things' at his office. Danny had no idea what secrets his grandad was hiding until he ends up finding an Interdimensional Lost Property Office at the back of an old locker. Upon discovering a plethora of creatures who have fallen through worm holes and need returning to their own dimension, Danny and Modge soon realise they need to enlist the help of Inaaya, Danny's nemesis and super bossy cousin, with her amazing brain, to safely deliver the creatures, avoid the wrath of Mrs A (think giant purple squid on a segway!), solve a mystery and save the multiverse to make Danny's grandad proud.
A sci-fi fantasy for children age 9+, a coming of age story and a high octane intergalactic adventure all rolled into one, we loved it. Plus we finally have an answer for where all of our plastic tub lids disappear to, along with our missing socks!
Thank you to NetGalley and Farshore for sending us this audiobook for review. All opinions are our own.
This is the first book in the new series from Lorraine Gregory. It is phenomenal! Full of brilliant characters, both human and other crazy creatures, it takes the reader on a journey with a group of misfit, unlikely heroes as they try to save the multiverse. Danny, his irritating cousin Inaaya and Modge, his best friend are tasked with taking care of Danny’s grandad’s secret job when he has to go to the hospital. They discover a whole secret world! There are lots of laughs as well, as they go from one problem to the next, including a secret plot that will lead to the destruction of the Multiverse. Can this unlikely trio save the day? Read to find out! The book is exceptionally well written and flows along smoothly. There’s plenty of ‘grossness’ and naughtiness to keep middle grade readers (and adults!) hooked. The creatures are fabulous and have the most creative names and characteristics. Lorraine has a knack of using fantastic verbal imagery to create all of the different dimensions and making them come to life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more of the Interdimensional Explorers adventures!
I found this book to be a great adventure for pre-adolescent readers. It deals with friendship and family relationships, as well as responsibility and doing what is right, even when it is hard and others disagree with you. There are a few subtle lessons in compassion for animals, as well as seeing things from other people's perspective and trying to understand that perspective without it being soppy or too obvious. There's the right amount of danger and scary creatures with a dash of humour for the target age group and I think it will be especially popular with grade 3/4 reluctant readers. I would recommend it for a class read-aloud.
Danny is happy enough messing around the estate with his best friend, helping out his granddad in his workshop and avoiding his annoying cousin as much as possible. Then his grandad gets ill and he finds out exactly how much more there is to his job! This was a really fun sci-fi adventure through many different worlds. Lots of unusual creatures and amazing lost items from other dimensions, and some seriously creepy baddies. The narrator has a great voice, Modge always made me smile.
I picked this book from the library and I read a chapter to my ten year old daughter every few nights over the summer holidays and she wanted me to give this a great review so the next book gets written quickly - she loved it we just stayed up until ten tonight to finish it as she wouldn’t let me put it down this close to the end - thanks so much wow what a great reality we really feel like we know the characters and we need to know what happens next
Well, that was a whole load of fun! Aliens, weird spider creatures, wyrm holes, space travel, friendship and mystery solving! When Danny is entrusted with galactic lost property duties, he realises there’s more to it than there seems… and it’s not all good! I loved the characters in this and it was just dead good fun!
A fantastically original adventure through the dimensions. Lorraine Gregory's council estate kids are a pure joy and all the action is brought fizzing to life with Jo Lindley's glorious artwork. More fun than the multiverse can handle!
I loved this fun MG adventure. The characters are great and kids will really enjoy the banter between them as they find themselves exploring other worlds. Fantastic fun!
The audio version of this children’s book allows you to listen to a fast paced fantasy/Sci-fi adventure. Goodies, baddies, villains and a multitude of exotic locations and life forms, some very cute and others less so. I thought the first few chapters suggested a boys book, but then the story expands and I’m sure all children will enjoy the book. Thank you to Harper Collins Audio UK and NetGalley for the audio ARC. This middle-grade sci-fi is about a boy caught up in a conspiracy in the multiverse world, when he discovers that his grandfather, the council estate's handyman, is in fact in charge of reassigning lost property across the various dimensions.
Late back due to a school detention, Danny blames himself for his grandfather's heart attack. especially when Grandad sprouted gibberish like 'Beware the cheese!'. But when he discovers his grandfather's secret, and the heavy burden he bore, Danny is determined to step up to the task and defend the integrity of the different dimensions. After all, there are more precious things than profit.
This is prefect pitched for middle-grade readers. Go on far-flung adventures with an adorable 'pet', a good friend and an annoying cousin (who isn't that annoying really when you get to know her). I also liked the representation of a biracial protagonist done so subtly. I enjoyed the clever and down-to-earth cousin, who aspires to be an astrophysicist on day one.
Prologue opening line : My grandad always had a special for finding things that were lost. Chapter 1 opening line : "You are in so much trouble!" My cousin Inaaya informs me with obvious joy when she opens MY front door to let me into MY house.
