Famous Arctic explorer Evan Arthur Skagle is credited with the discovery of the island of Skaglemere and now a movie is being made about him. The reader must find an Eskimo carving in a desperate attempt to prove that the reader's great-grandfather actually discovered the island first.
Raymond A. Montgomery (born 1936 in Connecticut) was an author and progenitor of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure interactive children's book series, which ran from 1979 to 2003. Montgomery graduated from Williams College and went to graduate school at Yale University and New York University (NYU). He devoted his life to teaching and education.
In 2004, he co-founded the Chooseco publishing company alongside his wife, fellow author/publisher Shannon Gilligan, with the goal of reviving the CYOA series with new novels and reissued editions of the classics.
He continued to write and publish until his death in 2014.
This one was just meh, to me. The premise was great, but instead of making choices, I got bounced back and forth between the pages. The artwork was decent though. Not as good, in my humble opinion, as earlier books, but better than when Chooseco got a hold of the series.
I found the entire scope of this book fascinating. Perfection of pacing and subtlety of suspense are continuous allies of this remarkable R. A. Montgomery entry. Track of the Bear is a story packed with exciting adventure, original and intriguing history, surprising spots of humor where one least expects it, and a rock-solid underlying plot that never betrays itself. The narrative requires genuine thought in order to follow one's choices through to a truly good end, and it is sure to be an entertaining read no matter how many times one goes through it. Track of the Bear is some of the finest work to come from the pen of R. A. Montgomery. It is a work of significant imaginative power, and I am glad to own a copy.
